Officeworks Price match Dispute

Today I went to Office Works North Sydney and wanted to buy a Toshiba 32gb micro sdhc class10 card (for my new G1W-C dash cam). So i whip out my smart phone and search static ice. The RRP at Officeworks is $36 and the cheapest ones are II Buy, Itech, Mega Buy at around $20. So I take it to the counter and get a price match.

The guy takes 10 minutes to browse on his tablet to the II Buy site… so I educate him on just using static ice to directly link him to those other sites … I tech, II buy etc…
http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=32gb+micro+…

The guy then takes another 10 minutes and comes back claiming the Office works stock is a different serial code (notice the W in front of the A)..
Officeworks: SD-C032GR7AR30
All the other sites: SD-C032GR7WAR30

He goes all the other sites are return to manufacturer… office works will exchange for you on the spot… go buy from Itech if you want though. So I admit technical win for him. But is this in the spirit of the price match though? Essentially its the same product…just released in different markets. I felt like calling the manager and making a bigger scene. But 20 minutes had already been spent and I couldn't be bothered.

1) Do you think I have a legitimate complaint?
2) Has this ever happened to you - what would you do in the same situation?
3) Is this card any good for G1W-C anyway lol?

you think anyone should help you with a username like that???

    2) get over it. Wait for a deal on OzB.

Price match states the exact same product, you lost, move on.

  • 1) No. Different SKU, different product.
    2) Nope. I'd not waste 20 mins + travel time for $16.
    3) If it matches the specifications in the camera user manual, yes.

Yeah, there have been a few complaints over getting a price match out of Officeworks and their overly strict application of some of the more obscure and precise rules.
The short answer is that sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
Just go to the other sellers.

    • Not really obscure or precise. Different product number, different product.

Well, of course this is entirely incorrect.
There are numerous examples of exactly the same product but different serial numbers. This is often a result of suppliers giving a specific SKU to certain stores - and the more cynical amongst us would say this is a deliberate ploy by some of the retailers to circumvent their own price matching policy.

    1) No. Your user name suggests a troll alert.

    2) No. example Would go to MSY rather than price match at Officeworks. (Go to MSY even if it was a bit more expensive).

    3) Ask that question from where you purchased the cam from.

But is this in the spirit of the price match though?

In Officeworks case, the spirit would be to steal the sale from the smaller retailer whilst being able to sell at higher prices in the majority of cases. In this case there is a conflict from OW in price matching and the OW store in meeting its corporate targets. Hence you got the run around.

    • office works at north ryde would not beat the MSY price as they said that MSY products are grey imports

      • Just go to MSY.

OW Price match policy doesn't mention anything about grey imports.
Unless OW can some how view MSY's invoices, they are just speculating. (It could be local stock fallen off the back of a truck - speculation is easy)
If I was the size of OW I would be grey importing myself. They are big enough to deal direct with the manufacturer. (Remember the ad with semi trailers just filled with USB drives.)

As I said, just support MSY who are offering a low price upfront.

Good thing you didn't, cause you would've look like an idiot.
