Need help. Getting a 24" bike for junior.

Need some of your advice.

Going to buy my son his first proper bike.
Shop says $319 for a giant 24" XTC JR
Deal or no deal? Any suggestion on the choice of the bike. Thanks.

Can I suggest NOT getting a 24" bike, and instead getting a XS frame 26"?

24" bikes are notoriously hard to resell, and can even sometimes be hard to get parts for. Given that they are usually purchased for children/teenagers they have a fairly short usable life too (ie the child outgrows them). A friend works in a bike shop and he won't even stock 24" bikes as he doesn't feel they are a good buy for anyone.

    Just my 2 cents.

    • Thank you for the 2 cents worth hundreds to me.
BTW, spoken to the shop again. $349 for the blue with front gear, $319 for the black no front gear.

        No worries.

Personally, I'd still opt for a small-frame 26" (or 27.5" these days) for the reasons mentioned above.

If you are absolutely set on a 24" frame, I'd consider looking second-hand (for the reasons mentioned above, you can usually find someone selling one. Your bike shop may even be able to connect you with someone selling one).

There's nothing wrong with a 24" bike, they are just a niche market that doesn't tend to last you very long as the rider grows out of them quickly.

  • Just curious - is the type of bike with petrol motor ok to be on the road? saw one was "driving" at 60km/h on the road.

        • no wonder people are selling them left right and centre.

        • last i knew it was around $2k worth of fines if caught riding one anywhere in public (footpath/ovals/parks/car parks etc). unregistered motor vehicle (cant be registered), possibly unlicensed rider, breach of ADR's i forget the rest they do you for.

you can have them in public if they are under 200w (i think the figure is) but they go barely faster than walking pace. if someones flying past you at 60kph its either going down a big hill or definitely over 200w

  • I've had a Giant hybrid bike for about 5 years now… it rusts and has faults like cheaper bikes.

The trouble with kids bikes is how much use will they get from them? Most end up being ridden a couple of times and then sitting in the shed.

With the wheel & frame size that would be determined by the size of the kid??

Main thing to watch with bikes is the weight… some are very heavy and thus a chore to ride.

  • Buy one second hand. They are an in between size and often only used for a couple of years before on selling. I've bought two now for around $80 each, gumtree/eBay have them fairly regularly. They second one was in near new condition, the first was good, but well used. You could save a couple of hundred easily as the most expensive of the brand name models seem to be sold around $150, giant, avanti etc.
