  • Never heard of the brand but boy that's cheap.

    • tandy is dicksmith's brand i think

      • Thanks, I guess the 16G is worth a try then.

Actually, the 32G with BDAY is way better.

      Some light reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tandy_(Australia) :)

Not owned by DS, but both were owned by Woolworths at one point.

EDIT: jtsback beat me to it haha

    • +5

you have seriously never heard of tandy??

before they were a retail store and Dick Smith's main competitor throughout the 90s, they were one of the first major personal computer manufacturers.

the brand has long since been made defunct and is now being used as a cynical marketing brand (much like akai, sansui, telefunken, and various other such brands).

      • +1

        when it comes to technology

past performance is not an idicator of future relaibility

        Technology moves with the times

        good example

        Kingston makes decent ram

But their first gen SSDs were shite

        • +1

true, but at least its the same 'kingston' that made both products.

the company that made your akai DJ mixer in the 1980s is not the same company who makes anything to do with the akai brand now. akai went into liquidation in quite unceremonious circumstances in the late 1990s and the brand name was one of the many things sold off in the race to recover the company's debts.

by the same token, the tandy that made the TRS-80 bears no resemblance or link to the mongolian sweatshop that is manufacturing these otherwise brand-less microSD cards with reckless abandon.

i'm perhaps reading into this all a bit too much for the sake of a free microSD card :p

For those who wish to know more about Tandy

I recommend getting the 32GB model if you have the BDAY voucher. Brings it down to $7 which is great buying! Good for cameras and mobile phone storage!

    • +1

Ha, pulled the trigger and got one.

    • +2

Hmmm…yes…the 16GB comes up as free with the code?

      • Yep!

      • lol, wth…I just made another order for the 16G anyway.

  • Thanks got 16gb one for 100% free with the voucher

edit: much better than paying $2 for that little mini speaker that nobody 'really' needed.

  • +9

16GB is FREE with the "BDAY"code!!

    • Great! It was free for me too!

    • "BDAY" didn't work for me. I received Coupon conditions have not been met.

      • Try logging in.

  • +2

They should do a Tandy SD Card of the Month.. akin to the battery of the month…

Quite sad to see the once almighty brand of Tandy being worthless.. They were the Jaycar of the day… anything and everything electronics they had covered..

    • +1

The #1 store for batteries at the time.

Now anyone and their dog are selling eneloops :P

  • Just signed up and bought the 16gb for $4.98. This was the first purchase that unlocked the $10 credit.

I then bought the 32gb for $4.98. Two cards for less than $10. Thanks OP.

  • Awesome, 16GB for free!

Then checked out again with the 32GB for $6.98.

Both cards for $6.98 in two transactions.

In one transaction it will be $11.98, so do 2.

    • I think you can use the code 3 times only per account. So, you used 2 vs 1 times but worked out cheaper for the 2 cards.

      • Ah, I see, yeah, not too bad at all when used like that. Good deal!

  • Where do I put the BDAY code? I went through the whole checkout and couldn't see it :(

    • there's a "have a coupon code" in blue writing on the right above the prices

    • There is a "Have a coupon code" popup link in blue next to your order info in cart. Click on it to enter code.

  • thanks OP

  • +1

The code works multiple times, happy ordering many if you want :P

    • I wonder if they'll honour all the free ones lol

    • +1

      Only worked twice

  • Ordered both 16GB & 32GB! woot, thanks.

  • BDAY Not working for me :(
The amount stays the same. Any pointers?

    • Did you log in first? It's only for existing members

    • are you an existing member?

    • login to account first!

  • Thanks bud got me one :) Love how you don't even have to enter cc details

  • what is the birthday code?

  • +1

Try logging in if the coupon doesn't work, as it appears to use your non-existent account credit for the purchase lol!

  • BDAY

  • Getting error "Coupon conditions have not been met"
    :-(

  • no more stock for 16gb

  • Awesome, picked up a 32gb for 6.98 and two free 16gb.

64GB for 6.98 I'm not complaining, thanks op and COTD

  • The 16GB is gone now.
Still getting "Coupon conditions have not been met" for the 32GB

  • This is a SPECIAL ORDER and will take 2-4 weeks to Dispatch. You will receive a further email on Dispatch with a tracking number.

    • No. "Special Order - Dispatch in 5 - 7 days"

  • 16gb sold out. I got the 32gb to throw into my Raspberry Pi or GoPro. Thanks

  • 32GB for $7 with coupon is an excellent deal.

  • Thanks op

  • 16GB sold out, ordered 32GB.

  • Flipper. I did have an account with them, but its been so long since i used I guess its gone, and the hotmail account long since deleted. 16gb for $5 is still pretty good

edit: spoke too soon. $10 credit from signup just took a little while to hit home, but I got the 32gb as well. Cheers!

Grabbed one to go in a dash cam yay

    • If you've just got the gearbest dashcam DONT BUY THIS, it's class 10 and won't work in the unit.

      • You may want to be more specific on which dash cam…

I got the A118 dash cam from gearbest and my Samsung EVO 32gb class 10 works no problems =)

I bought this 32gb Tandy one for my secondary A118 that I'll be grabbing soon.

Btw, thanks OP! Managed to grab a deal before it was sold out =D

      • Hope thats not true as that is exactly what I grabbed it for.

      • I'm curious as to what exactly you mean. I've been using Class 10 cards in a 1080p Dashcam for quite a while without issue.

        • +1

Just in this particular model of Gearbest cam, which is a budget/value model, class 10 cards have been recorded to have many issues with bugs and re-recording, is has been noted on several reviews on Youtube and in the main deal thread for the product by an Ozbargain user. Better to use and older micro sd with just this model of dash-cam, other more upper end dash-cams I would except fully support class 10 with no issues. Note I'm referring to the G1W-C from GB Only.

        • @Davo93:

Cool cool. Thanks for the clarification. My A118 was from a non-Gearbest seller too.

  • accidently forgot to put in code. Talked to them on live chat and they fixed it up.

  • Does that logo look like a condom to anyone? Gives new meaning to catch of the day lol

    • Lol now I see it, maybe it's subtlety hinting that you'll be fkd over by them sooner or later haha

  • Both seem sold out

  • Looks like I got in just in time.. got the 32Gb for $6.98 about 5 mins ago.

  • +1

Would they be suitable for these Nokia Lumia 530 phones (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/167094)? In terms of lag etc.

    edit: too late, anyway. :(

  • Thanks op. needed a 32gb micro sd so got one with this great deal.

  • Just got an email around 1pm advising me that my order has been shipped for the 32GB card (the one I paid for). But no mention of the free 16GB being shipped out.

I hope this doesn't mean they'll cancel all the free ones lol

    • The $2 eneloop was dispatched but free 16GB MircoSD was still processing.

      A little bit worried.

  • +1

Wonder if it would fit my old trs80 coco2 :)

  • montorola

Just got an email around 1pm advising me that my order has been shipped for the 32GB card (the one I paid for). But no mention of the free 16GB being shipped out.

Same for me, and my 32GB card arrived by AAE/Fastrack this morning. They sent the card and adaptor in a ~4cm plastic case in an almost A4 sized padded bag. Seemed like overkill.

  • Just got a shipped email for the 16GB card.

  • Got a slip at my apartment's mailbox with attempted delivery advice. I thought it would be a small package… how wrong I was

    • That doesn't mean it's big. It means they need a signature most likely.

  • Thanks OP! I just received my 32GB card and ran a test using h2testw 1.4 here are the results.

Warning: Only 30210 of 30211 MByte tested.
    Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
    Writing speed: 13.8 MByte/s
    Reading speed: 20.1 MByte/s
    H2testw v1.4

    • Half decent speed for a cheapy and positive test. I'll definitely be checking mine.

Had an attempted delivery today for these and some Eneloops in the same birthday sales.

      • +1

        My result:

Warning: Only 30210 of 30211 MByte tested.
        Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
        Writing speed: 15.0 MByte/s
        Reading speed: 28.0 MByte/s
        H2testw v1.4

So pretty good speed really for $7.

        • +1

why am i getting significantly faster read speeds than you guys? having an SSD for OS shouldn't make a diff…

using a 32kb allocation unit (which is what the card came with):

Warning: Only 30210 of 30211 MByte tested.
          Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
          Writing speed: 15.7 MByte/s
          Reading speed: 68.8 MByte/s
          H2testw v1.4

using a 16kb allocation unit (which is the default for upto 32gb):

Warning: Only 30202 of 30203 MByte tested.
          Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
          Writing speed: 15.8 MByte/s
          Reading speed: 73.3 MByte/s
          H2testw v1.4

          using a 64kb allocation unit:

Warning: Only 30214 of 30215 MByte tested.
          Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
          Writing speed: 15.6 MByte/s
          Reading speed: 69.2 MByte/s
          H2testw v1.4

        • @CVonV: I too am using a SSD for the OS & I used the built-in card reader in my laptop to do the test.

        • @CVonV:
At first I thought ~70MB/s was not real. I do know that the drivers used can make a significant difference to card read speeds. I think I upgrade from the default Dell ones at some point on this controller (a JMicron)

My testing was done on a 3 year old i7 Sandy Bridge laptop (with an SSD - but you're right that should make no difference) and its built in card reader. I used the default format that came on the card (FAT32 with 32kB allocation units).

I just threw my card back in. It still had the files from h2testw on it so I just did a verify. It started at about 60MB/s and fairly quickly dropped slightly to about 58MB/s and then at about 80% through was down to 53MB/s and by the end it was 50MB/s. CPU usage was low (around <5% or 20% of one core).

          Time: 10m07s

Warning: Only 30210 of 30211 MByte tested.
          Test finished without errors.
          Reading speed: 49.8 MByte/s
          H2testw v1.4

So not sure why a repeat read is nearly double the speed.

        • @chadiwrx:

yeah mine was using my laptop's built-in card reader too

          @Shonky:

well I am on a relatively fresh format (just over a month) on a 3 year old i7-2630QM using HP's latest (3 year old) Realtek card reader drivers..

on each of those tests I did a quick format in windows 7 explorer first

  • Got the Tandy 32GB Class 10 today.
