Keep that rice away from us Aussies… On TV recently there were people claiming that carbohydrates are evil and are making people fat & diabetic (rice is about 92% carbohydrates from memory). I cannot wait to see the expression of the faces of 'green-smoothie' drinking hypochondriacs when I tell them they have to replace the chlorophyll with butter, pork and egg yolks.

Of course, these boffins being interviewed seem to have neglected the fact that in regions where rice is a staple, there is very little obesity and Type 2 Diabetes.

Eating too much food makes people fat. It's as simple as that. It doesn't matter whether those calories come from fats, meats, alcohol or grains. Extra energy gets stored by the body as triglycerides in adipose tissue. It's simple High School Biology.

    • It's simple. Carbohydrates = energy and without them you're going to feel pretty much like death with low functionality, both physically and mentally.

The key is to consume healthy carbs from natural sources such as grains, nuts, legumes, beans, fruit, honey, stevia and to avoid processed carbs like white flour and white sugar found in all junk food.

You want those healthier slow release carbs which provide you with longer lasting energy as they produce a slow-burn and do not turn in to fat as quickly as processed carbs.

Either way, you're going to want to burn off the carbs you consume as they will store in the body and turn in to fat.

Things like soft drinks and white bread are the worst as they not only contain a high amount of processed carbs but offer the body zero nutritional value whatsoever and can cause health problems such as diabetes and of course, obesity.

If you want to be fit and healthy then eat healthy and train hard, give your mind and body the vitamins, minerals and nutrients it needs to function at an optimum healthy level, along with physical exertion each day to burn those carbs and get those good chemicals to the brain and that's basically it.

Very little Type II diabetes in areas where rice is a staple? I think you need to do a little more research on the prevalence of Type II diabetes in SE Asia.

    • Lol! Halved my blood glucose in 2 weeks (from a high of I'm gonna die shortly 20.8 to 10.1) by switching to a low carb diet. Got a ways to go. I think the problem is you are comparing simple high school biology to cutting edge science.

  • Recently bought this on rain check and my experience is pretty conclusive:

STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING SUNRICE RICE PRODUCTS!!!!!!!!!!

As rice is an important staple in my diet, can tell which rice has good taste and texture. It's not about acquired taste cause I have eaten almost all kind of rice: Basmati, Jasmine, brown, red, grains (medium, short and long), Japanese (different kinds), Korean (different kinds), Indonesian (different kinds) , Thai (different kinds), etc.

Though I personally know some Chinese that like short grain Sunrice. I would rather have Coles' and Woolsworth's jasmine home brands instead of Sunrice.

Yes, don't eat rice 3 times a day. That is so sad! I love sweet corn, potato, pizza, etc.

However, I can vouch that certain Asian dishes taste so good with rice, for example: Rendang, Thai green and red curry and Indonesian traditional fried chicken with the chili paste.

Most asian eat rice 3 times a day since godzilla times,, all good. Bring em on

Not sure if I understand your comment. What's wrong with this rice offer?

      • Let me make it clearer to you:

Stay away from Sunrice rice products because taste and texture are of low quality. Having said that, price is quite interesting but no deal. You can buy very cheap products but it's gonna be useless if you don't like/use it. Those products probably end up in a trash bin.

        • What brands are good then?

        • +2

I don't agree with you. I regularly buy Sunrice rice, I don't deny there are better brands but Sunrice is ok aswell, it is also oz grown.

          @CandyMan:
Some types are Australian, but others are imported. Check packet for country of origin.

        • @Steptoe:
          That's true

        • +1

@rochow: I like the koala brand from woolies.

        • @skywards:
Check the label. That's a Ricegrowers brand like Sunrice. I think it's Thai grown rice.

Different people have different taste. We could argue all day about best coffee, wine and rice. It also depends on how you cook your rice. Sunrice tastes ok but i prefer Jasmine variety. Long grain can be dry and grainy for me.

    • haven't tried Home brand jasmine but the home brand long grain taste like cardboard. I have been buying Sunrice Jasmine since all jasmine rice from Thailand gone up so much recent years. I tried Lion and Rose brand they are very good but cost over $40 for 25kg.

    This product sucks!

The Sunrice brand sell different kinds of jasmine rice. The image posted by OP here is the "Australian Jasmine" and the one on special next week at Woolies is the "Sunlong Jasmine" from Thailand. Jasmine rice have different varieties and these two have different characteristics. My family's preference is the Australian Jasmine because of its texture and fragrance.

    • Thanks for the clarification, now I know I'd get Jasmine rice from Coles.

      • Woolies sell Sunrice Australian Jasmine, too, but it's not on special at the moment.

I eat a lot of rice and it all tastes the same. Except for japanese rice and the long grain Indian rice. I bought this yesterday as I didn't want a 25kg bag of rice

  • I can confirm this rice tastes horrible, has a sand grain texture (not smooth), we bought 2 packs because it was cheap, big mistake. I'm now thinking about just throwing them away because they're not edible. Use it to feed the chooks maybe.

    • Most likely a lack of cooking skill on your part.

  • I too have had many bad experiences with Sunrice..

The last Sunruce basmati I bought was absolutely terrible. I made it exactly how I make every other brand (and If I do say so myself, am pretty good at it :p) , and it came out sticky and lacked any flavour / aroma at all! Pretty much ruined the curry I made. It was like cheap long grain rice in a basmati packet.

and it's not the first bad experience with their rice.. not to say it's always bad though.

Never had a a problem with W/worts Select, Coles, or Aldi Basmati (or Jasmine for that matter)

    • I regularly use Sunrice Basmati Rice as well as other brands and have never had issues with it coming out sticky etc unless I've used too much water.
