370

Atari: Game Over is the Xbox Originals documentary that chronicles the fall of the Atari Corporation through the lens of one of the biggest mysteries of all time, dubbed “The Great Video Game Burial of 1983.” As the story goes, the Atari Corporation, faced with an overwhelmingly negative response to “E.T.,” the video game for the Atari 2600, disposed of hundreds of thousands of unsold game cartridges by burying them in the small town of Alamogordo, New Mexico.

  • Can be watched online, no need to get out the dusty Xbox so I guess I can give it a try.

    • Can be watched via Windows Phone or Windows 8 from memory

      • EDIT: Nah, Silverlight doesn't seem to work.

glad they're distributing it for free, it sucks that they sold off the cartridges for $500+ each.

    • I knew as soon as I saw the political figures they were going to monetize the whole deal. Do you know if they put any in a museum like they said they would?

    AMiGA Rocks 4 ever!! :)

  • Worked on x64 PC using Chrome. had to install SilverLight tho

  • God I hate it how this old shibboleth keeps on getting trotted out. ET wasnt the worst game on the Atari 2600, not even close. Anyone who thinks so obviously never played Atari.

    • There's actually a pretty sweet romhack that fixes much of the game too.

      • Thats pretty damn awesome, credit to the people who actually bothered with all that. Amazing how hard they had to make it all fit into 4kb of rom.

Won't play for me. I've tried several times. Using chrome and have silverlight installed.

Can play the trailer but not the movie.

    • After much googling I've found that XBox Video isn't supported on Windows 7.

  • I watched it today on my Xbox. Great short doco! Thanks for the post.
