Free Upgrade to Platinum Debit Card @ Commbank (Requirements May Apply?)

52

For existing Commbank customers with a debit mastercard, you can upgrade to a platinum version of the card for free, with no monthly/annual fees. The benefits are covered by Zurich, so same T&C as the Citibank Platinum.

  • Exclusive Platinum benefits at no extra cost
  • Concierge service
  • Purchase security
  • Guaranteed pricing
  • Extended warranty

It's not as good as the citibank credit card (no reward system), but for those who aren't eligible for it (students), or dont want a credit card, this free debit card seems like a good option.

The requirement (from the Online Chat person) is that you need a total of $25k in your accounts with Commbank, and you have to call up to request the upgrade. When I called up, they did say they didn't want to offer it to everyone so if it gets OzB rushed, applications may get rejected even if you have the $25k balance.

edit: From the comments, there doesnt seem to be any requirements. It seems hit and miss, so you'll have to try your luck

lol at the good for students bit.

The number of students who have a lazy $25k balance would be very small.

      • Well its free so there's no downside.

    • Hang on, what's the reason we need $25k with CBA?

EDIT: oh right, just scrolled down.

Looks like you can't just apply for it

"Mercy: Sure, I can confirm that you are not able to upgrade to the platinum debit mastercard, they are offered to customers or you must relationship balance of $250K to be eligible for one"

    • Well.. that's weird. I had an online chat to them earlier this morning;

Pamela: I can confirm that you will need to have over the amount of $25 000 for you to be eligible for a platinum debit card.

      Maybe she missed a zero

      • I think so, I asked twice she said $250,000 and confirmed it

I am an unemployed full time student, with around $50 in the bank and I got a free upgrade to platinum… I wish I had 25k or 250k in my account, but I've never had any amount near that. If I did I'd probably spend it all in a day! Haha

    • Good find.
I guess it's pot luck then

I just received my Platinum Debit Card in the mail. I didn't request it. I guess they see me as a valuable customer since I've had an account with CBA from a young age. Dollarmites FTW!

They send me Platinum without having no more than 3k on my account. So I don't think its 25k issue.

  • Called through and was told this was an older promotion that is no longer offered.
    ..
Maybe that's just their nice way of letting me down :(

    • Thats definitely a lie. I called through 2 hours ago and they put my application through

      • Haha .. maybe it was the operator I got.
Never mind .. Good for you though and thanks for posting!

upvoting (because it's great for the people who can get it - worth trying)

    • I just called now and put my application through as well… maybe it is the operator. I told her I saw the promotion on the website and she found it

Who keeps $25k in their CBA account? Their interest rates are quite poor.

Bankwest has a platinum debit too… highly doubt u need to have 250k… these "platinum" services are available to every man and his dog these days

I've had my Bankwest platinum debit for over 12 months and I think I've only ever used the features of it once or twice. I press Savings wherever possible for purchases, the only time I push credit is if I am buying something of value and want the extra warranty. Never had to claim it though.

I really don't even need to have it, but I just got one because they said I was eligible for it.

hi bonezAU, why don't you just push credit everytime? It doesn't cost us any more and it takes the money from your savings anyway.

The shop has to pay more though. For smaller shops that I want to support I usually go through savings/eftpos. Bigger shops/purchases get the credit treatment.

        • This reason pretty much. I see no need to push credit when it is going to cost the retailer more, regardless of how small or large they are. Just an old habit of mine. The other bonus is it shows up immediately in Internet Banking, rather than saying "AUTHORISATION ONLY" for a few days until the merchant settles.

  • got one sent to me today. didn't request it at all…

  • I received one in the mail half a year ago (didn't request, nowhere near $25k in my Commbank accounts), but I have never used any of the "platinum" features. According to posts around the web, most of the benefits like guaranteed pricing are a hassle to claim. The card looks much nicer though!

  • I just tried the online chat and the man told me that its only a trial at the moment and that I need $250,000. I'll try ringing tomorrow and see where I get with that.

  • They started sending these ages ago as targeted offers. Some got lucky and got one when they asked for one early on when staff didn't know about this. The requirement is 250k if you want to apply.

I called them already and got rejected on the spot. The telephonist said the deal is not public and only a few number customers were invited randomly each month.

  • Just called them, they said I have to have a home loan or certain amount in my saving account or certain amount in another bank and willing to move to CBA. I asked for how much they want me to move they said minimum 250K. CBA sucks.

    • Call them out on the bull. It's advertised on their site.
Anyone with an existing debit mastercard can get an upgrade

      • Hi cpho, where did you see this?

  • What's this 25k or mortgage business? I've got one and I'm a full-on plebeian.
