acm.org MSDNAA Student Offer revised (re Windows 7)

Dear Students,

Because of the recent concerns that non-technical students were taking advantage of the ACM’s MSDN AA memberships, Microsoft has decided to discontinue the availability of all Windows 7 products through the this particular subscription. I have been in contact with Microsoft on almost a daily basis and I know it was a hard debate and decision for them to make given the fact that many true computer students are ACM members who would like to take advantage of this offer.

However, I have two concrete recommendations for you …

First, if you are a technical student … go to the MSDN AA web site and see if your school or department is an MSDN AA member.

· If they are, contact your department directly to get access.

· If they are not, ask a faculty member in your department to get a subscription here.

Because schools have a more stringent verification process in place, Windows 7 is still being made available through STEM departments.

Second, if you are a general student … I have been assured by Microsoft that they are looking at ways to get Windows 7 to you at a very affordable price. My advice is to stayed tuned.

While this may be a bit of a near–term disappointment for you (it is for us), you can be assured that as an organizations, we will continue to look at ways in which we can provide you value to your membership and the we will explore options with Microsoft on an ongoing basis.

  • Guess someone wants to plug a hole in their revenue stream

  • I (engineering student) signed up for the sole purpose of Windows 7… Now it is removed (after I've paid). Is that fair?

    Meanwhile, Microsoft is offering Windows 7 for $29USD to Students;

  • +1

Ouch. Glad I didn't sign up for it.
$29 USD? Hopefully we get a similar price (though unlikely - even with the strong AUD, it'll probably still end up $99 for no apparent reason).

    • No doubt ay. They better offer it to us at a comparable price like $39.99 or even $29.99. It's ridiculous how much more we pay for stuff here, they get it so much better in the US.

  • You can still obtain Windows 7 for the US$29 even if your not a student by signing up for free .edu email account at http://www.australia.edu (theres plenty of other free .edu sites out there too). Verfied that the Win741 site accepts these email addresses.

    • Better read through the EULA first. You may not be be able to activate these copies in Australia.

    • Richie83….have you tested to see if it accepts Australian credit cards from an Australian IP address?

      • There is no point in buying from there anyway, the same offer will be available to Australian students on October 22nd. It looks like it will be AUD$29 too going by the fact that it is USD$29, EUR$29, GBP$29 etc. in the relevant countries.

        • Ok, that certainly sounds easier …. that said Australia did miss out on the "early bird" promotion a few months back whilst the US, UK and parts of the EU were included!
