Hi, I'm looking for recommendations on a reliable mobile GSM phone to take to the US. This will purely be for receiving calls or SMS. I'm thinking of going with a Telstra prepaid SIM and getting the Nokia 208.

Last time we bought a cheapy in the US to use there, that included the calls. You can check out the value now by looking at Target Wal-mart etc websitesThat way you know it will work on their networks, there is some difference with some of the frequencies
Depend on how long you stay, the nature of your trip and how much you want to spend.
if you go for leisure and no need for constant phone connection. Free wifi ever in US. Worth to bring a smart phone that can use internet phone eg Skype. Skype free to friends/family. Left a voice message before departure to ask callers to email or skype if need. Put $5 Skype credit so to make calls from Skype to anyone. imessage from iphone to iphone is free with wifi.
if I need constant phone connection, I bring my dual sim motoG, get a local SIM and pop it in.

Most nokia feature phones (and lumia's) are built like tanks, you won't have reliability issues with Nokia.
