FAT DUCK - What restaurant/food would you spend $525 on instead?

It is ridiculous how this manufactured hype has made so many people jealous of not getting a GOLDEN TICKET.

Personally, I think its ridiculous, and I have been a fan of Heston's ever since his first TV series, In Search of Perfection, in 2006.

So what restaurant/food would you spend $525 on instead?

I think id want to go and eat Vietnamese Soups, and Japanese Ramens, at as many Melbourne restaurants as i could in a year. Id probably have change at the end too.

Kimchi… Lots and lots of kimchi… They're good for you and I wouldn't get bored of it. Wonder if there are any "authentic" kimchi stores in Syd.

    • I had a friend in the Aus Navy and he once told me a story of meeting these Sth Korean Navy officers who were insistent on trading their surplus barrels of Kimchi because everyone on board was sick of it.

      • lol @ the fact they have surplus barrels of kimchi…

  • "What restaurant/food would you spend $525 on"

$25 of that would be food & the $500 pure snobbery.

  • So what restaurant/food would you spend $525 on instead?

None, I would buy stuff I would actually use over a period of time, not food that goes in one end and out the other the next day.

Hmm.. I read that with the front letters swapped then the words swapped.. which is fitting, because $525 would last a few months of food.

Or is that the point? :)

    • Worth rereading the above post to make sure you get it!

I guess you won't know until you try it. For some people, they see value in the fact that it is an experience that you can't get anywhere else. That being said, I have eaten at restaurants run by some of these so-called celebrity chefs and it is like @xywolap said, $25 worth of food and $500 snobbery.

  • i take it not many here have tried a dégustation recently?

Depends if calling it that allows you to charge $525 and a bit of luck in a lottery system.

  • No restaurant for $525.

  • I'm not paying $525 for one meal when I could buy food for a family for a three weeks for the same cost.

    • Or apparently, if you give it to world vision, it could feed a village in Africa for 525 weeks… or was that months…

That $525 is getting on for 2000 packets of 2-minute noodles…
Best meal I ever had was at a B&B we stayed at. After we arrived, they offered wife and me a 3-course dinner for $90 each. When we ummed and ahhed, they tossed a bottle of wine in the deal (it was an NZ Sauv Blanc, not pricey but nice enough).
We said yes and it was at this point that the owner of the place mentioned that his wife studied for 12 months at the Cordon Bleu Academy in Paris and had worked as a chef for 25 years.
I remember every bite. Marvelous meal. We immediately asked if we could follow up the next night, and it was just as good. By that stage, we bought a bottle of French bubbly, which we shared with our hosts.
Went back and stayed there 2 more times. Brilliant, not the most expensive meal I have had, but one of the best. When was the last time you had a Cordon Bleu chef prepare a meal, just for two of you, for $180?
Unfortunately they have sold the business and retired now.
I would love to have a chew at Heston's but he would have to go pretty well to match that.

My sister and niece went to the fat duck in 2010 and still think it was money well spent. I don't think it was $525 though it was expensive. Sometimes it can be worth it - it they said it was like dinner and a show.

    • Yes, thats a valid point. It's a show.

But its not an original show anymore. Gordon Ramsey does Thai Green Curry icecream too.

  • My wife and I were in Sydney, and we went to Neil Perry's Rockpool, the one in the rocks. It was the best meal that I have ever had. For a special occasion, it was money well spent.
On the other hand we went to Rockpool Bar & Grill in Perth. It was a complete waste of money.
