New 70 Inch + TV

Hi guys, Im looking for a new 70 inch plus TV to replace the 10 year old 50 inch Pioneer plasma my dad has. It doesn't have to be ultra HD (as I can't really tell a difference between a good HD set and an UHD set at 70-80 inches).

While the Pioneer and set top box set him back $7k a decade ago (I think its a HD-506 model), he doesn't want to spend anything like that this time around. He was keen on the Sony W850B 70 inch model, which Costco had on sale for $2399. But when I went to see it, the picture was lacklustre at best, and terrible in comparison to the Samsungs next to it. This was in contrast to the reviews which said the W850B had high picture quality, so it was confusing. I subsequently found out in forums that this TV has some production issues, and I should steer away from it. So the question remains, what TV should he buy? Staying under $2500 is desired and 65 inches doesn't cut it, it has to be 70 inches or above. Any help would be appreciated. The next choice is the LG 70LB6560 which is more expensive but seems to have better picture quality? Opinions and examples are most welcome and appreciated.

Who is who? Oh. My dad. Sorry I took a retard pill instead of an aspirin this morning.

    • He is he or is he ?

  • Dick smiths have been having a lot of sales lately but i dont recall if they had a 70 " inch one " i bought a 65" seki one " which is pretty huge " and i noticed weve been using our Projector less since " 100 - 120 inch screen " Awesome for game of thrones though.

    Have you tried Kogan ?

    • It needs to be an Australian warranted product, preferably with a bricks and mortar store.

Im not sure Kogan is known for high quality products and service.

I'd like to steer away from the likes of Seiki, and stick to the big brands If I can. Seiki are great for the price, but have some serious short comings also.

  • Sony 70W850B is the best TV at this size and price (excluding UHD models)

Must have been something changed on the settings of the one in store. Reset it to default, change it to cinema mode and compare bluray/HD material.

If you never watch movies or never watch things at night time the Samsung 65" 6 series will be cheaper and brighter.

That's what I read when I read the reviews. But having seen two in store now, its apparent that the blacks aren't black and the colours and sharpness are muted at best. I then started looking through AV forum threads, and from what I have seen, this TV has some serious production issues, the 3D component doesn't work at all, and even worse, it has this massive rippling effect on the screen. If you put a white screen up, it looks like someone has taken a photo of something being dropped into a body of water. I really liked the Sony, until I saw it in person and was underwhelmed. It seems from reading forums, that you can't fix this in the settings. Its actually worse than his current decade old Pioneer, despite the Pioneer having a lower resolution.

The 65 inch TV is too small. It has to be 70 inches or above, but thanks for the suggestion. Any idea how the LG stacks up on paper? It certainly beats it in real life.

      • lol again basing it on an in store view, is ridiculous. How about going in store and asking to change the video. Do the same with the other 'amazing' tv's and you will soon realize the demos videos played are a load of crap.

Much worse than a 10 year old Pioneer, I think not.

LG is crap, its either Samsung or Sony or the Panasonic Plasma for tv experts.

You have unrealistic expectations given your budget- if you want 70 inch+ that suits your criteria better be ready to pay the big dollars.

For your budget the Sony is perfect and there is nothing else that is better.

  • The only other option apart from those already discussed seems to be the Sharp, also available at The Good Guys if that's more convenient.

    • Haven't Sharp TVs always been a little less than?

      • It was $21xx a little while ago. In general, their reputation hasn't been as good as Samsung, LG or Sony recently but given the small range of TVs you are looking at you might as well go and have a look at it in person. Quality can vary quite a bit between models.

  • I was looking at doing the same thing last christmas and opted for a Panasonic 65inch plasma.

never looked back. the ST model I bought is less than half what the VT model was selling for with almost the same features. the difference I thought was negligible. based on price difference.

I think you'll have a greater choice for product at 65 inches. rather than 70 inches,

  • UHD … No content, none… Will never be broadcast content

1080P … You will get BRAY

    1080i … HD TV channels

    720P Broadcast TV standard channels

70" is a way big size and your paying over the odds for the size, 65" is better bang for buck and 1080i/p looks great on (most) TV's

JBHIFI would be my first pic but checkout goodgus, dicksmith, harveys, joycemaine

TEAC had dual tunner built in; thats a +… Also getting google TV built in would be my next +1 for a smart TV (save a dongle/box) and most have wifi but look for N for speed…

SMART TV is a TV's best feature these days; getting one that replaces the extra cost of a PVR is more important than 5" screen size difference! Avoid PROPRIOTRY stores like LG ect, just a standard google account should be the only sign in you need and then you have standard apps that are kept up to date like ABC/SBS/10/9/7

  • It has to be at least 70 inch, 65 is too small. There is a big difference when looking at 65 vs 70inch. It's a lot more than 5 inches

  • Dammit, Dicksmith had the LG 70 inch at $2500 tonight and it sold out straight away.

The Sony Ultra HD 65 inch for $2700 is tempting but just too small.

  • Myer currently have the LG 3D 70" online for $2,899.

    • Yeah thats not a good deal. Costco has it for $2500
