  • Have you got a fairly dark room?

    • no i dont have but i can buy curtains and will be using mostly in the night

      • +1

To run a projector effectively the room needs to be dark, depends what else you need to use the room for which can make it inconvenient.

If you are looking at a hdmi projector that perhaps means you want high res, having a dark room or bright projector would certainly help

I did the projector thing for a while and found it better value and convenient to use a TV instead.

        • +1

depends on the projector, mine lights up the whole room easily. Small room but still reflects off all the walls and makes it quite bright!

        • @Woodyg22: which projector do u have?

        • @ozzyoi: epson eb-w12

Got it for $250 as an exrental that was also on sale

          I was very lucky!

  • What sort of quality are you after and what is your budget?

    • @cypher 67 . decent quality would be fine budget is not much around $100- $120

      • You need to do a little more research, for $100 you will get a pocket projector which would be ok for data shows and presentations in a meeting or at best watching youtube video in low res. You will not get anything that you would want to watch a movie on. The resolution your talking about is the same res as your old box TVs on standard def. You need to get your budget up around $600 to get something someone wants to watch a movie on, at least.

You typically won't find anything decent in the $100-$200 range for projectors. I'd expect that anything in that price range would suit someone who is either blind (actually blind) or doesn't care that you'll almost get a better picture from your phone.

  • I just happened to see this article yesterday.
    http://9to5toys.com/2014/11/05/viewsonic-led-projector-chrom…

While the headline says 1080p, the details say they only actually display 1280x800 (wxga). But are "1080p compatible".

    • nice article $599 is too high for my budget. Thanks for sharing the link though

      • +6

If $599 is too high for your budget then a projector isn't for you.

This is something you need to understand with projectors or you will end up with something that most people would laugh at.

I'm no expert, but 'Native Resolution 320 x 240' does not seem very appealing to me.

      • thanks, but it says Supported resolution: 1920x 1080 as well right?

        • +2

That's just misleading. The picture it can make on your wall is only 320x240, which will look rubbish. But you can send it a 1080p signal. It will just downscale it to play it. Very dodgy marketing.

I suspect your budget is not nearly high enough for anything other than displaying low quality PowerPoint presentations.

        • @salem: thanks, i can go up to $200- $ 250 for a good one any suggestions pls

          @ozzyoi:

This site suggests that the "cheap" end of the projector market is in the $600-900 range.

          http://www.justprojectors.com.au/hometheatre.htm

That seems about right from my very casual eye on the projector market.

No. A 'good' projector could cost $15k. You will not get a 'good' projector for $100-120. That's just ridiculous.

If you are serious, you should be looking at projectors that have

    Full HD
    at least 1500 lumens
    less than 26-30db fan noise

plus any other desired features. You'll be lucky to find this for under $900

    • my purpose for a projector is only for watching videos /movies for max 1 hour a day. I use the laptop most of the time, but find the screen too small was looking at few lcd 40"tvs but i suddenly got interested in a projector.
      Thanks for ur comment though

      What about this one?
      AAXA P450 Micro projector

      • thanks i will look into it :) cheers

Everything you find for under $900 will be designed for PowerPoint presentations, nothing more. You'll experience:

    • Terrible resolution (remember, blowing up a small resolution over a wall becomes very noticeable). Furthermore, the aspect ratio might only be something like 4:3

    • Terrible colours (nothing will look right)

    • Terrible brightness and contrast (either not enough lamp brightness or too little; might be impossible to see detail, either murky or washed out; and the colour 'black' will not look black)

    • Poor lamp life and possibly price (projector lamps can cost hundreds of dollars to replace, and they only last so many hours before they 'break')

I'm sorry ozzyoi, but you'll have to spend over $900 to get anything half decent. I recommend looking at the BenQ W1070. Officeworks occasionally has them for $900 or so; its a popular 'budget' projector with quite good specs and picture quality for its price.

Of course, once you have a projector, you'll need a dark room (almost completely pitch black is best) with a large wall. You'll then need to buy a screen of some type. Pre-made 60" screens easily cost at least $200. You can make your own with some canvas, but you'll need to support it correctly to make sure its straight. The canvas obviously has to be coloured white.

Furthermore, you'll then need a sound system. Projectors don't usually have speakers (some do; but they're not designed for anything but PowerPoint swoosh effects). If you're already paying at least $900 for a projector, you may aswell spend a couple of hundred on this to make it good.

If your budget is only ~$200, you'd best drop the idea and save for a larger TV.

    • thanks :) it helped

    • Motion blur will also be horrendous at this price range too. While it'll be fine for power point presentations, when you play movies or sports, you may end up with a mostly unwatchable picture.

Just give it up, you wont get anything you are happy with, with a budget of $120.

  • Aldi is having one next week for 299

  • Any info on the aldi projector? I'm just curious. Ironically just started watching my first movie on my new 120" setup. The daughter is watching frozen before she goes to bed. In running a nec 720p p420x. Picked it up dirt cheap from an asset sale. Not super happy with it so I'm looking at something just over 1k.

  • I got a benq full hd projector for around $800. projects around 120 inch from around 4.2m setback. I use it for gaming connected to my pc rig. I use a professional screen that has reflective coating which adds to the brightness and contrast of the image.

    • What model is your projector?

  • -2

It's a silly idea. Anything under $7500 inc screen and installation you're better off with an LCD…

  • That's a silly comment. Someone with a 20k setup will scoff at your 7.5k begin basement setup. Because I have 5+k of coffee equip and roast my own beans I guess I get to say anything less and you may as well drink instant ?

  • -1

What I'm saying is that under 7,500 an LCD will provide noticeably better quality. Did you miss that point?

Ie spend 5k on a projector and you begin to match the picture quality. Spend 20k and you exceed the quality. What if your 5k coffee machine produced worse coffee than instant. Would it not be wise to just get instant, and forget the ego?

You can get Chinese knockoff projectors for $300, but it may turn out similar to the Aldi one (or worse) - bad picture and noisy!

I have an LED projector (LG PA75U) and is quite good. But it is not very bright (800 lumens), works fine during night.
LG Electronics PA75U Slim LED Projector with WXGA Resolution WiDi and Smart TV (2013 Model)
    http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-PA75U-Projector-Resolut…

I would suggest you have a look at these. These are some decent projectors which you can get for under $1K:

LG Electronics PF85U Full HD LED Projector with Smart TV and Built-In Digital TV Tuner
    http://www.amazon.com/LG-Electronics-PF85U-Projector-Built-I…

Optoma ML1000P WXGA 1000 Lumen 3D Ready Portable DLP LED Projector with HDMI
    http://www.amazon.com/Optoma-ML1000P-Lumen-Portable-Projecto…

There are no LED projectors with zoom lens. So you have to adjust where you place the projector. Biggest advantage for LED would be bulb life (20,000+ hrs), compactness (portable), less noisy (fan) and instant on/off. But the max brightness would be 1000 lumens.

    Non-LED projectors:
Optoma HD141X Full 3D 1080p 3000 Lumen DLP Home Theater Projector with MHL Enabled HDMI Port
    http://www.amazon.com/Optoma-HD141X-Theater-Projector-Enable…

    BenQ W1070 1080P 3D Home Theater Projector
    http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-W1070-1080P-Theater-Projector/dp/…

I think probably Optoma HD141X would suit anyone who wants a decent "value for money" projector. Btw, if you buy from Amazon, there would be a big sale on Black Friday (Nov 28th).

Often projecting to a smooth wall is better than cheap screens. But if you have money, this is the best screen:
