iPhone 6 Plan Problems!

Hi,

So the situation is that my current TPG plan (phone number) is in my dad's name and he is in Melbourne. However, I live in Canberra (due to university) and am trying to get a iPhone 6 with Virgin on their 30 (+25 handset fee) plan.

BUT

They aren't allowing me to get the phone as they require my dad to come in personally for his details with his license etc… I got my dad to call TPG to see what could be done and they said that all I need is the account number and his birth date. So I went back to the Virgin store and tried to get the phone again but apparently it is illegal to do so without my dad actually present… I went over to vodafone and asked if it was possible to get an iPhone and have my number transferred immediately with the information and the salesman said he could do it!

However, the deal at Virgin is a lot better so I'm wondering how I can get the deal with my situation… (They tried explaining about porting this or that here and there or going into store in Melbourne or getting the phone and sending it here… but I didn't understand too much)

Thanks you for reading.

Ask your dad to visit a Virgin store in Melbourne, sign the iPhone contract you are after, get the phone and Sim and express post it to you via Australia Post.

P.S you might have nomobile service for a couple of hours to a day due to porting.

    • Yeah, I've thought of that but due to postage, no phone etc I was wondering if there were any other options :(

      • Australia Post will let you post a battery as long as inside the device, and mobile phone companies like vodaphone regularly use auatralia post express mail to post online orders

  • Is your dad able to visit a store in person at all? If he is, then I guess last resort would be for him to get the phone and post it to you. Disadvantages being $$$ to send via insured post etc and of course the package being "misplaced" en route.

You also said you got your dad to call TPG. Why don't you have him call Virgin to see if anything can be done? Pretty much any store these days seem to have the ability to provide a different billing and shipping names/address, so maybe it could also work in this case.

Good luck! Virgin plans are definitely great at the moment - just signed up to a plan myself less than a week ago for their 2gb bonus.

    • Yeah that was the deal I was trying to get done as well… But since I'm on TPG at the moment, apparently they aren't allowed to give the 2GB bonus unless I quickly switch over to some prepaid number under a non Optus provider and then quickly switch back instantly to the plan. So, with these little quirks as well, just further complicates matters !

  • why not transfer ownership into your name with tpg then port the number to virgin once it's in your name?

  • Very simple than going around in circles

    • ask your dad to call Virgin and buy the deal and ask them to post it to your (dads's requested address) canberra address. The courier just need the photo id of the person receiving no questions asked.

    • xfer the number to your Name with TPG i.e Change Of Ownership when done …"..within days the plan will be in your hands.

    Simples ….

    • That was the original plan but when my dad called TPG, all they suggested was that it could be done with the account number and birth date which was apparently illegal without him actually being there so that didn't work out as planned.

But thanks a lot for the other option, I might try that ! Assuming that works and I receive the phone, do I simply walk into a Virgin store here to get a new SIM for the new phone that arrived in the mail? What will happen once he buys the plan and transfers the number, do I need a new SIM for my current iphone 4 as well?

  • This is the stuff you have to put up with if you have your phone in your dad's name - of course they would have to have your dad come in. I'm sure it's probably the law that they have to cite ID due to regulations around getting a phone…etc, but of course, if it's in your dad's name, then ultimately he's the one who will have to sign the contract.

Best bet is like what others have suggested, have your dad come in and do it himself and then post the phone to you - this would be the most surefire and "proper" way of doing it.

An alternative would be to just have it under your name. It's probably under your dad's name because you were once under 18 and couldn't sign contracts…etc, but you're in uni and old enough now, so would probably be easiest to just put it under your name instead to avoid all this future hassle.

  • Yes is it illegal. You do not own the number. You will be signing something saying you are the legal owner of that number. Any operator who knows you aren't and does it anyway is taking a risk.

First and formost i assume you have or will pass a credit assessment. if so you have two options. if not you are sil and you can only do what your dad can organise.

    2 options

    1. The right way.Get you dad to ring tps and let them know that someone will be taking over the account. You ring tpg and complete a transfer of ownership. Once the phone is in your name you are free to do as you wish.

    2. Go and buy a $2 vodafone sim. Register it and do the port. this way is dodgy but you are taking all the risk yourselff.
