In my opinion, the best canned tuna on the market. Sale starts Wednesday.

A really interesting read on the history of this famous brand here.

The ALDI imitation Sirena (Ocean Rise) is just as good I reckon and always $2.

    • +12

Nothing can beat the Sirena product, worth paying that little bit extra if you must!

    • The Aldi ones are good. Much better than the John West shreded stuff that they have on sale every other week (95g@$1).

But I will probably stock up on some Sirena ones this week though.

      • I think that the Ocean Rise tuna is rebagged Sirena Tuna.

The can is really similar except for the name.

        • It's ok but it squeaks when i eat it. Weird indeed.

      • With the John West, get the Olive Oil one to get chunked tuna, its the flavoured stuff that is shredded.

        • The John West chunks is still pretty crappy compared to Sirena and Aldi. It also only has around 60% tuna compared to 74% in Sirena and Aldi cans.

  • It's not as good

In the light of this shocking video released by Greenpeace on John West and Princes fishing practises:
    https://secure.greenpeace.org.uk/page/speakout/dirty-tuna?js…

I'm boycotting all JohnWest and Princes products and this could be an alternative brand to consider. Anyone knows if they use FADs? Their website claims 60% of their product range
contains pole and line caught fish:

    Johnwest is rubbish anyway

    • +1

Yep, I stopped buying johnwest after I bought a so called chunk tuna in olive oil that was half oil and half tuna, closer to 40g of tuna rather than 90. Stingy.

      • I am glad it was not me.

Seems like John West tuna is all liquid. The flavored Tuna's are all wet too

        Yuck!

I buy Woolies Select brand on special for $1.

  • Thanks TA :-)

  • The Select Tuna with olive oil is really good. Prefer it over all brands. Also protein content is higher than most other brands

  • ever tried sardines?

    • fresh are tasty. canned are yuk

      • +1

        canned are yuk

        yep…

      • +1

A lot lower than mercury, and much more sustainable too.

        • Sorry, much less mercury I meant to say. In sardines as opposed to tuna.

So I just bought some at coles tonight - 2 for $3, so this deal is actually more expensive per can than last weeks deal.

    • 185g as well?

    • +3

Hi Helenn. I believe you bought 2x 90g tins for $3. These are 185g tins :)

      • +2

Oh that makes sense ta :)

  • -1

    No this is 185g

  • Will not touch any other tuna but Sirena. Have tried them and it turns me off them. The oil one and chilli are the best.

Will not touch any other tuna but Sirena.

      Does Venus get jealous ?

This is my favorite brand of Tuna. Thanks!

My recommendation - add a can of Sirena Tuna to a bowl of Nissin Noodle and add Fried Egg

It's so simple to make this homemade Japanese Ramen!

    P.S. Don't overcook the noodle :)

      boiled egg is healthier.

    • Artificial pork flavour?? Not sure about that..

The one with beans is like sex on a plate

  • What's their expiry date usually? I had a look recently and couldn't find a date anywhere on the can. I asked a coles staff member, but they didn't know either.

  • i've never ever checked a canned products expiry date while at the supermarket.

    • +2

I bought about 40 of these cans last time these were on sale at this price (around 18 months ago I think) and I still have a few cans left and they taste fine.

  • Does anyone else find the tuna in these larger cans to be a bit dry? I find because it's packed in pretty tight, the oil tends to sit on the top. Seems to be less of an issue with the smaller cans.

    • +2

I stab the tuna with my spoon 4-6 times to let the oil seep in. Moist, oily tuna :D

  • Some IGAs sell the Sole Mare 185g tunas for $2.55. Preferrable since it uses Olive Oil. Sirena uses a Sunflower + Olive Oil blend. Still, $2 is a good price for Sirena. Either being premium chunk tuna.

    • unlike sirena and sole mare, moro and condor use evoo - all four are conga foods brands :)

  • You don't see it often, but honestly the best tinned tuna is 'consorccio' brand. Its worth the extra coin.
I stock up on the Sirena brand when I can't find the Consorcio.

What's the go with the mercury content in these 185g tins? Safe to knock back two a day for lunch five days a week? Surprised there's no warnings on mercury content if it is indeed a real risk. Can't find any information on the content per 100g.

    • I would say that's excessive… If you're trying to bulk use protein powder. It's cheaper and without the heavy metals and overfishing issues.

      • Can't Find a more convenient high protein no carb source of food at such value. Just wondering if I will soon experience mercury induced delerium as a result. I try to avoid large fish outside of having these at work for lunch.

  • When does it start? Still $3.90 at my local Coles.

      2moro as per post

      • Thanks gimme.

  • hahaha Tottenham_hs, thought this post would tweak ur interest.

  • Hi TA how did you find this deal? I checked the catalogue online for my area for next week and couldn't see it in there? Unless they vary by State?

    • +1

Sirena 185g cans are 3 for $8 in the TAS catalogue (p18). NOT AS GOOD AS $2/CAN!

  • +2

I love Sirena tuna and used to eat a truckload of it. However, am disappointed that their cans are not BPA free. I did try to email them on when their tins will become BPA free but no response as yet. Safcol, Greenseas, IGA and Fish 4 Ever according to Jun-12 website (http://www.sarahwilson.com/2012/06/which-tinned-tuna-should-…) are BPA free whilst Sirena is on the BPA list.

Yellow fin is the only tuna I eat (does that make me a jerk?). Skipjack tastes like it should only be eaten by cats.

  • Doesnt appear to be a good deal in Brisbane. 3 for $8 in Brisbane.

  • No deal in west Perth stores, 3 for $8 here.

  • Chadstone VIC has tags with 3 for $8 but they also say 1 for $2. Scans as $2.

    • I tried scanning them in WA, and they came up as $3.79 each.

    • Same in Oakleigh.

  • Melbourne had 3 for $8 doesn't say $2each ???
    Is this select stores only?

    • I just noticed this on their site:

"Prices and range may differ from region to region. Tell us your location to see your local prices"

When I tried SA, WA, or NSW the price jumps. Didn't bother with other locations.

  • NSW 2118 has tags with 3 for $8 but scans as $2 each.
