There has been so many chromecast sales at $39, that dicksmith should really just change the RRP to $39

    • I know. I felt dirty posting it given my relationship with DSE currently but its on behalf of a friend so i did.

  • +5

Surely everyone who wants to buy chromecast has already bought it at $39?

    • So you can never have too many?

I got one of these in a previous deal. TBH it's a bit shit, $39 wasted.

You can only stream what's in your chrome browser, not files already saved down on your device. I find if I'm streaming data from the internet there seems very little of my wireless data left to stream to the TV.

Audio was horribly out of sync, and anything with a definition worthy of streaming to a TV would freeze up after a minute or so.

    • Mine streams video beautifully. And my internet tops out at 350kbps.

    • I agree the Chromecast is not great (an AppleTV is better in my opinion), but it is cheap (so you get what you pay for).

You can stream files saved to your device though. Once you are connected to your Chromecast, you just press the cast button and it should connect. When I can get my Chromecast to work, the things I stream are stored locally.

      • Thanks for the replies, maybe it's me, maybe I got a faulty device. I'll give it another go, but I thought the cast button only appears in the chrome browser, I can't see how I could stream a movie saved on my hard drive. I tried copy/paste file path to the browser, but all I got was choppy out of sync playback on the TV (it played fine on the laptop). Maybe the file types weren't compatible, I'd have to check

        • +1

Try plex or similar on your PC. It will transcode unsupported formats on the fly if necessary.

        • Chromecast is actually a pretty open platform, you just need to search around a bit for what you want it to do.
If you want to play your local media easily, there is a great chrome extension called Videostream that runs in your browser, allows you to choose your local media and stream it directly to chromecast without any hassles.

Not sure if I can post links here so just google Videostream.

If twitch is your thing, check out NightDev, which allows twitch streaming and is extremely easy to use.

If you really want to get the most of your chromecast I suggest setting up a plex server. Allows you to search all your media with beautiful artwork and blurbs, and allows you to watch your home media anywhere with an internet connection (just watch out if your ISP counts your uploads towards your download limit)

I personally have a dedicated server with plex and Subsonic (music equivalent of plex), and although it was the cheapest component, the chromecast is by far the best value item in my setup. There are many people developing for it, so if you find a service that doesnt have native chromecast support there may very well be a third party app if you do a bit of googling.

    • I can stream almost any format from my Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet to my chromecast via a FREE app called BubbleUPNP that you can get from the Google Play store. For some file types, you might need to buy the full version app.

    • +1

Both of my Chromecasts work perfectly with no lag 99.9% of the time.

I'd put your issues down to a poor WiFi network.

I love the hand off feature so that your device doesn't have to be playing and relaying the content its self. To me that puts it way ahead of the Apple TV.

    • Wireless data, huh? Sounds almost like you're using a 3g modem? If so, that's a big source of your issues. The others you mention require a minor amount of research to resolve.

It's not a device my mum would be able to use productively, and it's also not something I'd bother with given my NAS + plex + roku solution, but it has a valid place in the market.

      • +1

Sorry, should have said wireless bandwidth, not data.

    • I don't know what you may be doing wrong, but my Chromecast is perfect. I also have an Apple TV and a Smart Bluray player, neither of which I've used much since getting the Chromecast. Plays Netflix, Hulu, catchup TV services via laptop and also plays local media via PLEX. Works equally well with my laptop, Iphone 5 and Ipad.

      • I take it you've changed your DNS entries direct in your router to do this (from memory the Chromecast has hardcoded DNS to Google that can't be changed)? I've got DNS changes at device level at home (ie. WDTV Live etc).

I wanted to keep my PC and a few other items with standard DNS settings for Oz. Is there any disadvantage to changing this at router level?

        • +1

Yes, DNS changed in router (A Netgear) to Unotelly. Only affects o.s. services like Netflix, Hulu etc. Has no effect on local sites, so no problem. Haven't noticed any slowing down at all.

        • @samcro:

          Thanks for the note.

    • Yup, better to save the 39 for that Nexus Player and get it for 99 ish on sale.

    • I don't have any of the freezing or OOS issues you've reported, but the native codec support (lack thereof) for Chromecast really pisses me off…having to rely on Plex transcoding is a PITA.

    • No problems here - works excellently with google play music and movies, and i've casted 1080p movies stored on my tablet with no difficulty either (if the file format is right). Screen mirroring from the nexus 7 allows me to watch abc iview, and being able to show people photos, youtube, webpages anytime we're discussing things is really convenient.

I really don't see the need for the nexus player to re-introduce the remote control interface and be like an apple tv. The chromecast seems like a far more elegant solution.

      • have you tried screen mirroring from tenplay app? The video freezes when I trie it just wondering if it is my nexus 10 or the app.

    • +1

For android, give Allcast a try. Works great for me.

Chromecast 2 is coming soon (with 5GHz support). The current Chromecast is only 2.4GHz so if you run a dual band network, you can run into some problems,

My Chromecast does not work properly on my network as a result. Google support said it is a known limitation and could only suggest turning off my 5GHz network in order for Chromecast to work properly.

    • +2

Wait… how does having 5ghz turned on affect 2.4ghz? They're different frequencies

      • +3

That's right. So if the device you are connected to is on the 5GHz frequency, it is invisible to the Chromcast. You need to force the streaming device to join the 2.4GHz frequency (and it then becomes visible to the Chromecast).

Unfortunately I am streaming from an iPad which automatically joins the 'best' network it can find (which is usually my 5GHz frequency). If I disable my 5GHz network, it all works fine (as my iPad then joins the 2.4GHz network) but it is a pain to have to disable the network each time I want to use my Chromcast.

Google support where good at helping me troubleshoot though, but they did suggest I upgrade to Chromecast 2 when it is released.

        • So you're saying that when your iPad is connected on the 5ghz wifi, it can't stream to the chromecast that's on the 2.4ghz wifi? If they're both on the same network, it should work. Such as a laptop connected via a physical LAN cable would still be able to stream to the chromecast.

My phone on 5ghz can stream to the chromecast perfectly. I'd say it's an issue with your network setup.

        • It does not work with an Airport Extreme (which manages my network). Google has a list on their Chromecast page which outlines which routers it is compatible with and it does not support the Airport Extreme unless it is only running on 2.4GHz.

This is from the Chromcast support page "2.4 GHz Network support only: Chromecast only displays 2.4GHz networks as Wi-Fi options in the setup app. 5GHz networks are not compatible with Chromecast and will not be listed. Please double check that your router supports a 2.4 GHz network. If you are using a dual band router, please ensure that you are connecting to the 2.4 GHz network."

Google did suggest a hack for me, but it was too complicated for me to implement as it required port forwarding and adjusting my DNS.

        • @changa: I think there's an option in AE to specify a different name for your 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network. Then you could force Chromecast to use a specific band.
I run a dualband AE with the same name and don't have any issues with CC

        • You don't have issues with your Chromecast on an AE. That is interesting. My Chromecast will not work unless I disable my 5GHz network (and Google tell me it would not work with an AE if I am running dual band).

Are you casting from an iPad or your Mac?

I can cast from my Mac (as it connected via ethernet), but my iPad and iPhone will not cast unless they are on the 2.4GHz network.

I know I can alter the name of my 5GHz network, but then I lose the ability for my iPad/iPhone to jump between the 2.4GHz or 5GHz network (depending on what is the best network at the time or where I am in my house). The 2.4GHz network has better reach for me, so it's better when I am upstairs.

        • @changa:

If Chromecast doesn't support 5GHz then it won't give a shit if you have it turned on or not because it will only see the 2.4GHz network. You might be giving Google too much credit with regard to their hiring and training programmes for tech support.

        • That's not what I said. Re-read my posts again.

My devices are on a 5GHz network, and as a result Chromecast cannot see them (as it is on a 2.4GHz network) so I am unable to preform a cast. In order for a cast to work properly I need to turn off my 5GHz network so my devices connect to a 2.4GHz network.

        • @changa:

Is your 5GHz network not connected to your 2.4GHz network? Your devices don't communicate directly on a wireless network (unless it's ad hoc), everything talks through the AP.

        • @whitty:

My 5GHz network is connected to my 2.4GHz network (it is an Airport Extreme with both networks named the same thing). All my Apple products can communicate across the network (ie. 2.4GHz devices can see 5GHz devices), but my Chromecast will not see any device which is on the 5GHz network.

I thought it would not be a problem (hence why I bought the Chromecast), but it does not work for me. That's why I called Google support and they told me that the Chromecast does not work on a 5GHz network (as per this in their support page "2.4 GHz Network support only: Chromecast only displays 2.4GHz networks as Wi-Fi options in the setup app. 5GHz networks are not compatible with Chromecast and will not be listed. Please double check that your router supports a 2.4 GHz network. If you are using a dual band router, please ensure that you are connecting to the 2.4 GHz network."

However if I turn off my 5GHz network, everything works. I am not running in ad-hoc mode (but my Airport Extreme is running in Bridge Mode). I am on the Optus Network (cable modem) and the cable modem has to act as the DHCP server (hence my Airport Extreme operates in Bridge Mode).

If I am doing something wrong I would love to know what as I would like my Chromecast to work, but the Google support people could not assist. I figured I was just going to stick with my AppleTV and wait for Chromecast 2.

Any help appreciated (and I did not mean to de-rail this thread and turn it into a support thread).

        • @changa: I've only been casting from android phones, haven't tried from ipad/iphone. Maybe for whatever reason my device is preferring the 2.4Ghz so it works and yours seems to prefer the 5Ghz?

    • I have a netgear ac1900, my devices are connected to the 5ghz and my two Chromecast to the 2.4ghz and they stream and work fine.

    • where did you get the 5GHz support note from http://www.engadget.com/2014/10/16/google-chromecast-fcc-h2g… indicates they were told no noticeable changes were being made .. 5GHz would be a noticeable feature.

  • My CC gets pretty hot, might get another one as a backup

    • phew, glad I'm not the only one.

Why are you checking out this page then?

    • Sorry to be annoyed to you, but I personally finding this Chromecast deal extremely annoying especially when it went over 100+ votes and yet I still cannot find the benefit of having one.

It is not whether I am Apple fan or not, but realistically speaking, Apple so far never fails me, well, except the price LOL.

  • My car's 7" screen has HDMI and USB connection just wondering if i could stream contents from my phone without having WIFI connection??

    • nope, streams via network

    • +1

You should be able to get a microusb (or whatever your phone uses) —> HDMI cable to connect to your car tv. Not sure if you can mirror it though. It might also be too fiddly to do in the car.

    • +1

You may be able configure an 'ad-hoc', Wi-Fi Direct or use a travel router (e.g. TP-Link MR3020) to setup an in car network to avoid using mobile data. This link suggests it is possible.

      • Thanks for the link! Very helpful, I might give it a try :)

    • I bought a cheap ebay miracast A2W device prior to a ChromeCast thinking it was the same thing - it kind of isn't. But one thing it does is make it's own ad-hoc wifi which you connect to from your device to stream media to it .. it then jumps on your wifi to get things like youTube. I didn't like that I had to connect to its wifi as a source to use it .. but in your car playing locally off of the device I would think it would suit your needs. This looks like it http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Measy-A2W-Miracast-TV-AirPlay-Don…

  • +1

Is there any advantage to a Chromecast, compared to a Miracast device?

As far as I can tell, Miracast works with a wider range of apps, works with more operating systems (Android, IOS 6.0 and higher, Windows XP/7/8 and higher).

Miracast is also cheaper - AU$22.71 delivered (from China), normal price, here:
    http://www.buyincoins.com/item/39984.html

Does anyone here have experience with both Miracast and Chromecast? If so, please comment.

    • +2

You can think of Miracast as a wireless HDMI connection between your device to your TV. Chromecast, on the other hand, works similar to Miracast but additionaly allows you to hand-off a web URL and have the video stream directly to your TV without your device being on the whole time.

In terms of Audio, the equivalent would be to consider Miracast as a bluetooth speaker while Chromecast being Sonos speakers.

      • Thanks for the reply, you have confirmed that Miracast has the features I want.

I didn't know about the "hand-off" feature, but it's a feature I can do without, for the price difference.

    • Sorry, experience with neither, but thanks for the link. For that price I might even give it a go. For my needs that dongle and Chromecast look to be almost equivalent. On my Android phone, Yatse and BubbleUpnp stream to both Chromecast and DLNA, which this dongle claims to support. Plex only streams to Chromecast though. Personally, I can do without Plex support. The Miracast dongle seems to claim some Chromecast compatibility as well. Hard to tell from their wording and I wouldn't totally trust that claim anyway.

      • There are cheaper ones available too, e.g. AU$20.44:
        http://www.buyincoins.com/item/41454.html

One advantage that Chromecast has: currently only one model. No worrying about which model is better.

        • I bought the first one you linked to. That one has the (possible) Chromecast emulation. The cheaper one doesn't seem to. It's always a lottery though when you buy cheap Chinese stuff. I'll know in a few weeks. Gambling on the price of a couple of kebabs anyway.

  • Can you stream video from a nas.
I have a chromecast and cant seem to get the file's to play. I can select them but fails to play? They are avi.

    • Do you have Plex? That's how I stream my files :)

      • I have plex but cant get plex to browse to nas it will only browse to local folders.

Is there any point calling a $39 chromecast a good deal anymore? I'm seeing 3 deals a week for them at this price fopr the last month.

Is there a difference with Eneloop deals? Or dick smith deals full stop? Its still a deal.
