Tomb Raider (2013) $4USD @ Steam

1550

Amazing price for an amazing game.

Used to think posting Steam deals a bit pointless, but I find myself checking OzBargain more than Steam, these days.

Crazy price for a great game.

    • +1

Looks like the GOTY edition ($7.49) now includes all the extras from Survival edition (it didn't last sale).

Check the details of the different editions here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/203160/

      • +1

Also worth mentioning the entire Tomb Raider Collection is only $15.99 USD - that's a lot of gaming goodness for not a lot of cash.

      • If I buy the game and the DLC bundle (US$3.99), wouldn't that have a few more DLCs than the GOTY bundle?

      • +1

i wish it were the PSN prices. great game, but dont want to play on my Mac.

    • -3

Don't know why this got negged when I pretty much agree with it.

More of a story game rather than role playing, which it says it is. Only played about 30 minutes of it and gave up. Just wasn't for me.

That being said: $4 for this game is a bargain if you don't have many games to choose from and you're bored.

      • +2

Must say that you just missed a GOTY just because you gave up too quickly. Give it another try and reach some actual gameplay first before deciding next time

      • +4

Role-playing?? It's an action game. You know, like every other Tomb Raider ever made? The first half-hour or so establishes the scene, before settling into a fairly unrelenting pace for the rest of the game. Tomb Raider 2013 was, and still is, a fantastic game. It's a Tomb Raider game with a very modern game design approach - with a health dose of inspiration from Uncharted thrown in. Worth $4? Abso-f***ing-lutely.

      • thanks for the feedback, i saw the gameplay for the first level, but i dont think i can last 6 hours of doing the same shit

im not saying the genre is bad. it was great the first itme you play it. But after that every one of these games feel the same

I anticipate Far cry 4 to be the same

    • +3

Thanks! I too clicked on this deal even though I hate both movies and good video games, and therefore may not like this game, so thanks for saving me a whole $4.

    • -3

A dissenter! Quick, flood him with downboats and snark, that will really prove him wrong.

    • +6

If you hate computer games, you wont enjoy this. :(

  • Is the Tomb of the Lost Adventurer worth it ($0.59 or cheaper on the TF2 market)? I've been keeping an eye on it (also because I'm missing the last Bow upgrade ingame and can't find it at all - need extra crates).

    • +1

You can earn all upgrades without any game addons. From what I understand upgrades can be locked in three ways; story progression, weapon usage and salvage milestones. The last two are theories but the ideas are; use a weapon lots and you will find upgrade parts for it, and reach salvage collection set amounts ie 500 unlocks shotgun stock, 1000 unlocks assault rifle rifling etc. At least 5000 salvage is required over the course of the whole game (for a separate achievement) anyway. The Tomb of the Lost Adventurer gives you a bunch of bonus salvage so it might be the quickest way to get extra salvage, it only takes about 5mins to complete.

      • That's kind of the only reason I want it…I think nearly a year ago, I spent ages trying to find extra salvage to get the upgrade. Couldn't find anymore.

        • +1

There was a perk to earn salvage from animals, very slow way but they were the only salvageable items that respawned from what I recall

    • +1

No it isn't worth even 59 cents. Save your money. I'm serious I paid about 1 buck and it wasn't even worth my time let alone the money. It is literally 4 minutes long, you walk in solve a simple puzzle that involves lighting some sheet like things to drop the plane, get one salvage crate and that's it.

      • +1

There is a hella lot more than 1 salvage crate, maybe 5-6 + at least 2 chests. You maybe didn't find the secret room…

No I did not, thanks for the info. It's a shame I already 100% the game before I hit the DLC up.

  • +3

This game is pretty much as good as Uncharted with better combat. I just finished it on PS4, it's very good.

    • Uncharted doesn't give you flaming arrow headshots though

    • didn't hear much rave about this game, but saying it's as good uncharted seals the deal, thanks.

  • +17

"Tomb Raider is already in your Steam library" hah. Stuffed if I know when I bought it

  • +9

Excellent game. One of the best games I played last year!

  • +2

crap I think I just bought it when I already own it - I can't keep track of all these bargains

  • Awesome game! wel worth the $59.00 i paid for it on STEAM

  • Agreed. If you haven't got it. Get it.

  • +1

watch "the descent" to put you in the mood

  • Thanks for that.
2 hours of my life just disappeared. :)
Doubt I'm even 20% of the way through the game yet.

  • Damnit! bought it for $10.42!!!

Haven't finished it yet, but it was through no fault of the game. It was and is pretty darn good. I would so jump on this price now! :)

  • +1

Good game. It's a must buy for $4.

My only gripe with it is that the story is not very believable. The game tries to make Lara inexperienced and vulnerable. Reluctant to kill even an animal. She's sexually assaulted. She's shaken up and traumatized after her first kill. But within an hour of the game, once it gives you your first handgun, you'll be killing dudes left and right. You'll become a killing machine, which isn't consistent with the story they're trying to go for. For someone who's never handled a firearm before, I headshotted everyone (the game encourages this by giving you more XP for a headshot). I wasn't the hunted, I was the hunter. Everyone was more afraid of me than I was of them. This is a classic case of gameplay not being consistent with story.

Here's a video comparing the body count from the original Tomb Raider, and TR 2013.

You've gotta see it.. it's hilarious.

And the generic, one-man army dudebro protagonist of 90% of the other FPS games out there, is?

Far Cry 3's was even more stupendous from that perspective, and it still got unanimous praise.

A frat-boy who's never so much as cocked a gun in his life goes from vodka shots to precision marksman shots in the span of 2 firefights.

At least Lara's made a career out of dangerous, death-defying stunts; her I can give a pass.

      • +4

What about gordon freeman? Nerd quantum physics scientist goes from sciencing to HEV suit, crowbar wielding killing machine at a drop of a hat.

Granted Gordon might have been mute, a little sociopathic and he was probably holding his urges to kill from working at a desk for too long, I'd give him a pass too.

        • +2

he was probably holding his urges to kill from working at a desk for too long,

          Ditto with Lara.

Over 10 years of being objectified for her rack and seen as nothing but a test platform for titty physics.

That'll take its toll on a person; Lara had a lot of pent-up rage and channeled right back at her predominantly male enemies in the latest Tomb Raider.

      • -1

And the generic, one-man army dudebro protagonist of 90% of the other FPS games out there, is?

Those games don't try to pass you off as a rookie who's never handled a weapon before. The exception is Gordon Freeman.

Far Cry 3's was even more stupendous from that perspective, and it still got unanimous praise.

Never played the game. But I'm not saying TR is the only offender in this. If I was making the game, I would have kept the gameplay as is, but change the story and not have her be vulnerable and inexperienced. Just make her badass from the beginning and it's fine.

At least Lara's made a career out of dangerous, death-defying stunts; her I can give a pass.

TR 2013 is a prequel. Reboot actually. But that career you described didn't exist yet in this game.

Granted Gordon might have been mute, a little sociopathic and he was probably holding his urges to kill from working at a desk for too long, I'd give him a pass too.

Gordon had training though. When you do the tutorial, it runs you through the shooting, duck jumping and all that.

        • +1

change the story and not have her be vulnerable and inexperienced

But that was the WHOLE POINT of TR2013. It was a reboot going back to Lara's roots. Sure, it sped through her evolution into killing machine, but that was for the sake of pacing. Would it be fun to play an action game where your protagonist breaks down into a little puddle of emotion each time they had to kill someone? I doubt it. Not to mention that I'd imagine in real life, a person put in that situation - where they're fighting for their life - would quickly realise what they had to do (i.e. kill) and somewhat quickly become desensitised to it.

TR 2013 is a prequel. Reboot actually. But that career you described didn't exist yet in this game.

She was already physically fit and relatively strong minded at the start of the game - that goes a long way towards survival.

Gordon had training though. When you do the tutorial, it runs you through the shooting, duck jumping and all that.

I hope you're joking. Amar89 and scrimshaw were certainly not being all that serious.

    • I totally agree with you. I killed hundreds of guys by the end and she never uttered a word about all of the killing after that first instance.

The game was great though. I was really dreading the final kind of 'boss fight'. I found it awesome that the game had built it up so much that I was genuinely afraid :P

FFFFUUUUU I bought this for $5 few weeks back. Could have saved $1. True Ozbargainer.

  • This game has amazing graphics and is a lot of fun. Would have preferred more problem solving like the earlier tombraider series as this one leans more on the combat side. Still, great game!

  • As a red blooded nerd male I remember when the original came out and all the sexual hype that surrounded it. Backing up against walls and into corners to get close ups of her low poly naughty bits. Those were good times my friends.

    • +1

And don't forget the Nude Raider mod!

  • This is a great game, I think I paid $10 for it and I thought it was an incredible bargain. Lara also looks amazing, even my sister was impressed.

  • when was this game released?

    • +3

      Erm… Wasn't the deal's title clear enough?

More specifically, according to its Steam page, it was released on March 4th, 2013.

      • +2

Yep it was, sorry just got back from day of studying my brains kinda fried, cheers anyway.

  • +1

I'm really trying to improve my life (by not playing games and focusing on other shaat). But… $4. Sigh. What am I meant to do?

  • Aww… bought the GOTY edition for $6 using GMG credit thinking it wouldn't go any cheaper but I would have much rathered the normal version for $2 cheaper.

  • Will this work in Mac ? ( i don't understand the system requirements …>.<)?

    • +1

Tomb Raider 2013 will but the previous ones won't - according to Steam.

      • Thanks mate but I was also referring to the game requirements ? Will the work on a normal MacBook Pro 2011-2012 without any extra improvement ?

        • Haha wow well that definitely wasn't clear. In any case, that Mac Pro only has integrated HD3000 graphics which really isn't made for high-level 3D games. Looks like you'll get 20-30FPS at 720p with Ultra textures and pretty much every other setting off (AA, tessellation, SSAO etc). See this video for an idea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cy4cneEeFH8

Granted that's a Win 8 system - so I'm not really sure how much difference that makes.

TL;DR - Yes it will work, but it wont be particularly pretty.

  • Is there an expiry date for this?

    • About 9AM Saturday.
