Good Mobile Plan with Data and Strong Network

first time poster, long time lurker….

Looking to switch to a cheaper plan as my iphone 5's contract finished up. (Voda, unlimited sms & calls 1Gb)

  1. currently get about 1Gb per month which is alright but sometimes not enough if I'm travelling or doing alot of internet surfing whilst on train so would prefer 1.5-2gb
  2. I go through tunnels on my train line and reception doesn't drop out buy 3G & 4G on Vodafone does, which I would prefer to have.
  3. Thinking I will stick to a new plan for anywhere between 6-12 months whilst I decide on a new phone.
  4. Preferably no SIM fee as I may only be on the new provider for 6 months and pick a contract again. Although if the overall 6 month cost is cheaper, open to SIM fee.

Any views on the coverage and data charge by Vaya? Boost? I've heard some horror stories on ozB about charging by the megabyte which totally freaks me out

I can highly recommend Vaya & their Power Plan 18 (V2) for $18 pm.

Optus network, if they have good coverage for areas you need then this is great plan imo.

I really had bad experience with them. Vaya is bad in customer service and excess data usage. The worst part is that usage information is 48 hours behind and even customer service team cannot tell you the exact usage.

      • Set a limit on your phone data settings so you never go over, easily done, and well worth the 30 seconds it takes to do.

        • What happens if your phone data settings usage does not match with Vaya usage. Who wins - Vaya; and then customer pay extra. For $16 plan, I paid $32 and $34 each month, once with excess data usage and other will excess call usage because Vaya can only provide the usage details prior to 48 hrs.

        • @akd: I have the same concerns of what happened to akd happening to me - sometimes I cut the line fine with my existing Vodafone plan & that's a 14hour lag on usage?

Plus Vaya charges by MB so that's another concern for me since the train tunnels tend to end my 3G connection

For OPs type of usage (on train moving between towers), Vaya's MB session rounding would be a killer. You need to stay with a provider that uses KB session rounding, such as Telechoice or Spintel.

      • [@spockter] I would agree with you spent yesterday looking at Telechoice and Better Life (which got posted in the forums) - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/169626
I'm not sure if my current plan with Vodafone goes by MB session rounding or kb session rounding but I thinkg it would be kb session purely as it's always guaranteed I will drop out on my train line's tunnels.

My dilemma now is I don't need 3GB so paying the extra $8 at telechoice for 1.5gb seems excessive

Thanks for the tips! Shall check out Spintel too :)
