Titanfall $5 USD - Origin on PC

1180

Time for my annual OzB post!

Spotted on reddit, and confirmed via Buckscoop that it can be purchased via the Hola browser extension and Paypal (just grabbed myself a copy…was $5.86 AUD using 28 Degrees).

It's still avaiable for a 48 trial via Origins Game Time, although it is covered by Origins Great Game Guarantee if you do buy it and it turns out munted :)

    See you next year :)

  • Finally, a price I'm willing to pay! Thanks for posting, op.

  • +1

I keep getting an error when after attempting to purchase.. Tried it with both credit card and PayPal using an American address. Do I need to create a US Origin account?

    • I'm also getting that error! Origin says It can't verify my card. I'm in Australia, using Hola to get the US price and using my commonwealth bank debit card. Anyone have any clue what's happening?

      • Just use PayPal and change the address to your Australian address. I just bought mine using that, but still through the Hola VPN app. Great value, thanks OP!

    • +1

I had a lot of trouble buying from Origin Mexico yesterday. Turn on hola VPN for origin, get to the last screen with your PayPal account name and the tick box underneath then turn off hola and tick box ad hit checkout and it will take you to PayPal instead of erroring out. Once on PayPal site login to your account and then before you hit confirm payment turn on hola again. Payment goes through no problem.

  • +1

Should add VPN required to title.

    • +1

Yep, you can use Hola Unblocker for Chrome. Surprisingly it's the US price (not the Mexican which is usually cheaper) that is the deal here. EDIT - Hmm, I can put it in cart but I'm getting errorCode=10048. Think their servers might be overloaded, I'll try later.

  • What a great price for an EA game. Tell me if I'm wrong but, I thought the Australian servers were pretty much dead…

    • Why do you think they've been price-cutting their 'magnum opus' through the floor?

    • +3

They added playercount on a worldwide and per-sever basis in an update recently. Last time I checked (a week ago?) there were ~60 people playing Attrition on a weekday afternoon, and every other playlist was dead.

You can almost always get an Attrition game in Australia, and on that basis alone it's worth ~$6. Just don't expect to be able to finish the campaign unless you wait a lot in a US lobby for players.

      • +1

I really wanted to play CTF on this game but never got the chance to because the playerbase is so small you can't find an AU game.

        • FWIW, I change to the US West server if I want to play anything other than Attrition and never have issues finding a game and despite the 200ms ping it certainly doesn't feel like I am at a disadvantage.

        • @Jonesy77: I'm too competitively minded when it comes to this stuff I couldn't stand being at such a disadvantage.

        • @chipstss: Believe me, when it comes to MP gaming I am as competitive as they come and my constant replacement of controllers (last gen) is testament to that but playing on the US server never gave me that feeling of being behind or worse off.

As soon as we start talking about playing against Yank's though we automatically expect the worst but this hasn't been the case. The seem-less movement, the verticality and the higher TTK all factor in to making this game so enjoyable.

        • +1

          @Jonesy77: seamless

        • @Jonesy77: I'm glad you've enjoyed the game and rarely experience bad lag - when my buddy and I bought and played Titanfall in May the lag (Aus region) was sometimes shockingly obvious. Killcams showing different stuff to what you actually experienced in the dying seconds of your last life just seemed to kinda rub it in. At the time, I put it down to the fact that the much-publicised Microsoft Azure servers weren't available in Australia yet. As Aussies playing on PC and not Americans playing on Xbox we felt like third-class citizens. I don't know if the situation's changed since then - we lost interest and moved on pretty quickly. EDIT According to Passa below, seems like they fixed that, so hopefully no longer an issue. END EDIT

Sitting in the lobby waiting ages for a match was no fun either. I'm sure the complicated matching system (also much-publicised) worked great when a million people were playing simultaneously, but in May that clearly wasn't the case on PC (again, for Aus region). We were coming from Battlefield (PC) where you can see a server list with player counts, and just pick one and go… getting a game of Titanfall going was a sub-par experience.

And why does everyone only play Attrition?! Seriously, it really seemed like the least interesting game type for the mechanics they built.

Sorry for the rant - it felt like the game was solid, but everything outside of the actually-playing bit was poor. I wanted to like it, and didn't hate it, but it's one of few that I actually regret paying as much as I did for it (around $48). At ~$6 tho - sure, why not. It's pretty fun just calling your robot buddy down out of the sky and stomping around for a bit. Your comment's almost convinced me to take another quick look :)

  • +9

Wow - fast tracked to the bargain bin!

    • +7

I cant believe how big a flop this game was after all the hype, as bad as home front…

      • +10

Homefront was a shit game (source: bought into the hype) - though it had decent multiplayer that died super quickly with a low player base.

Titanfall suffers from the same low player base, but the game itself I actually thought was really great. I enjoyed it for the months after its release when you could easily find games. A lot of the on foot shooting was the same sort of bullet sponge brainless stuff CoD is both good for and mocked for (depending on what you're into), but the wall running/parkour movement is really great and makes you feel so mobile. Titan combat is excellent too and surprisingly tactical.

The game modes are fun, though unfortunately the remaining player base only plays Attrition. My favourite was Last Titan Standing, where the first team to destroy all the other team's Titans won. Really intense stuff. It does matchmaking on PC, but has dedicated Azure servers located in Australia, so I always had a rock solid 5ms ping.

Bad marketing, quirky design decisions, and weird exclusivity (XB1, 360, PC - too many platforms to 'feel exclusive', too few to gain critical mass) killed them on the first outing, but I suspect a sequel will do very well. The current game is definitely worth ~$6.

        • regarding your comment on - "too many platforms to feel exclusive", it was "exclusive" to Microsoft ecosystem

        • +4

My favourite was Last Titan Standing

Best mode since it doesn't have scrubs standing around corners cloaked with the smart pistol.

        • @krisspy: in most games, I don't really care if people camp since, you know, you do what you gotta do to win.

But in Titanfall it doesn't make any sense - you won't top in Attrition sitting in the corner with a smart pistol.

        • +1

I agree with most stuff Passa has said here - seems I unfortunately picked up the game at almost exactly the wrong time (in May - still a little pricey at $48, hardly any players, only ppl playing Attrition, I believe no Azure servers at that time - lag was definitely noticeable). If they iron out the wrinkles, I believe a sequel could be great.

Given it'll always be an uphill battle to draw player numbers away from CoD and Battlefield, I will still absolutely think twice before buying a Titanfall sequel on PC if they don't put in server lists with player counts. The matchmaking experience for me was just no fun when the playerbase was low.

Though I fully admit Battlefield has/had its own issues, I could either sit and wait an unknown amount of time to play the least-interesting game mode in Titanfall, or pick a Battlefield server (with a known number of players) from a list and start playing immediately. No contest.

Still happy to see a second attempt, this game at least tried to be a bit different and has a lot going for it.

      • +1

I'm also really surprised. If I was to put money on this just prior to release, I would have pretty confidently bet this game would have taken off as the next Halo or COD franchise. The multiplayer gameplay looked so well designed to tap into what made all these blockbusters successful in the past.

        • +1

Nah any developer who claim their game is amazing because of you can drive large robots and do wall running, obviously has got poor content.

The really cheap in-robot views that look exactly the same as being on foot. The robots just happen to hold guns just like a human. Makes it easier to program i guess.

  • Destruction of IP: complete :)

  • +5

Admittedly cheap but I don't think I can be assed with Origin.

    • +9

I'm pretty much a Steam purist (nearly ~400 games on Steam), but Origin has come a long way and is a fairly unobtrusive way to play games. It's good to have competition in the background for Steam. Where I think EA go wrong is making their titles Origin exclusive rather than say cheaper on Origin.

      • +5

it's easier to count EA's right decisions than wrong ones though.

Everything touched by them has an extremely high chance of turning into turd.

        • +2

Eh, of the big three, I'd rate them the best. Ubisoft and Activision have way more contempt for the consumer.

        • @Passa:
          the holy trinity! haha.

and you would've thought microsoft would make it to #1 with their track record with windows…

        • @Passa: its hard to pick one but I have to place Activision bottom, then EA and then Ubi on top. I can't think of one EA experience in recent times that they haven't marred for me with crap servers, microtransactions and other rubbish. I pop Ubi on top for FarCry 3.

        • +1

@Where's_That_Cake: they're all guilty of the micro transaction rubbish - AC Unity has in game currency like a free to play mobile game. Ridiculous.

As a PC gamer, I rate Origin above Uplay any day of the week.

But yeah I mean the question is who is the most polished turd.

  • Thank you! Been waiting to try this game out. For this price it's worth it

Got it working. Logged in to Origin on Aus servers. Switched Hola to US site. Added game to cart. Followed procedure till I got to the pay now button. Switched Hola back to Aus. Paid by Paypal and cost $4.99USD.

    • wow i didnt even to that… all i did was switch hola to US then went to origin bought the game using my paypal and it showed up in my oz origin account :)

      • I initially Attempted to buy using my Paypal on the US store but got error 10048 or whatever which is a payment problem issue. Switched to Aus and voila.

      • It's a good idea to turn off any proxy (esp. free ones) before logging into anything.

      • @scudd70 - you just put your paypal password through someones proxy - not a smart thing to do.

        • depends what the proxy can do with secure channel connections .. :) i've also changed my password after the session

        • It's okay the PayPal connection will be made over SSL so unless you are presented with an invalid certificate and then blindly accept it then you will be fine.

        • @Agret: actually the whole origin site is secure via 256bit SSL .. :) so wasnt too worried but im in the habit of changing password when i do purchase through a proxy … u never know when a russian gets access to a datacenter worth of computing power to crack my paypal session to get the details.. hehehe

    • This method worked :D Thanks!

    • Thankyou, switching back to Aus seemed to be the fix for me. Upvoted to let others know if they have errors in purchasing.

    • This worked for me too, was getting errors any other way. Thanks mikhotep

    • @mikhotep you sir, are a legend! thank you for solving the 10048 mystery.

  • +1

aaah yes! black flag for wii u to gather actual dust … and now titanfall will sit n gather virtual dust.. wooohooo :)

  • +3

    The Titan truly fell.

  • +2

Its not a bargain if you dont want it.

  • +1

That burn inside an ozbargainer's heart when he purchased this for $50 in the Mexican Origin store at release. A lesson was learnt that day, never ever preorder. Cries

  • Can this be gifted?

  • +1

it's a shame this game didnt live up to the hype, it was without a doubt very amazing when it was originally released but since it relied purely on multiplay it got too repetitive in the end unfortunately…

  • OK. $5. I'm in.

  • AUD6.07 as of today via PayPal currency conversion. I'm glad I didn't grab it when it was about $15. I heard it is very quiet on Multiplayer mode. Now for $6 I think this game is worth it just to play single player campaign.

    • +7

Titanfall has no signle player campaign .. its only multiplayer :)

      • +1

Got it for xbox and though the graphics are cool, the game itself is not that great. Surprised to see no offline stuff. Takes sometimes minutes to update HD conents 2-3 times a week.
Fight is a total mess with players, robots and titans.
Still like the Battlefield and COD over this. No surprise the price has gone down.

      • Crap….

    • "Single player" just consists of different multiplayer modes on all the maps :)

  • +3

This has been my GOTY and most definitely the FPS of 2014. Respawn has done an awesome job with adding content since release and for a new IP I think it's a great foundation they've set.

Each to their own of course but this game was worth the RRP I paid for it so $5 is an absolute bargain.

  • Huh?? its $14.99 not USD $5???

    • +1

      via the Hola browser extension

  • +1

Good price but will pass… With DA:I I don't think I have time for any other game until next year…

  • +1

    cant be bothered.

too many reports of no players/servers, if thats the case whats the point?

and the download will be huge

  • There's only about 1000 players left WORLD WIDE last time i logged on last week. Aussie games are far and few in between and you will be playing with the same players over and over. It was an insanely good game, but sadly there is not much of a community left.

  • What happened to the community in this one? I play CSGO.. contemplating whether to grab this.

  • +1

Surely it'll be bigger again now that so many ozbargainers are picking it up for $5? You don't need many to have a game.

    • Yeah thought the same so decided to buy it. $6.07 AUD

    • haha. True. Many times there are no games to join. I have to go to South Asia servers, but have a big lag.
Will be good to see more players. Are the servers same for PC and XBox?
Never have a problem with years old COD MW3.

      • XB1 servers still have players so I hear.

      • Comeon Ozbargainers. Buy the game and increase the playerbase!

  • Pretty sad when one of the most hyped games of the year is already $5 only 6-7 months after release.

    • +2

That's why people shouldn't pre-order. Especially if you are an Ozbargainer.

    • there a heap of DLC .. get em in cheap and then make em pay?

      • +1

That's what EA did with Mass Effect. The trilogy can be purchased for $10 sometimes, but the DLC for ME2 + ME3 is $100 total, and rarely (if ever) gets discounted.

        • Since you have to buy it through a weird Bioware site using "Bioware Points" which are never on sale then yeah the DLC is wayyyy expensive. The discounts they give aren't even substantial, it's a complete joke how overpriced it is.

  • +1

So, if there's no one online, you can't play?

    • There are people online. Read the comments above.

      • I did, as Gaggy said, "Many times there are no games to join. I have to go to South Asia servers, but have a big lag."

Plus, my question was IF there was no one online …

  • Just realised how big the install file actually is. It's ridiculous hahaha.

  • Can I pay using a Visa Gift Card?

  • Is there no single player story mode etc?

From the comments it sounds like you need to play online with other players.

    • Yeah the campaign is played online, no SP offline.

  • -1

I think they have fixed this workaround. I can't seem to get it to work anymore :(

Tried switching back and forth with Hola. No go :(

    • worked fine for me just now. logged in to origin via au site, used hola mozilla plugin to set to US, opened origin.com in new tab and was able to checkout and pay using paypal without any problems.

  • do you have to pay for time as well as the game?

    • No, this is for the PC version so there is no cost for online play.

The new co-op mode is also included in the base game.

I think this deal is long over though.

  • Through hola i'm not seeing that price anymore… Looks like the deal is over :-(
