Samsung Galaxy Note 4 [Preorder] $949 @ Dick Smith

60

::EDIT:: That was fast! DS must have put the $854.10 price as an error, and has adjusted it to $949. Sorry guys :(
::EDIT2:: According to bradharvey's comment below, apparently it was a DS hourly deal, so the price reverted back to normal once we hit 1600 AEST today. Shame! Hopefully we see some bargains again soon.

[DS Price includes free delivery]

Local AUS stock, DS is cheaper than the $949 I can see online @ Samsung's own pre-order website.

Enjoy!

(Nov 5th release date stated on the page)

    • Clove, 479GBP / $874.70 Australian Dollar (not including shipping).
    • Kogan is listing at $899 (grey import)
    • so this deal is still better

      • Yep, best I can find! :)
::edit:: Apparently they priced it wrong, and updated it to $949. :(

  • Wonder how much that Oculus headunit will cost/

    • $249.99 AUD apparently. Sad :(
Hopefully there are some cheaper options (2nd hand possibly) in 6+ months.

  • 16gb or 32gb?

    • Hi mate, 32GB apparently. Apparently the other telco's & Samsung only have the Note 4 with 32GB base model. It also has a micro SD slot on the back as well (under the cover).

      • bacause the virgin mobile shows 16GB,anyway it is too late, missed the $854 one.

        • Hmm if that's the case the best bet (on a plan) is probably the $80 p/m with Optus. That has the 32GB model. But it's not a bargain seeing as you're paying normal non-ozbargain prices.

        • @qldmike: Virginmobile has 32gb lowest plan at $57 with 2.3gb data

Why does it say $949 when i go in?

    • Hi, I had it in my cart at $854.10.. Then just refreshed it. The Price is now $949… I think maybe Dicksmith made an error in pricing it, and -JUST- changed it. Sucks :( Sorry to get your (and my) hopes up. Appears Kogan might be the best offer at the moment for a grey import, or until some others come along.

It wasn't an error - it was one of their hourly deals.

        It finished at 1600 AEDST

Aw damn, I missed the deal by spending time submitting the link here. Oh well haha. I'm sure some more Note 4 deals will start popping up over the next few weeks.

Quite enjoying my ONePlusOne here. 90% of the phone, 50% of the cost.
easily handleable, iPhone 6+ type screen..nice.

    • How do you find the camera now with all these updates? I'm looking forward to Android L being released in the next 24-48 hours :)

      • CyanogenMod team truly are second to none when it comes to these updates. Really look forward to testing RAW-cam ability as already baked into ROM. Android L some estimate by end of year, fans speculate end of November, I'll put it as around or perhaps before Samsung update. \o/

        • was going to buy a new phone, but CM11 gave my S3 a new lease of life.
The process was a bit of a learning curve though.

  • What is the price of Note 3 now?

    • still too damn high ;-D

      About $747~ for Aus stock.
Expect a drop hopefully once Note 4 launches Nov 5th.

  • Note 3 is better, USB3, SMALLER WITH SAME SIZE SCREEN

    • How do you benefit from USB3 on a phone?

    • +1

usb3, for all those times you transfer huge amounts of data to your phone, ALL of those times!
Note 4 has better camera, better battery life, better screen (proven to be more accurate + lower brightness and higher brightness), better loudspeaker (doesn't get muffled when playing games/movies by your hand), looks better, actually has metal that won't chip and make phone look terribly cheap, need i go on?

    • What version of USB does Note 4 use? Tell me they didn't go back to USB2.

      • They did. Don't know if this is the real reason, but apparently people found it too confusing, even though it was backwards compatible.

        • A few people I know had no idea they are backwards-compatible, as the socket doesn't look anything like the usb2 socket they are familiar with.

Also, at least with the Note 3, there is no benefit to usb3 unless you enable the usb3 transfer mode in the drop-down menu each and every time you plug it in to transfer data. That made it pointless for the masses - only techies would know about that.

        • People are so dumb.

They even provide their own cable anyway, so there should not be a reason not to use it "because I don't have the right cable".

        • @lostn: What real-world benefit does USB3 on a phone give to the typical non-technical consumer today?

        • +1

@eug: I don't know, but I think you underestimate the number of technical consumers owning phones like a Note 4.

I for one put a lot of movies on mine.

Someone non-technical is more likely to get a simpler and cheaper phone. Or an iPhone, which has had great success with these kinds of consumers. Or maybe an S4/S5 line of phone which is more common than the Note line.

        • @lostn: You might be underestimating the number of non-technical people who simply want a phone with a big screen. The only well-known large-screen phone that telcos sell is the Note series.

What transfer speed do you get to your phone over USB3? Do you actually turn on USB3 mode every time?

We tech people need to be aware of being in a bubble. We might know lots of tech-minded people because birds of a feather and all that. But Samsung sells millions of Notes to millions of people because they saw an ad on TV or online, or saw their friend using one, or the guy at the phone shop said it's good, and not because of anything technical.

        • +1

@eug: I don't have a Note 3. But I change the videos on my phone frequently. I can live without USB3, but it's a shame to not have it when the previous model had it.

I buy fast Class 10 cards, so it's kind of a waste if the potential speeds are being bottlenecked by USB2.

Tech-minded might be a bit hazy a term to define. If someone wants a big screen, they probably want to be using it for easier browsing. I'd say they're at least semi tech-minded if they're using the smart features of their phone. I just think these people should be smart enough to not be confused by a slightly different USB connection, for which a cable is already provided.

        • @lostn: OK, looks like this is all moot.

I just tested it with my S5 and high-speed Samsung UHS 1 micro sd card. I formatted the card in the phone and copied a 1.97GB file from my laptop in both USB2 and USB3 mode. You actually have to manually turn USB3 mode on the phone every time you plug it in. A warning is given saying it could cause interference with phone/data, and that USB3 mode will be disabled after 10 minutes of no activity.

          S5 in USB2 - 3 mins 14 seconds
          S5 in USB3 - 3 mins 16 seconds
USB3 card reader on same computer with same cable and file - 55 seconds

For some reason, there was no speed advantage in enabling the USB3 mode on the S5. It maxed out at about 10.3MB/s in both modes. The card reader averaged 36.67MB/s.

I wonder if the Note 4 will improve on that.

        • There: 10MBs (80Mbps > seen greater throughput over cable- net) also where a geekier unit may well have escaped this..inadequacy.

Rather it were a OnePLUS, you'd been able to throw my, now an old SanDisk Extreme[32GB], on it in matter of minutes (hour..no thanks). *Device received 12gbytes in 6 minutes=roughly what USB2 accepts, whilst in lieu of one dropped card/expansion slot.

tldr; 15 mins today works well, 64G +30 mins & there starts nuisance.

        • @daver:

That's a bit hard to understand. You threw your sandisk micro SD card onto your OnePlus? The OnePlus doesn't have a microSD slot.

As it happens, the OnePlus is my main phone at the moment, so I did the test again. I also remembered that the S5's internal memory would be faster, so I tested that too.

          With the same file:

          OnePlus USB2 - 1min 35s - 21.2MB/s
          S5 USB2 internal memory - 53s - 38MB/s
          S5 USB3 internal memory - 57.6MB/s

USB3 makes a huge difference if copying files to internal memory! So it looks like Samsung is using a crappy microSD interface that really limits the usefulness of the USB3 connection. The S5 is a paltry 16GB so you probably wouldn't store any media on it.

That said, unless the USB3 connection becomes automatic (i.e. you don't have to manually enable USB3 mode every time you plug it in), its usefulness to the general public would be limited. It must have something to do with USB3's 2.4GHz interference.

        • *33MB/s rather from my USB3 extreme SSdrive_on micro/OTG cable sent short videos and 1 movie to ~52GB available(either factory new or following 1 update; cannot remember though used a stopwatch so perhaps deduct 2MB. 12GB~6mins xfer).

Chose OPO 50+GB fairly instinctively; now 2 months later looking at iphone_100gb6's with a slight envy. Granted the old CZ80 will supply 100MB/s it's likely I will target this next android down track; please to see S5 heading there if only in an experimental (yet a decent) mode but as media + VR apps tempt vaster storages w' brisk xfers needed.

        • @eug: Did you try your speed tests with both internal memory and microSD card?

        • @lostn: Yup, the results are right above.

        • @eug: Seems the internal memory is much faster than the SD.

    • I think I'd take the better display and SoC over USB3.0 and a small size benefit on an already massive phone, personally.

  • Note4 is first sammy to have OIS optical image stabilisation
