Re-Selling a Digital Download Game - Is It Legal?

Hi All,

Wondering if this is legal?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/FIFA-15-PS4-Game-Digital-download…

This way they only pay for the game once and then get multiple people to download it? Is this allowed?

Cheers

  • I doubt selling a psn account is legal. And it sounds like it was purchased on a stolen credit card..

They aren't selling the psn account. They're getting you to log into their account, downloading the game, then logging out. So the game is downloaded to your ps4 via under their account, not yours.

Yes, sounds very dodgy/illegal. It's a pretty good loop hole if it works though.

My usual go to response for anything regarding legal issues are "If you have to ask? It's probably not legal…"

Also, sharing a PSN account with people you don't know is at best dodgy as all hell.

    From the official blog:

Game sharing is a violation of the terms of service of the PSN and your account can be temporarily banned and/or suspended and with multiple infractions you could become permanently banned and lose access to all online progress and more importantly, all the money you spent to buy those games would be rendered useless. Consider for a second that your mother or father paid for those games. You just sent all of that money down the drain.

Even if your account isn't banned, you'll surely lose access to the game you paid for.

  • It's possible but against their TOS. I'd also hazard a guess that you could lose the game at any time too, if they're sharing the same account around multiple times, as the next purchaser would be making their console the "primary" one (voiding your's).

If you share games like this you do so at your own risk.

  • If you are selling:

    Game/Subscription accounts
Individual games from non-DRM sites (like GOG and GMG)
The 'rights' to download something that you yourself don't actually own

Is all incredibly illegal. In fact you're not supposed to even share any of the above. Digital is a tricky medium.

  • The same can be done with iOS (and Android) devices to log in with another account with previous paid purchase and download onto device not previously paid, they will not be able to receive future updates however. Does the same apply to PSN?

    • it used to be very popular but Sony changed how it works and now it's basically not worth doing. It used to be 10 consoles per account, but now it's capped at 2 and it counts PS3, PS4 & Vita when it used to only be PS3. So unless you know you don't need access from 2 separate devices and you trust whoever you want to share with then it's not practical.
(I'm speaking from experience on PS3, may be different on PS4)

  • I'm pretty sure it only works for 2 consoles per account, so this isn't some huge scheme.
It is quite dodgey though since like dktlim said you need access to the account for the registration to stay active and you're not guaranteed to have that. You might be able to hijack the account, but either way only 1 real person gets to have complete access.
