FREE Powerline Ethernet Adapters for Foxtel iQ Customers

1110

Successfully ordered 2 pairs of these earlier today for my 2 Foxtel boxes. Operator kindly told me they're mine to keep, even if I decide to cancel my subscription. Took all of 2 minutes on the phone.

Will be using these as ethernet extensions for my desktop PCs I reckon. If you're not keen on wifi, these work perfectly well with Xbox, PS, or anything else that needs an ethernet or 'secure' wired connection.

Offer ends December 12th. Good luck :)

  • Not sure if it's free for "all" subscribers, as the ad seems to target iQ box users. Can anyone confirm whether you are eligible for the free adapter even if your subscription doesn't include an iQ box?

    • +1

You may be correct. Title changed to include iQ. Shouldn't assume everyone has an iQ box :(

    • +1

call centre opening hours 9am-9pm AEDT

  • +2

Looks like a netcomm do you know how fast?

    • +10

Get first, ask questions later I say :)

  • +1

What throughput? Are they 200M or 500M?

    • +6

      they are FREE00M

  • +1

Nice! Free postage as well I guess?
They're Foxtel branded but I wonder what brand they actually are.

  • +2

I received this e-mail and took advantage of the offer.

Based on the following information that was in the e-mail, I believe that another part of the criteria is that you need to be subscribed to a package that contains the BoxSets chaanel.

"To enjoy BoxSets on Foxtel Anytime, your iQ box needs to be connected to the internet. If your modem isn’t near your TV, a Powerline Adapter, or PLA, will make connecting to the internet easy. And right now, we’re offering you a free PLA, valued at $50 #, so you can make the most of BoxSets."

  • I've already asked for Free Powerline adapters in the past a while ago which they promptly provided. I wonder if they will give me more. Where was the ad posted?

    • Where was the ad posted?

I received it in today's mail. Took a photo of it and posted it.

  • If they are Netcomm NP505s then that is a sweet deal; as those retail for $100 or more.

I've had the older NP504s for more than a year now and they are rock solid.

  • I did the exact same as you when I got my foxtel this year :) Connected it up to my PS4.

  • Do they keep records on those whose already have/received one? I got mine when it was installed in July but wouldn't mind another for my pc. hehehe

    • I would be interested to know this as well.

      • We got free ones when we upgraded to IQ, I just got more sent out now..
as well as a free month of multi-room then it reverts to $15 a month, Good for over xmas at least…

        • Cool, I already received them with both of my iQHD's, might give it a try though.

        • They are sending me out another one, doesn't look like they keep a record.

    • Just called, did it all under/close to 1 minute. No waiting time whatsoever. Got right to the point.

Me: Hi, I received an email saying that I am eligible for a powerline adaptor.
Operator: Yes, let me grab your account number

      blah,blah,blah

Operator: Ok! all good will take 2 to 7 days.
      Me: Ok thanks.

Easy done! Thanks OP and thanks to @bigkris74 for letting me know to disconnect my net from the IQ before doing so.

  • Wonder if I would be eligible? I get Foxtel through a Telstra package though…

    • Me also. If you call before I do, please advise the results :)

    • +1

rung Foxtel direct, they put me through Telstra as my package is through Telstra
Telstra said sorry not eligible PLA only offered thru Foz

  • Do these come as a set or just the one? (presuming set - but at $50 value seems like it might be only one…)

    • +1

      They come as a pair.

  • Thanks have foxtel with IQ2 :D

  • Can someone order one for me? ;p

  • I've already got some hooked up (NP504) connecting my PC. But I'd like to get one working with Foxtel too (so I can rewind upto 24hrs).

Is it possible to have two different sets of powerline adapters?

  • Wait … what? How is this a offer? I got provided powerline ethernet adapters with my iQ2/HD over 18 months ago and got told it was standard. So confusled right now :S

    • I upgraded from a standard IQ box to an IQHD box a couple of years ago and was given ethernet powerline adaptors for free as well.

  • -1

One year ago, ordered Foxtel and, when IQ box arrived, found ethernet socket on it - there was no information warning of this.

On discussing with Foxtel customer service what this was for and how to connect, I was offered a free "wireless device" as they called it to assist in connecting Foxtel IQ box to home network. Rep referred to it as "wireless device" several times; I assumed it was a wifi adaptor with an ethernet cable.

Separate courier delivery arrived (what a waste) containing an unmarked OEM-style cardboard box containing 2 x Netcomm (branded as such) NP204, 200MHz HomePlug AV standard.

    This was useless, since
    (a) we already had 500 MHz Homeplug AV ethernet-over-power, and
    (b) this was going to occupy yet another socket on the modem-router, which was already full house.

Had another discussion with another rep about this, and asked whether this was the "wireless device" Foxtel referred to. Was repeatedly assured that it is, definitely "wireless".

This was free but wasted. Foxtel customer service were hopeless, and there was no information available anywhere in advance nor on the web site about this.

For most people, it would be more useful to have a genuinely wireless device. Many TVs have wifi built-in, and you'd probably want ethernet to both the TV and the Foxtel IQ box.
Alternatively, you'd want wired ethernet but with two outlets, one for the TV and one for the IQ box.

In our case we have to power either two HomePlug AV devices near the TV/IQ box, or one HomePlug AV device with two outlets (but these were not available at the time) or one HomePlug AV device and a spare router or hub.
All of this adds cabling and plumbing and hot little devices consuming power and just waiting to catch fire one day.

In any case, the facility is almost useless unless you are prepared to pay Foxtel to rent movies or TV shows.
Foxtel say there is free content that can be downloaded via the IQ box once it is internet-connected, but the reality is that this content is very restricted to the odd old movie you've probably seen 10 times plus a few recent episodes only (not the full set) of some gutter rubbish TV shows you don't want to watch.

    • If they are going spare?

  • I have my PC in the study and laptop in the bedroom. Wifi isn't the strongest in the bedroom. Would I be able to use these to connect the laptop and get better internet signal in there through these adapters?

    • These replace your wifi connection with 'direct' ethernet from your router.

  • wow, so many people use Foxtel!

  • Just confirming that I recently took advantage of this offer and got 2 x NP505F adapters.

  • +1

Are they likely to be getting rid these in preparation for the roll out of the new Foxtel IQ3 box that has inbuilt wifi? Good deal nonetheless. In had Fox installed in a new premises a few months ago and they provided me with a new set of the twin Ethernet plug versions as I told them I "left" my older single plug ones at my previous premises ;)

  • If anyone is looking to offload an unwanted or surplus set of these i'd be happy to send a few dollars your way. Been interested to try out this technology at my apartment but not keen to commit at full price.

  • Your electricity outlets have to be on the same phase for these to work, don't they?

    • +4

Your electricity outlets have to be on the same phase for these to work

The only requirement is that the 2 adapters must be on the same electrical circuit.

      This should help explain.

      • +1

Not true. They just need to be on the same phase. EOP utilises the neutral line which are all connected at the switchboard so it doesn't matter if it's 2 different circuits. What will matter is the length of cable.

  • so, do you need wifi for this device to work??

    • +1

so, do you need wifi for this device to work?

Wifi has nothing to do with these adapters. In fact, not having access to wifi (or poor signal, security, etc) is why you would choose this option.

  • Just got off the phone and informed that its only available with the IQHD… and that i have to upgrade to IQHD thats $100 upgrade fee..

  • +1

Got rejected with iQ2 SD box being told it was not compatible as it is not internet enabled and I don't have access to BoxSets on my account anyway and that I needed to have the iQHD.

I got the feeling they have had a few calls this morning.

After asking to be put through to Disconnections they have now upgraded me iQHD and let me drop my plan back to the essentials without having to lock in for 12mths, no charge for upgrading.
Oh and the PLA's come with it.

I was so close to finally cutting the ties, at least I'm getting closer.

Anyone got he the fine print included with the offer? I was told to read that for eligibility.

  • Thank You. Ordered with no hassles, apart from 15 minute wait on hold. They said they will post and should only be 3-5 days for delivery. Cant wait !

  • I got them, and already had them…

I also got a free month of multi room,

She tried to sell every thing! Be prepared for a 15 minute wait, and 15 minute phone call…

  • Thanks TA got one.
However had to sign up for extra addon BoxSets channels $10 per month no contract.
Was told not eligible without addon.

  • Just got denied - Apparently if you have Foxtel provided through Telstra they aren't free…that's cool, I don't actually need them but Free is Free Right! (Full Disclosure: Owner of the Business I work for has 2x Foxtel IQ HD boxes, bundled with the Office Telephone System/Plan).

    • I'm through Telstra and I didn't have a problem getting it. I'm not part of any Telstra package though, just have the bills come via Telstra.

      • Maybe its because its a business plan, but will try later in the day after the call centre fatigue/give them what they want so I can go home mentality kicks in?

  • Thanks OP for info.. ordered one after 15 mins of waiting….. and got confirmation that new set top box will be releasing soon early next year, and everyone has to pay a Fixed fee to have it

    • really? The IQ3 was suppose to come out around March this year if my memory serves me correctly, I would be highly surprised if they made it a mandatory upgrade?

I know in country's like Canada they are pushing cable boxes onto customers that can record upto 8 shows at one time! But this is not mandatory.

If anyone knows more about this I would appreciate it, because I recently invested in specific IR extenders, I need to purchase more but if the move to IQ3 is mandatory (it is meant to use Bluetooth for the remote control) then these IR extenders will be pointless.

      • No, I think what he meant was that if you want to upgrade to the IQ3 box then you will have to pay a fixed upgrade fee to get it.

It is similar to how IQ and IQ HD boxes were released. Of course over time, Foxtel then starts to discount these boxes.

        • That's right one has to pay to upgrade to new iQ3, its Not mandatory, just an extra option.

  • Got one after less than 5m. Thanks OP.

  • Simple. Done.

  • Ordered done. Thanks
I asked the rep and he said the Powerline adapters are still property of foxtel if I were to disconnect.

  • Awesome just ordered a second one for our 2nd IQ box.

The first one they gave us were the Netcomm NP505 500mbps adapters. I asked for the same one, but she said we couldn't choose which ones we get. She said they should be the same though.

    Sweet!

  • Sweet. Took all of 3 minutes on the phone, no waiting. Have boxsets but dont have iq HD

  • Ordered mine, thanks. They only allowed one per house, even though I have 3 boxes.

    • I got 2 sets… no questions.

      • The guy i got wasn't too keen on sharing :P but thanks TA! another great bargain!

  • Yep, got 2 of these for myself.

Have Boxsets as "free additional content", and Foxtel IQ (not HD)

  • This is not for all foxtel customers..its targetted offer via email/letter.

    Cheers

    • who voted this down? i had the same reply when ringing them - targeted letter / email.
      doesn't matter; just saying.

  • +2

    Just rang and ordered.

Note for others, they questioned why I already had my IQ2 connected to the net and I said "I am changing rooms and I do not have cable ethernet in the new room."

    Worked fine, on their way.

    :D

    • +1

"my Foxtel is currently connected to a WiFi thing which keeps dropping out… I was told your thing works better" worked for me (and is trueish) but I then got a four minute rundown for the technically illiterate on how exactly to install it as a result.

  • They will only send one if you have an IQ1.5 or later. Whatever that means!

  • Awesome — just what I needed! Thanks, OP!

  • Thanks, I have a pair being sent my way!

  • Just ordered mine, easy as. Cheers.

  • Thanks OP.

  • Awesome, thanks. Boxsets channel looks interesting too.

  • Thanks Op. I'm a Telstra Foxtel customer (but don't have any kind of bundle) and had no problems ordering. They did say would send a confirmation email but have not received anything as yet.

  • Thanks. Done on phone in 2.5 mins cheers.

  • What's the process? Give Account number and name, D.O.B and password?

  • +1

Do these come with software? Just beware of some security issues around these devices..

All current 200M and 500M adapters use Homeplug AV uses 128 bit AES encryption , they do how ever come with a default private network name and it is suggested this be changed with the utility from the manufacturer web site as a further security measure.

I have heard of hackers 'testing' these to gain access to your home network. Food for thought.

    • +1

How do hackers 'test' these without plugging one into a powerpoint on an existing network? These only work within the confines of a closed system, in this case, your home. You can't just plug one in next door and expect to connect to my network, as my home is electrically 'isolated' from my neighbour.

By the way, received mine today - all 4 are Netcomm NP505.

      • Not sure, don't know a whole lot about these sorry. Just a fellow tech head mentioned it. Could be a case of scaremongering or the over cautious. It is always good to do your research though.

      • Depends I researched this before I took the plunge. It seems to be more prevalent in unit/apartment complexes as they all run on the same circuit IIRC.

        • They don't run on the "same circuit any" more or less than houses do. They are however closer together. They still have separate circuit breakers, meters etc which I would call separate circuits.

      • +1

Your power is isolated from your neighbours only by a few breakers and a switchboard or two in an apartment or the wiring to the street in houses. Not hard for HomePlug to make it that far. Maybe it won't have the highest bit rate, but enough to hack definitely.

Your home is NOT electrically isolated from your neighbour unless you disconnect i.e. turn the power off.

In a residential street with single phase power to your house typically every third house will be on the same phase. So it's not your neighbour but three doors down that has the best chance. That distance does help attenuate things further so may not always work.

So the network you create will have some limited reach to your neighbours. That's all they need.

  • Thanks TA :-)

  • +1

    Received mine today - Netcomm NP505F 500Mbps :)

  • Anyone have unneeded spares?

  • Replaced my wireless AP with these adapters

However ping to my gateway router has increased to 3ms compared to wireless access point 1ms.

Never mind they came free ;)

  • Apparently I need to "supply a reference number for the email or letter that I received with this offer" did anyone else have this issue?

    • +1

I called back and got a different person who gave them to me with no issues.

  • I'm having trouble getting a connection. Does this work plugged into an extension cord/multi-powerboard? Or does it have to be a direct wall outlet?
