  • Pretty good deal.
Bought toshiba A600 one month ago, otherwise I will go for this X200.

  • hot price! could this offer combine with moneybackco cashback?

  • +2

Love the $1 ultrabase option for the x200 and the 6 cell $24.20

  • +2

Some upgrades I would definitely get were I to buy this:

    ThinkPad X200 UltraBase [add AU$1.00]
    X200 6 cell Enhanced Battery [add AU$24.20]
Add a 3 Year Warranty for only $1. Save $213.50

    Subtotal: AU$3,622.80
    Sale Price: AU$1,825.20
    Estimated total: AU$1,369.15

Seems to be a flat 25% off, since the discount scales up with various upgrades I tried. For AU$1,369.15, this seems like a pretty sweet deal! Does anyone see any issues with it?

    Would like some opinions:

    Intel Core 2 Duo processor T9400 (2.53GHz, 6MB L2,1066MHz) [add AU$330.00]

How does the T9400 rate against the P8700? Worth the $330 difference?

    320GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm [add AU$77.00]

Is a 5400rpm drive that much slower, especially for laptop usage? Worth the $77?

DVD Recordable, Ultrabay Slim [add AU$199.10]

Does anyone deem this neccesary? I was thinking of getting an external DVD drive for around the $60-$80 range, for those times when I need to install directly from CD/DVD.

    X200 9 cell Enhanced Battery [add AU$41.03]

Is the 9-cell upgrade worth an extra $41 on top of the 6-cell upgrade?

    • Yoink!

Nabbed it, as per above, with 9 cell battery.
      Total AU$1,399.92.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll report back here once I receive it.

How does the T9400 rate against the P8700? Worth the $330 difference?

      No. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=378903

Is a 5400rpm drive that much slower, especially for laptop usage? Worth the $77?

For some things maybe. It'll run hotter and use more power too though so it depends on what's important to you.

Does anyone deem this neccesary? I was thinking of getting an external DVD drive for around the $60-$80 range, for those times when I need to install directly from CD/DVD.

An internal optical drive would certainly be useful I think but should only really be an issue if you want to watch DVDs, play games (many of which require the disk in to play), etc.

Is the 9-cell upgrade worth an extra $41 on top of the 6-cell upgrade?

It's a trade off of weight vs battery life. Again it depends on what's important to you.

    • +2

I wouldn't waste your money on anything except the bigger battery. Nothing else makes that much different, the CPU will be a bit faster, but they are already fast enough for most things you do.

I would love to get this, have owned a number of Thinkpads. They are built to last, great machines. I like the x series as well, have had the x21, x41, as well as t42. Great little machines. I would be all over this, if I hadn't switched to macs 6 months ago. Thinkpads and Macbooks are the only laptops worth buying if you ask me, if you want something decent and that will last. If you want something cheap and nasty, that won't last that long, get a Dell or HP.

      • My friend works at a company that deals with large numbers of ex-lease equipment, and I get to see how different brands fare after a few years of use. HPs last just as long as ThinkPads - they're both still solid. Some dells are ok, some get creaky as they age, just like Toshibas.

Of course, these are all their business-class laptops. The cheaper home range will be different, e.g. a Lenovo IdeaPad will probably last just as long as a Dell Inspiron. The ThinkPad really should be compared to the Latitudes/Precisions or HP n-business series.

      • I, too, have heard of the reputation of Lenovos as great laptops, though the transition from IBM resulted in a dip in quality.

        • I've got a current-model thinkpad now, no complaints about build quality at all. What I don't like though, is the screen. It's perfectly fine for business use (text stuff), but it doesn't hold a candle to the screens on some Vaios (the TZ is spectacular!) and the older 1400x1050 screens on the T-series. That, and the lack of an sd card reader (x301). what the heck??

    • Is a 5400rpm drive that much slower, especially for laptop usage? >Worth the $77?

I'd use the savings to try to and get an SSD - they really leave platter drives in the dust. Everything's far more responsive. OCZ's Indilinx-chipset drives are good value.

      • +1

Keep saving dude, cheapest 256gb SSD on Staticice = $758! :p

Sadly, SSDs have not yet reached a price per gb point where they are a viable mainstream replacement for mechanical drives; they do, however, remain a fantastic adjunct (ie boot drive) to many systems applications! ;)

Unfortunately though, often in a laptop/note/netbook form factor you're limited to one or the other! :(

        • +1

256GB is huge for an SSD … the thing is, not everyone needs a large SSD. Or a large HDD in their laptops for that matter. A 120GB HDD is more than enough for an OS and app drive - even 60GB is more than enough for most people. Normal data doesn't benefit that much from an SSD anyway, as you sorta mentioned above. You can replace the optical drive with a second spinning HDD if you really need a huge amount of space, otherwise you can complement the $300 60GB SSD with a $240 64GB expresscard SSD… or even a large SD card.

This is the kind of adaptor that would let you replace the optical drive with a 500GB hdd, allowing you to run a 60/120GB SSD as the main boot drive:

          http://cgi.ebay.com/2nd-hard-drive-Caddy-For-LENOVO-Thinkpad…

          • +1

@eug: Yep, that capability for this model and the 2nd HDD caddy at a decent price certainly puts a new spin on things! (no pun intended) ;)

You're absolutely right, a modest SSD/HDD combo based on your needs/budget would be spot-on! :)

A lot of folks I know have abandoned their desktops and solely use their laptops now, so they want big HDDs; but you're right, I only have a 120gb HDD in my laptop and it's more than sufficient for me as I still mainly use my desktop PC! ;)

  • +3

"How does the T9400 rate against the P8700? Worth the $330 difference?"
Minimal difference theoretically, negligible practically, so absolutely not worth $330! ;)

"Is a 5400rpm drive that much slower, especially for laptop usage? Worth the $77?"
IME, rotational speed is not (within reason)the only factor in drive performance, HDD's are a complex blend of geometry, interleave, controller, interface and management! I've seen 5400rpm drives that outperform 7200rpm units on all tests! Short answer, no, you would probably see no practical difference, so I'd save the $77! ;)

"DVD Recordable, Ultrabay Slim [add AU$199.10]Does anyone deem this neccesary?"
Unless you've got a specific need for CD/DVD on the go, no I think your external drive plan is much more sensible! ;)

"Is the 9-cell upgrade worth an extra $41 on top of the 6-cell upgrade?"
Hell yeah, you can never have enough battery power in a mobile computer, and that's a fair price IMHO! ;)

    • +3

IME, rotational speed is not (within reason)the only factor in drive performance, HDD’s are a complex blend of geometry, interleave, controller, interface and management!

In my opinion, marketing departments (particularly Western Digital) have succeeded in their aims :)

It is indeed very possible for 5400rpm drives to outperform 7200rpm drives, but this is obviously not a rule. While there are many variables that contribute to overall performance, rotational speed is probably the single most significant, even if it can be outweighed by other variables in combination.

That said, there are many cases in which a rotationally slower HDD makes much more sense - particularly in laptop computers - due to lower cost, energy consumption, temperature and vibration. Mass storage frequently stands to gain much more from those than from higher performance (if it comes at the cost of power, heat and vibration).

I’ve seen 5400rpm drives that outperform 7200rpm units on all tests!

I'm aware of 5400rpm drives that have outperformed 7200rpm drives in some tests, but haven't yet seen a "clean sweep". That would be interesting if you have a link.

Obviously all benchmarks should be taken with a grain of salt (probably many of us know that from personal experience), so prepare your salt for my non-authoritative experience :)

      • 5400rpm WD10EACS with 16mb cache and 250gb platters.
      • 7200rpm Seagate .10 and .11 with 16-32mb cache and 188-375gb platters.
      • 10,000rpm WD Raptor with 8mb cache and 37gb platter.

The WD10EACS can only be described as unique :) It is always slower when writing; couldn't say for reading (don't run any programs on it). But it's not always slower by a significant amount, and it is always 4-6° cooler than the other drives while essentially silent.

Even with only 8mb cache and a puny 37gb platter, the Raptor is equal fastest, along with a 1.5TB Seagate 7200.11 (with 4× the cache and platters 10× the size). The Raptor is clearly the loudest in operation, you'll never have to wonder if it's active or idle.

Short answer, no, you would probably see no practical difference, so I’d save the $77! ;)

In my opinion, yes, you would probably see a practical difference - performance should be noticeably better. But that gain may not be worth the premium or the higher power consumption, temperature and vibration, which have particular implications for laptop computers. It depends on your requirements/preferences and the extent of the difference (which is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to know).

Like StewBalls, I'd also save the $77 :)

DVD Recordable, Ultrabay Slim [add AU$199.10]
      Does anyone deem this neccesary?

I think you'd find very few people who consider a $199 DVD drive/recorder a necessity.

Is the 9-cell upgrade worth an extra $41 on top of the 6-cell upgrade?

Battery life is generally one of the most important aspects as StewBalls conveyed, but particularly also if you take the 7200rpm drive option. 9-cell for +$41 is very much worth it.

      • +1

With regard to my practical experience of 5400rpm drives outperforming 7200 counterparts, I must confess I'm going back a number of years to the earlier incarnations of WD 7200 models, personally benching them against otherwise identically spec'd WD 5400 equivalents, apples vs apples! I'm far too apathetic to go in search of a corroborating link, but I'm sure others of this era have similar experience! ;)

This was an (albeit extreme, as you indeed state not a rule by any means) example of how increasing spindle speed alone had actually a detrimental effect on drive performance, and cannot be relied upon to be the overriding factor in considering a HDD! I have a bucketload of practical experience over the long years with these things, and using this I have honestly not seen a significant practical real world performance difference at the UI between 5400 & 7200rpm drives of otherwise similar spec! There are far too many other confounding factors at work in the day to day all around performance of a HDD for spindle speed alone to have much more than a modest effect on some aspects of a HDD's performance! ;)

Therefore, I stand by my assertion that in real world use, at the UI (not drive benchmarks) there would be no practical difference between the two, all other things being equal ie apples vs apples! My best advice is set your drive up properly first for your system, keep it well ordered and defragged, and it'll work just fine regardless of specs on paper! ;)

Now, this is just my experience, others will swear different, and will be equally valid, but I'm a stingy pragmatist, I see no point in spending unnecessary money unless you're getting real bang for buck! We do both agree on saving the $77 though, and ultimately that's a good thing! :)

I wouldn't recommend getting the t9400 as it gets rather hot, I have one in my hp and its definitely not worth the 330 dollar upgrade. I'm not too sure what hardrive speed I have in my hp but 7200rpm does make a difference, generates more heat, therefore I rather have a slightly slower hardrive. Also you can get externals 320gb for aorun 90 bucks so i don't think it worthy of the upgrade. I definitely wouldn't recommend blowing nearly 200 bucks on a dvd drive burner as like some previous deals like pioneer had desktop external dvd burners for about 60 bucks and since your ultrabay stays at home or business or whatever, your burner won't be moved around either however I guess the ultrabay dvd burner might look nicer. Im not too sure how big a 9 cell would look on the x200 however like typical batteries on laptops they're rather big however they do give you alot more battery life. I guess it really depends on your needs however I think the 41 dollar upgrade is a reasonable price.

    Conclusion:
    -CPU not worth upgrading
-HD is very dependent on what you want however your computer might run slightly slower but will generate less heat and the 77 bucks for the upgrade I believe isn't really worth it.
-DVD burner in my opinion not worthy buying either due to the price
-Battery wise i think its a reasonable upgrade depending on the wieght and how it looks after installed onto your laptop but believe me, a 9 cell does make alot of difference in terms on how long you laptop will last with a charge

Thanks for the prompt responses StewBalls and aznsniper. I did some quick research on the batteries.

    ThinkPad X200 Series 6 Cell Li-Ion Battery (43R9254) 6.5 hours
    ThinkPad X200 Series 9 Cell Li-Ion Battery (43R9255) 9.8 hours

An extra 3 hours would be great. Web retail difference is $30, so decent price as well.

The difference in battery dimensions can be found in the links above. I'm estimating that it would stick out an extra 2cm at the back. Could someone confirm?

    • +1

Maybe you would like to take into account the weight of the battery as well. Found this on the internet:
      * 4-cell battery starting at 1.34 kg / 2.95 lbs
      * 6-cell battery starting at 1.47 kg / 3.24 lbs
      * 9-cell battery starting at 1.63 kg / 3.58 lbs

  • How do you get it down to around $1300, i went to the checkout the total is abour $1800.

    • "eCoupon" code in shopping cart before checkout.

      • Thanks.. got the right price..

        • Is that with 20% off monday coupon? What other eCoupon are you using?

  • nice discounts there. Would definitely recommend the bigger battery IF you don't mind the extra weight…

  • Like anything I guess there are things I'd prefer if they were slightly different.

    • Vista Business seems to be the only one with a 64 bit option even it can go to 8GB of RAM. Where is Home Premium 64 or Ultimate 64?
    • The LED BL display is only on 1280x800 not 1680x1050;
    • The port replicator is the basic one and doesn't include the power cord. It only has a VGA port. DVI would've been nice but I guess that's to be expected;
    • On-site and/or accidental warranty rather than return to base might've been nice; and
    • The X200 has no Windows 7 free upgrade option.

Still, for ~$1350 the T500 spec is pretty tempting.

  • RE the x200

Nice cheap upgrades, but no dvd burner? something to do with the laser module shortage again? i'd rather a dvd drive than a dock. This is a good price though to be expected with the stronger exchange rates.

great price but not one that you'd want to jump on without further ado

  • whats the resolution on the x200 12.1 inch screen?

i think i would add to extra RAm too!

  • The best deal in this month!!

  • Will you get a free Windows 7 upgrade?

    • only for T series

  • These are Lenovo's business class series. T series > R series > SL series. I was about to pull the trigger on an inferior spec'd T series laptop for over $2000. I'd vote you up more than 1 if I could!!!!!!

  • You can't go wrong with a Thinkpad. I got the X61s (or older generation X200) < 2 years ago at almost 2000 with 9 cells

  • Thanks - I think I will buy one for my self.
Not sure of the 15.4" LED LCD resolution though.

  • X200 with a T9400/P8700 is serious grunt in a tiny package. Last time saw this sort of price was in Feb 22. If add a DIY ViDock then get mid-level gaming ability too via a desktop HD4670, or other preferably ATI graphics card running at x1 1.0. Awesome!!

  • When does it expire?

    • Tomorrow is your last day.

      • The website says offer extended for today only. Is that for warrnty or port replicator?

  • whats the graphic card like on this?

  • Is there an EPP code available for this as well?

  • Whats annoying is the US seems to give the Windows 7 upgrade on this but Lenovo AU does not.

    • The upgrade is not free but the option is there! @ US$ 25.00 for shipping of media.

  • I'm having a tough time deciding what screen to get for the t500… cause i don't see resolutions there. Any advice on the LED or the more expensive WSXGA+ would be greatly appreciated!

    • It says with LCD it uses less power, resolution is 1200x800.

  • +1

Also with port replicator make sure the laptop you are buying has 90w power supply other wise you will have to buy the power supply seperately as it will not work with 65w power supply.

  • Would anyone mind putting up the spec table of X200 that can bring it down to $13XX ?

  • I cant decide :(, better t500 or x200? any opinion?

  • I choose the T series because it offered the Windows 7 upgrade and OLED.

    • just so people don't get confused, he meant LED backlight and not OLED. A 15" OLED screen would probably be 10k for the screen alone, if they were available. ;)

still works to bring the X200 to $1351, but the T500 only goes down to $1281.20…

            • +1

@vapordrops: The X200 is now $1276 with port replicator and carry bag with the above coupon.

              • @northerly: Woah, even cheaper!

I prefer the old price with the 2 extra (3 total) year RTM upgrade, though I guess a lower price plus a carry bag might be a better sweetener for some.

  • Got mine today - superfast delivery. I am a bit disappointed with the screen.

    • i have a t400 and i presume the display quality is similar to yours.

you can improve it vastly by using the ATI card, and playing with the saturation, highlight/lowlight, and various other settings.

once these are fiddled with (oh an gamma too), the display gets close to what's acceptable. better than macbook at least.

though of course you sacrifice bat life. win some lose some

    • The screen's fine… maybe a bit washed out on the blacks. But a lot better than a glossy one.

I'm more disappointed with the keyboard. It's not as nice and clacky as the one on my T40. And the silver buttons are just tacky.
