Prescription Lenses for Glasses

Does anyone know the cheapest place (Melbourne or online) to have prescription lenses made for a pair of frames I already have? Looking got Single vision with the ultra clear coating..
And if possible claimable through private health?

I believe opsm is $300+ and specsavers is $150 (correct me if I'm wrong) and this does not include the ultra clear coating..

  • Single vision in opsm is $120. Coating is additional, not sure how much that is but it's less than $100.

    • Thanks. In store at opsm I got told it's $290 less a 25% discount to private health members. This would be in addition to the frame I chose. Any idea where they got that number from?

      • Hi,

What they should have told you is this:

Entry single vision lenses are $120 for a pair.
        Anti reflective coating is $90.
As you are bringing your own frame there will be a $30 fitting fee.

That's a total of $240. Now if you have a healthfund you are eligible for 25% off this amount (I can't remember if you get the % off the fitting fee though) so you will either pay:

$187.50 (inc full $30 for fitting fee)
        OR
$180 (inc discount applied to fitting fee)

Obviously if you have health fund rebates they can be applied to this amount so you could possibly get this with no out of pocket expense (depending on your optical benefits package)

I think the store mightve been trying to sell you more expensive polycarbonate lenses, if you were to visit again feel free to quote this message, the $120 lenses are the standard plastic lenses.

        Hope this helps!

  • eyebuydirect.com cheap and reliable source!

  • I highly recommend selectspecs.com - they're UK based but shipping is pretty swift.
Had a good expereince with them recently.
The service you want is called 'reglazing'

  • I have used these guys on several occasions and recommend them to anyone and everyone

I even had a set where I put in the wrong details, so the glasses were out of focus and they replaced them free of charge.(look at the return policy)

  • Hubby & I are going to Phuket shortly. Last time there he had 3 pairs made ( tinted, safety & distance ) I had 2 - distance sunnies & ordinary reading. This was 2 years ago & they are still great. Total cost for all5 pairs was less than $200.00. We also have private health insurance where we can receive 1 pair a year each but as we need multiple glasses for each reason it would cost a fortune here. So on this holiday we will stock up again ( as obviously your vision changes as time passes). Just goes to show how much mark up is made. Don't know if they can be ordered on line but will find out when we get there. For some reason Phuket has almost more Optometrists than they do clothes shops or restaurants - must be a reason for it.
