      An oldie but a goodie,

      http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/slrs/canon_eos600d

I have this camera. I do have an 18-200 mm Canon lens that I used in the past for travelling but the 18-55mm is good and sharp enough for general purpose use. There is something about seeing the pictures through the viewfinder of an SLR instead of a screen of a compact, things feels to happen much faster this way. I have combined this with a Nissen Di886 Professional flash to get amazing pictures when light is low. I also have a 50 mm 1.8 lens which I have used from time to time without flash, and the sensor in this model up is quite good without much noise high up in the ISO range.

Issues? I have had trouble with this camera and taking videos using several Sandisk ultra 64 GB cards. It seems to be a memory write buffer issue. And with 2 3-4 yr old girls who don't like to stay still, the focusing with the 9 point focus can sometimes be off if you tend to frame the subjects off centre. Compacts have the feature of face detection which helps in this regard. I however intend to upgrade to the 7D Mark II when the prices become a bit more reasonable compared to what they are now just after the release of this model.

The price of this package is quite good for what you get.

      Cheers.

Great price for a great camera. Highly recommended for beginners.

I managed to snag one of these up for $400 a while back without lens so $451 is a great price and the camera is pretty easy to use with a nice screen and takes great photos. The lens is an entry lens, but still pretty good.

I headed over to digicdirect and did

    700D body - 595
    50mm f1.8 - 121
    Genuine LpE8 - 69
Bump price up - 10 (to get cash back. they had no $10 item, oh well)
    Total - $795
    Less cash back - $300
    Less TRS - $72
    Final - $423

    Borrowing 18-55 from mate :)

How did you get 700D from digidirect for $595?
      Thanks

      • I wondered the same thing! The price on their website is much higher than $595. Did you haggle it down?

        • Price matched from JB

  • Didn't realise Canon still actively sell Canon 600D. Anyway, the main selling point of 600D over 1200D and Sony alpha 3500 is the articulated LCD Screen. Sony alpha 3500 might have a better sensor and more focus points, but only does 1080i video.

  • Digidirect - $385 after cashback, not sure about postage though
    http://www.digidirect.com.au/slr_cameras/canon/canon_eos_600…

    • Price is only body. $409 if combined with 18-55 mm IS lens. $15.90 shipping.

      Still good though.

  • I think people in the low end SLR market should seriously consider mirrorless cameras instead. Someone buying a cheap body isn't going to have much use for the wider variety and range of lenses you get for SLRs vs mirrorless. Nor do you get features like weatherproofing, multiple dials and dual screens for quickly changing settings, better autofocus etc., which are all reserved for more expensive bodies. You just get the bulk. Better off with a mirrorless for the price, those 18-200 / 18-55 / 55-250mm lenses aren't going to give you better quality than a mirrorless would, but you will have to lug around a much bigger camera. Quality lenses will cost more than what you're paying for the body, so that defeats the point of skimping on the body, at least get a 70D if that's the plan.

    • The problem about mirrorless is the price and variety of lenses.

However, i do agree that if you're getting serious about photography, 70D is a very nice body to pick.

      • JB HiFi has the 6D for $1699 and if you spend the $200 (as per oonditions) you get $400 back = $1299, amazing price if you need other stuff also. Can't really compare 70D to 6D.

  • The D5100 @ Big W is also a very nice buy @ $474. I'd rate it a better camera than the 600D.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/170077

    • can you please state the reasons as to why?

      • +1

D5100 has a larger sensor (although lower resolution), so performs better in low light.
Better kit lens than the Canon.
Better battery life (660 vs. 440 shots)
Slightly faster FPS performance (4 vs. 3.7 fps), with a much larger cache.
Although very similar the Nikon produces a better Raw output, and a more pleasing Jpg image (Less processed).
HDR and Chromatic aberration correction in camera.

An area the Canon excels is manual exposure controls in video, but is missing the continuous auto-focus feature the D5100 has.

Both are excellent camera's for the price, but personally I like the D5100 more.

  • Sorry OP I changed the expiry because the price ended on Sunday as per this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/168970. The price is now $649.00, so it has now been marked as expired, but an alternative deal is now available https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/170094

    • Oh sorry I see what happened. Thanks for fixing it.

      • That's ok. The alternative deal has now expired too. Another price error from Dick.

For anybody considering buying this camera, it's a fantastic camera to learn the ropes on. Great if you're looking at maybe taking some photos and learning the ropes of some more advanced methods.
If you already know a fair bit and will be looking at upgrading in the future, may be worth looking at the next rank up, maybe a 70d. But if you have a tight budget, want to learn on the cheap, and aren't sure if you'll be progressing, this is a fantastic kit that I used for a while. I'd highly recommend.
To give you a brief idea, all of these shots were taken with the 600d and the stock 18-55 lens in the last month. The macro shots use a $10 reversing ring.
