Should I buy a PS4 in Japan?

I have never really owned a console, but I am tempted with buying a used PlayStation 4, as I am in Japan until Xmas and they cost roughly 34.000yen used.
Considering the weakness of the Japanese yen, of which I have plenty, would this be considered a bargain?

I don't know what to do dooooo…

  • Some of us managed to get Australian version for $400 brand new so I dont think it's worth the hassle, unless the used one you're after has some extra accessories. Why dont you wait for ebay 20% off deal tomorrow and make the decision.

    • Thanks for your reply. I am tempted because I earned quite a bit of yen and the exchange rates are awful for me at the moment. Some do have the PlayStation Eye Cam for the same price, so its a tough call.
What would I be missing out on with the Japanese version?
      Basically, they're $330…

Other than X and O swap in menu screen of the system its just bluray region I think. I'm not even 100% on the bluray region tbh but otherwise identical.

        • I wasn't aware the PlayStation 4 was bluray locked. Thanks for pointing that out!

you will need to use with power adapter for Australian power points, I think the 240v puts extra strain on it.

    • Did that mean I have to buy an Australian power brick too?

      • No, no need. You just need either a figure 8 cable (like you get with the PS3 or Vita) or a plug adaptor.

  • Mine is from Japan. I just use a PC power cable I had laying around. No probs.

I've said this in another thread here but keep in mind the room it takes up in a suit case or carry on, I had to ditch the box when I was packing. I say if you can fit it in no probs then go for it.

  • Make sure you setup your PSN account to be Australian and only buy Australian games if your planning on using DLC etc. It can get complicated with some regions dlc not working with others etc.

    • Thanks for the tip. I heard that may cause problems.

      • You don't need to do that. Just be sure thatt if you buy an American game, buy American DLC. It's not rocket science.

        • You need to use a US account to get the US DLC then. That is not common knowledge and isn't clear when purchasing off their online store or on the game itself.

I'm with Riavan on this, it is something that needs to be said because it is not clear.

I have game and go to buy DLC for said game, I do expect it to work which isn't always the case.

@heywes: Okay, setting up a US account and taking note which region I bought a game from must be trickier than I remembered.

        • @Where's_That_Cake:

I sense sarcasm. Just saying, its worth noting as its not common knowledge. I've never set up a different region account on the PSN. I assume its like the Wii U, just change the home region of the console and poof! Done!

But not everyone knows region locking DLC is a thing.

        • @heywes: No need to change the home region, just make a new account and tell it you live in X country. You do need to buy PSN credit from that country, US is easy, just buy it from Amazon at face value. Code gets emailed to you. Amazon also sell digital games and season passes as well.
It honestly is extremely easy and is much cheaper in many cases than AU. You can then play any of those digital games, DLC etc on any other PSN account on that console.

        • @Where's_That_Cake:

Sounds better then when I last used my ps3. Cheers for the info.

  • X and O swap is worth it. Western regions have X as accept is rediculous, and shouldn't have been the standard to begin with.

Also, although lots of people don't know, the Japanese Karaoke app Joysound is region locked and only accessible with a Japanese playstation. Great value, you pay 300yen for 24hrs access to 30,000+ songs, excellent selection of Western songs that pretty much everyone will find something.

    • Haha, I guess I can always brag about that if I decide to sell it on Gumtree later. I'd be looking at playing No Man's Sky and GTA5. I also have an awesome PC, but I just don't know if I can wait any longer for NMS…

    • Do you mean a Japanese PlayStation or a Japanese psn account?

      • I think he means the system itself.

        • Yes the system. Some apps are region locked, US has them and Japan has them, but a lot of good novelty services are Japan systems only.

  • Thanks for your help everyone. I might bite on this one.
I have another question regarding PlayStation plus. Are the monthly free games the same for the US and Australia? Aides from the cheaper subscription, is our worth it for me to create a master US account instead of buying the Australia PlayStation plus subscription?

    • Yes they are the same nowadays albeit the odd change in the some PS3 titles now and again. Yes, as long as you are happy to buy your PSN sub's from Amazon (which is easy as) then go that way. I have sub's to both AU and US (US purely for the added sales discounts for Plus members) but if I hadn't had this AU account for 6 years or so I'd have ditched it and gone all US tbh.
