Since you have changed your question to "HELP - How to restore PC hard drive?" I'm going to ask you few questions..

    1) Do you have backup of your computer?
    2) Did your hubby formatted all the data including OS or just some user data and you can still use your computer/laptop?

There are many many ways to recover data from a freshly formatted hard drive.

Using Testdisk this video shows you how to recover an accidentally formatted partition.

    http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/276591-45-recover-formatteā€¦

    Important to remember:

    1. DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES TO THE DRIVE THAT WAS ACCIDENTALLY FORMATTED. If you place any new files or data onto the formatted drive, it will overwrite the old data — in other words it will significantly reduce the chances of successfully restoring the files that were wiped.

    2. When recovering the data from the accidentally formatted drive, you will need to have one other disk for the recovery program to put the recovered files into. The recovery program cannot place files straight back into the drive it is trying to recover from — refer to point number 1.

If you follow the instructions on the video step by step you shouldn't have a problem getting most, or all of the files back.

Thanks for all your help. Hubby is using Easeus at the moment, taking a long time, but seems working…fingers crossed.
He said it's also finding stuff that were deleted/trashed long long time ago. And many duplicate files. Over 200,000 files already! I guess finding EVERYTHING is better than nothing. It's a long process to recover those files, and even longer process to sort out those files… now he's paying for his stupid mistake.
    Thanks again.

  • Hi NancyCat,

Glad you're retrieving your data- albeit the long, arduous, nail-biting way but at least you will get it back.

Just taking a moment to tell you/others what I tell all of my clients re: data- at the very least, get yourself (2) portable backup drives to house the non-replaceables (mainly photographs or scanned documents). Those drives should each contain the same data. They should only be plugged in to the PC when adding data- otherwise you risk virus &/or power surge. To be extra safe, a third copy should be "off-site", a friend, family member, or cloud. This is in case of fire or theft.

RE: data transfer- always virus scan anything downloaded that's going onto the external drives beforehand. Usually, you can do this by right-clicking the folder/file & looking for your antivirus option to scan.

    Cheers
