wtf would you do with 7kg of strawberries!?!

you couldnt possibly use them up in time. plus vote for the value… but jeez.

1st world problems I guess, but what a waste of food :(.

    • +8

      freeze them, make smoothies

      • +6

Yeah that, or jam, or share with family, work etc :)

      • I froze the 24 punnets I purchased from Fruit Market at Westfield Knox for $8

        • +1

I've never seen them there that cheap before. Did you get the throw away stock at the end of the day?

        • @unity1:

It was a Sunday around 2pm, purchased them while on a break at work. Not sure if they were throw away stock it was almost all edible except for a handful or two as they sneakily hid the moldy ones on the bottom. There's usually boxes of fruit or veg for x dollars on the butchers side of the market.

    • +1

      I make jam. No waste…. :-)

    • +2

Sell them for profit. Make jam. Give some to friends & family.
      Edit: I was well beaten.

      • Jam makers are often oppressed

the saucemakers on the other hand get off scott free

    • +1

      Home-made jam.

    • +1

Sell to BOOST, o wait, do they even use real strawberries?

      • Yes. But only one berry per smoothie.

    • +6

      Nope, the article says
$5 for 2 punnets which hold 1.5kg each, or $10 for a tray which holds about 6-8kg

  • Can I price match at OW local farm?

  • +2

Goddamn that is cheap. Last time I drove to Sunshine Coast strawberry farms they sell at the same price as retailers, the bastards.

    • -5

Oh what? Farmers trying to make a living? The nerve!

      • +5

Tough Aussie battler farmers with huge transport costs out to the front shed. Those huge overheads sourcing highly skilled foreign labour pick-up artists sob, whinge

      • +3

Oh what? Farmers trying to make a living? The nerve!

Actually, if it's the same place I think he's talking about (supposedly just off the highway but you have to drive forever to get there Payton?) they charge around the top price I have seen in supermarkets, and that's for picking them yourself. Their signs on the highway are deceptive, as are the other half dozen they have along the way, to con you into thinking it's just down the road.

I totally get where you're coming from re farmers, but rather than trying to make a living, they're trying to make a killing in this case.

wtf would you do with 7kg of strawberries!?!

Sell some to your mates for a profit, to get a book on how to preserve food.

A place about 10 minutes drive from here was seling them for $3kg a few years ago, pick your own and I thought that was good value. This blows that one out of the water.

        • Hey
If i remember correctly its the one where the sign is on southbound side of Bruce Hwy. Had to drive a long way on a road barely fitting two cars after taking the exit (following the sign) lol. I think that was it.

    • Sunshine Coast strawberry farms they sell at the same price as retailers

Umm don't you pick your own- lets see 1 for the bucket, then one for me ummm yum ;)

    • I went to the one near Donnybrook on the Bruce highway. Charged me $12 for 1.2kg, cheaper to buy from Aldi!. Signs say no eating allowed while on the patch too. So not worth it…

      • Signs say no eating allowed

Pfft! Miserable sods - that's half the fun of it, especially if taking children. It's good for them to see where real food actually comes from, and how many are they really going to eat while on the job.

        • +1

That's the good thing, this place was fine with it :) our 3yo had a ball!

  • google states 55 min drive for me… ummm no.

    • lol told my Missus and its like yum when are we going!!!!

      • +2

So when does she want to go?

    • +1

Was the same distance for us, lunch in Swan Valley after :)

    • +12

43 Hour drive for me according to Google maps. I should get the tray.

    • 59 mins for me, we must live close!

      • +3

        or 120 mins apart

    • If you live SOR there is another on Thomas Road Armadale apparently. Don't know what they charge though.

      • They dont do picking anymore.. as of a month ago anyway.

  • Just been there today :)
Nearly must have run into another Ozbargainer. Been eating nothing but strawberries all day. Must have about 10kg.

    • Haha we were there about 1030, and about 45mins before we went in! But worth it :)

      • Was there many strawberries left? Few thousand ozbargainers are going to ozbargain that farm in the next few days

        • +3

It's pretty expansive and word is already spreading from a week ago, but should be fine within the next week :)

  • +1

Wow that is an awesome price, $9.50 per kg and $4 entry fee per person in Adelaide. Not worth it.

  • Oh wow, a decent deal in WA
23 minute drive, perks of living at the end of the Joondalup Line

    • +2

would probably be the only one!

  • I wonder what freshly picked taste like compared to ones off the shelve.

    • +1

Probably sweeter as they have ripened on the plant as opposed to being picked slightly unripe for transport.

      • Yep. They are more red, more juicy, and more sweet. Which is why the shops don't want them and they sell them cheap: they would not have a long enough shelf life.

  • How many hours would it take you to pick 7kg of strawberries?

    • +1

Half hour would be more than enough if you work hard.

      • By the time I got there, you'd need close to an hour if you want to select the good ones. Word is spreading fast. But new ones grow every day of course.

    • Just me doing it was around an hour or so I think

  • I did have a go yesterday and made jams. Good value and family activities.

  • +4

So, any deals on cheap flights to Perth?

    • It'd want to be a bargain flight, a taxi from the Airport to the strawberry farm would cost you about $85-90

  • Posted on the Buggybuddy's FB page today:
"If you are planning on heading to Bullsbrook to pick strawberries today, one of our members have let us know that there is a queue at the moment as they are having to bus people from the car park to the new strawberry field. "

    • Was the same yesterday. They drive you there. The queue to get there was about 15 mins. Getting back we had to wait almost half an hour.

      • -2

        anyone start a food fight?

        • +1

Nah man, was like one big hippy strawberry party. Most people were too tired to throw strawberries after carrying their 7kg+ trays for so long :) (which was actually closer to 10kg, IMO).

        • @Make it so: makes me dream of the days of the jumping castle filled with strawberries. Those were the days.

  • Any strawberry farm in Sydney for pick your own fruit?

  • +3

Just got back, was there for 70 mins managed to get 13.2kg of the shiniest ones. Hint: go all the way back and a little to the left, Untouched area… for now. Also toddlers, toddlers everywhere.

    • +5

      ah…they are the labourers

  • +1

I've managed to fit 13.5kgs no problem!

    • +2

      in one sitting?

  • They have had queues of people waiting to get in. Expect to wait.

    UPDATE
There are no ques as of today. We pulled up, walked about 15m and were able to pick right away.

There are still tonnes and tonnes of strawberries out in the neat rows.

It took me and my lady about 25mins to fill up a box.

Consider bringing a second plastic bag so you and your partner can split up and be much more efficient.

    • TLDR: If you are worried about wait times / there being no strawberries left, worry no more! Get up there :P
  • Still many strawberries, as said above, bring a bag so you can split up and regroup to put into the tray. Bring water or a drink as well.
EDITWhen you get home you'll probably find that the bottom layer of strawberries would have been SQUASHED by the top, just a precaution ^_^ (also don't let kids bump over the tray, it causes a little mess…)*EDIT*

  • We went there today and the price for a tray is $10 now.

    http://www.lifeofbim.com/2014/11/pick-your-own-strawberries-…

    • Check title, has been $10 since I posted :)

But great to see there's still a ton there!
