How to travel in Sydney for less than $20 a week with an Opal card?

My mates and I made this video to show people how to travel with Opal Card in Sydney for less than $20 a week.

It takes a bit of time, but it works, potentially saving you $20 or more a week.

Is it possible to duplicate an opal card using an nfc compatible phone?

    • +2

I use my opal as a trigger for other actions with great success, but tried it using Beep'n'Go app, but had no luck.
Also looked like a d#ck trying to swipe my phone and then having to pretend I meant to use my opal haha

    • I looked into it, doesn't seem possible at the moment (or I'm not smart enough to do that).

  • Nice work! ;)

  • Would this work?

    Buy 2 opal cards.

Take a train line with stations with easily accessible opal card readers. Let's say these stations are A, B, C, D…

    A - Tap on with card 1
    B - Tap off with card 1
    B - Tap on with card 2
    C - Tap off with card 2
    C - Tap on with card 1
    D - Tap off with card 1
    D - Tap on with card 2

    Continue until some station

Take trip back in the other direction until opal cards are maxed at 8 journeys.

    Profit???
    Repeat???

      Would this work?

      Probably.

      Profit???

If your time is worth less than the money you save.

    • You end up paying for two cards, unlikely that's cheaper than your weekly cost. Better version is to team up with a colleague or mate and use his Opal card along with yours for this scheme

The problem with this scheme is waiting for the next train. The waits add up. I've seen some people dash off the train, tap off at the pole on the platform itself and dash back on the same train

    • You don't need to wait for any trains if the card reader is accessible on the train platform.

The second opal card can be sold for a profit.

  • Out of the rain and in mostly air-conditioned carriages, >16 journey tap On.offs could be an elegant approach. Leaping out of train doors. But yeah, doubtful it would fetch $25 on the blackmarket as a 'mid-week'..3/7ths-opal. Sat-Sun won't count as are off-peak or capped for most. So effectively, handy for Wed-Fri.

  • I may have found a hack that uses the transfers feature to advantage.
As many know, one can return home free on xfers within 60 minutes…

But. What if you offset your itinerary by 1 stop ie: can jog to 1 station off your normal home. You are only charged for the distance between the start and end point, even though you may have travelled further as part of a journey. Could this prove unmetered each day*$2.31

Update for this is Light Rail, which is $2.10 per ride and stations are 290-500 meters apart

If I wasn't so lazy I'd do this at lunch on Monday

Was just looking into this myself. According to Opal:

If I get off at one light rail stop to buy something from a shop and then continue my journey, will I have to pay two fares?

With Opal if you resume travel on light rail within 60 minutes you benefit from the Opal Trip Advantage (also called the 60 minute transfer). This means you pay a single fare based on the distance you travel. If you were travelling with paper tickets you would pay two fares.

To benefit from the Opal Trip Advantage on light rail you must tap on again at the same stop or at the two closest stops in either direction.

Seems it might still be 3 stops or ~1km anyway…. unless you find stations that are located close together but are more than 2 stops apart.

  • Hi would this work if I used a bus from stop a to stop b over and over again?

    • Yes. But you will need to keep 60+ minute gap between 2 journeys

    • Yes, it does. I get my weekly travel for $18.37. Here's how:
Monday, walk to the station for an off peak trip into the city - 3.37
The five bus trips, each one at least 1 hr apart, 2.10 each, I'm up to 13.87 and 6 journeys.
Train home, charged at 1.13 as I've hit the daily travel limit (even though this is at peak time): $15 done.
Tuesday get the train off peak to work, 18.37 total

And those bus trips are 1 stop and walk back. About 5 minutes work.

There is one way to get you your weekly travel for $15: 8 bus trips, 1 hour apart on the same day: the first 7 get charged at 2.10, the last one at 30 cents as you've hit the daily cap.
