The Star Casino Dealer, Any Advice?

Hi all, I was just hoping if anyone who had worked for the crown/The Star as a dealer give me an insight to their job experience there. Eg environment/other employees / pay rate

I have worked at the crown as a dealer. Firstly the money….as a beginner dealer with just 1 major game (likely Black Jack and its many variants or Roulette) at crown is around about $24 an hour flat rate 24/7 the only exception to this is double pay on public holidays. After your first 7-10 months you will be offered a 2nd game, and your pay rate will increase about $1.50 an hour. Your pay also increases based on the amount of years you work at crown, and you will also get yearly 4% pay rises (union has done well for the staff in this regard for the last few years)

Pros: They do all your washing and ironing of your uniform, 2 free staff buffet entries per shift, free drink/coffee dispensers in staff break rooms, discounted parking, paid 20 minute breaks after every 60-80 minutes of dealing.

Cons: Constant nightshift mainly, working most weekends, working most public holidays. Sore loser gamblers, not allowed to accept tips.

As for other emplyees, you wont get to know/mix with everyone, but you do eventually see the same faces over and over again. Their is areas in crown where the ga,blers are allowed to smoke at the tables, but you can request to be kept away from them, mainly higher limit rooms like Teak or Mahogany.

    Good luck

    • Great response MBC77 !
      Excellent insight.

Is it sort of fun tho?

The dealers usually have (pardon the pun) poker faces, but do you get enjoyment of "winning" ?

I think I am imagining the movie Vacation Las Vegas, in the scene were the dealer is beating Chevy Chase.

There is some dealers that just have ZERO personality and enjoy when the punters lose- I can never figure out why, the dealer doesnt get any bonus the more the player loses. Mostly it just becomes a boring repetitive job. And there is no glamour in the job. Your dealing mainly with people losing their money. Some games from a dealers point of view are more fun to deal, and some a just completely boring. I was lucky enough to hold 3 major games (Blackjack Roullete and Poker) and another 8 or so minors like Big Wheel, Sic Bo, Casino War 3 card…..

I can tell you if dealers we alowed to accept tips, they would be way more happy and chirpy. A dealers doom and gloom is usually derived from distressed gamblers.

Personally I enjoyed dealing roullete, as it involved some mind stimulation working out payouts, and the fact that you could walk around a little and not be stuck in the same spot just standing their (ie) BJ tables.

Loved getting a 2o minute smoko every hour. All breaks were paid which was awesome

by reading the title, thought someone was going to tell all about casino.

    • Yep, given the escalating number of rant posts of late, I was kind of expecting a long diatribe about how some dodgy croupier wouldn't double down or something. ;)

Best of luck with the job OP! :)

  • I wish I could get a job there. They rejected me immediately a few years ago. No phone call, and just an email.

Although, I think they should only accept people that can stay emotionless, otherwise there are all kinds of mental health related issues they would have to deal with.
