Girlfriends Cat Found after 5 Months - Speculations?

Additional information
So we went to pick up the cat at the RSPCA today and they said the person who dropped him off said he had been wandering around the area for 5 months.

What we noticed when we took him back home is he keeps meowing as where before he was lost, he would only do it for attention or wants to be let inside. We're keeping him inside for a few weeks now.

He doesn't want to play with toys even when there's catnip involved. He would always walk to the front door and stare at it. Does a domestic animal forget their owners or home for being stray for so long?

/////////////////////////////////////

My girlfriends cat went missing about 5 months ago. He's an outside cat and ever since he went missing, we were speculating what may have happened to him. We thought someone might of picked him up and took him home, or he got caught in a trap from some animal hater or got hit by a car.

We gave up after about 3 weeks of posting out flyers and trying out social media but to no avail, we didnt get any leads.

Today, my girlfriends parents got a call from the RSPCA saying that her cat has been found. Someone has dropped him off at the RSPCA. They found him about 15km from her house. They said he was fine and everything and then being a worry-wart I am, I think there may be something more sinister going on.

How can a cat go missing for 5 months then suddenly be found alive 15km away?

My friend at work said some people pick animals off the street then take them home to breed them and then sell their babies for money then release them back on the streets again. That sounds really disturbing.

So my thoughts are what do you think happened to the cat?

I'm happy that hes been returned but I'm just the kind of guy that always worries the littlest things.

  • If he's well fed and clean, then someone probably cat napped him. Otherwise who knows.. Stranger things have happened with cats

Run a metal detector over the cat, I bet hes been rigged with a spy camera, n just need the 5 months for the scars to heal and to be trained how to use the camera

This. Beware of the cat. He might have been converted by ISIL extremists and might be working undercover to find out where you live, who your friends are and where your stash of Whiska's is stored.

Anyway there are loads of stories online of cats being found and returned to their homes after years…this, this and this for example. I'm sure your cat had a pretty good 'holiday' and will have loads of stories and facebook photos to show.

I think a cat scan is called for.

      • Meow, rather than later.

Selling kittens? Sounds unlikely, people are always giving them away for free.

If he is not desexed and outdoors, he's found himself a girlfriend.

  • Neighbour doesn't like cats/your cat so decides to take him for a ride and dumps him. Your cat slowly makes his way back home. Quite possible I can assure you. Any pigeon racers or bird fanciers in your neighbourhood?

  • Someone prolly started feeding it, then some random neighbour didn't like it and gave it to rspca

Breeding is rare unless they are certain it's pure and is one of the expensive types like Russian blue or rag doll etc

I have neighbours who feed random cats and they give in her front yard, after a while she brings them to a vet to check if they are owned, if not she chips them. Lol.

  • My guess is someone 'adopted' him, and either moved house, where he's wandered off and been handed in by a neighbour, or they could no longer keep him.

  • Looking at the positives…he is back home.!

  • Please read additional info guys. Thanks

  • Trauma. Give him plenty of attention and assurance, he should come good. Young cat?

    • About 7 years

  • Cats are resilient as all get out… as Possumbly suggested, plenty of attention an assurance… My old cat was trapped in one of those old rabbit traps for 4-5 weeks before his paw rotted through and he could get home… Following a week at the vets, and some time at home, he was good as gold…

  • Brainwashed by the North Koreans. :)

More likely just had a great holiday somewhere else for 5 months and wants to go travelling again, surviving on being fed by kind people, and wreaking havoc on the native wildlife. :(

    • It is evident the cat has been spoilt in the 5 months it's gone missing… unlimited food, catnaps and toys to play with. Pining for the fjords, I might say.

  • Are you sure it's your puddie cat?

    • lol

  • He could of been kidnapped by Aliens and therefore the last 5 months may only seem like one night away to him.
Test him out by strapping him to a bench and shinning heaps of really bright lights at him. If it flips him out I think you have your answer.
Are there any signs of probing?

He might be meowing cos he has been outside the last 5 months and knows what it's like to be freeeeee now and he doesn't wanna be stuck at home?

Cats do that though. Wonder around and find somewhere with lots of food if they are not satisfied at their current place and stay there until someone turns them in.

  • He has been roaming free for months and now he's not allowed outside - of course he's meowing?
