Hi, in Melbourne for 10 days and I always only get around on bike. Tried Melb city bikes before but find it's a bit if a hassel (time limits, cant lock them etc).
Anyone have a cheap alternative? In Syd there are old thrown out bikes all over the place bur im not seeing any here
Buy a cheapie on GumTree for $100. Sell again for around that if it's a good bargain or $80. Advertise it for sale as soon as you get it and just tell them they can collect it on the date ten days away.
Seen some alright bikes for $100-$150 on GT recently as I wanted to do this. Sometimes they even sell with lock and or helmet. But you probably brought your own. Wash it, fix things up a bit, oil it, pump tyres to optimal pressure etc. If you can't sell it just place a freebie ad or give to a homeless person or student. Come out ahead as it's over $200 or something ridiculous to keep a CityCycle bike here in Brisbane (most ride and change every 30mins and wait 5mins to check out another one, but does cost $60 a year to subscribe which is alright), which no one does, but hire bikes for ten days wouldn't be under $100.
Who knows, might use the bike for 10 days for free or even make a buck.
Just use the trams and the city bikes like everyone else? City bike depots are everywhere and helmets are free. For everything else just use a tram.
