Hey all, about to retire my 2Tb internal HDD and replace with a new unit.
What are people choosing for a balance of price vs reliability for storage (movies/music etc, nothing critical) at the moment? I'm thinking a WD Green based on price alone - but it's been a while since I bought a new HDD and was wondering if there any I should avoid.
Comments/horror-stories welcome…
If you don't need an increase in storage space, keep your current 2TB HDD and get another 2TB HDD and do a RAID 1.
There aren't any particularly unreliable drive manufacturers as such. Some people here hate Seagate and will say they are the most unreliable…etc. But there hasn't been any sort of scientific study to prove this. No, Backblaze blog isn't a scientific study.
It really just comes down to luck and your usage pattern. If you're unlucky, you might end up with a dud, if you do lots of read and writes, you'll wear out your drive faster.
Don't forget that hard drive failures are kind of parabolic (convex), it goes down initially, as the dud drives will all fail and then the failure rates are quite low until you start reaching the end of its life cycle.
