Cheapest place to buy luxury watch brands (Omega, Rolex, etc)

Hey OzB,

Just wondering if anyone might have any ideas what the cheapest way to buy genuine Omega watch would be (/other brands). In particular, I am looking at this watch: http://www.omegawatches.com/collection/speedmaster/moonwatch…

All I can think of so far is to buy here and claim GST back when going overseas, but thought there may be cheaper places overseas/online? (if there are reputable sites). Thought people may be able to share their experiences here as I couldn't find any similar topics

Thanks

There seems to be decent margins on luxury watches. I purchased a 3k longines watch 2 years go and managed to negotiate 1k off. I called about 15 different places and quoted what others were offering until nobody would budge.

Some places did not give a price over the phone, I had to go in-store. I also called one place and said if you could do this price, I will be there in the hour. It worked and I got the watch!

  • What exact speedmaster are you trying to buy? The speedmaster comes in plexi and sapphire, which come at different price points.

You can either buy grey market, from a reputable site like http://www.authenticwatches.com, and not have official warranty

Or you can go to an authorized dealer in australia, and negotiate around 15-30% off the RRP

It all depends on the current exchange rates, which aren't so good at the moment.

I got my omega speedmaster with sapphire front/caseback for $5000 flat at an AD in the sydney cbd

  • At the time my financial situation changed and I unfortunately could not afford to buy, however now I am in a position where I can. Does anyone have more recent experience buying these brands? I am looking at either a Breitling or Omega and am obviously looking to get best deal possible. 0.69USD certainly isn't helping. What type of discount have people managed to get off RRP @ AD in Sydney. Jomashop/Authenticwatches.com are certainly looking like a good option but comments I have read regarding their dealing with warranties (Jomashop mainly) have me questioning whether or not it is worth the initial savings.

I bought an omega and breitling from monards in gold coast, i got 25% off RRP on the breitling and 22.5% on the omega (though the omega RRP went up by $800 a week later so i might've gotten lucky).

Then an additional 10% GST refund

so a total of 32.5% on the breitling and 30.25% on the Omega

I was tempted to go down the grey import route, but local warranty is worth the additional cost + theres the chance it'll be hit with 5% duty & 10% tax at the boarder so…

      • Thank you. These percentages will really help when negotiating. Originally I was going to get them shipped to my hotel in USA to avoid sales tax then not declare them coming back, but I would much rather buy here and use the TRS. Did you have any trouble bringing them back to Australia?

i bought them for my parents, so i handed it them overseas when i met them and they brought it back :D so no problems encounted

          • @paraneoplastic: Yeah that works. Had similar arrangements otherwise would've been pulled up by Customs 3 out of 3 now.

            • @mini2: As in they asked to see watch?

@kev98: At customs if you declare it on entry yes they will pull you up, if not you won't but if you get caught it's a $400 fine + the GST so….

              • @kev98: They specifically asked if I've brought the watches back in and am I wearing it.
