  • title not all that descriptive, see posting guidelines. But a good buy anyway, $899 with a core2 quad processor & 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD - wish I had the money to buy it :-(

  • Meh, basically the same price as something like this after the OS upgrade.

Decent price for a brand name box, but not spectacular.

The Lenovo has a weaker processor (2.33 vs 2.5), integrated graphics (vs. ATi 4350), no free delivery, no 15 months AV, $200 more expensive and no 7% MBC, + there are tonnes of discount codes for Dell. The only benefit of the Lenovo is Vista Business edition, and even then the Dell still comes out cheaper and better value.

It's not ground breaking but it's a reasonable deal. Could probably do it yourself for a similar price but if you want something assembled this is a good price.

      • You've convinced me.

        +ve.

  • Any one got a valid discount code that would make this even better ?

    • I have a 3% code but it's through work so they'll verify the e-mail address, many workplaces offer discounts - does yours? Remember to use the 7% MBC rebate, you'll get another $57~ off ($899 less GST / 7%).

if you're a member of NRMA then punch in your code and its a further 10% off.

If you are talking about the 50% business investment allowance the price has to be m
minimum $1000 exc GST so this would not qualify.

    From the ATO:
Computers and their component parts, such as the mouse, keyboard and monitor, are eligible, but pre-loaded application software used on them is not.

You need to work out the value of that software and the computer based on how much they would cost if bought separately. You then work out the proportion of the purchase price that relates to the computer only. You base your tax break deduction on this amount.

The cost of operating software that forms part of the computer does not need to be separated out from the cost of the computer.

    http://www.ato.gov.au/businesses/content.asp?doc=/content/00…

So the OS is in - but the $1k plus GST means this is out [so get a monitor or something to put yourself over the line]

    K

    • He mentions you have to upgrade the OS to get it, which puts it just over $1,000.

However if you use a decent discount code then you'd have to get another upgrade of some kind to put it over the top.

EDIT Ooohhh, you editted. Didn't know that. Thanks for the info.

While I won't poo poo this deal, people should know that Intel Core i5 is out, it's cheap and it has significant performance and power savings over Core 2 Duo/Quad. Dell is clearing out old technology at what may seem a relatively good price now, however A complete Core i5 gaming box can be assembled for under $1000 (excluding OS, but hey you can get Win7 through IEEE for $30 USD :D).

With our strengthening currency values and given a few weeks for initial price gouging to settle a complete Intel Core i5 build with DDR3 will be extremely affordable, so if you're technically minded and capable of building your own machine, hold on a few more weeks.

E.g. Current Netplus Build (just over $1000 at current prices with a GTX260+)
    Intel Core i5 750 LGA1156 CPU $269.00
    Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3R P55 MB $189.00
    Corsair 4Gb DDR3 1600 Memory $144.00
    500Gb Seagate SATA2 16Mb HDD $68.90
    CM Centurion 5 460 Watt Case $139.00
    GeForce GTX 260+ 896Mb DDR3 $226.00
Pioneer DVR-218 Black SATA DVD $44.00

    Total Price (Inc GST) $1,079.90

I just ordered one and got another 50 bucks off using the code described below:

"Dell Australia small business is currently offering $50 off any Vostro laptop or desktop who order online using the coupon code KW$W970DKBRXTJ. Simply add the code at the online checkout to make the $50 saving on a huge selection of Dell Vostro products.

This great deal is only available for the first 50 customers who order before the end of Thursday 10th September 2009…"

  • you cant claim back 50% of the purchase price with government rebate. You can only claim 50% depreciation. Might want to talk to your accountant about this.

    • With the investment allowance you can claim an extra 50% depreciation. Normally you depreciate a desktop over 4 years so in the first year you get 75% depreciation allowance.

Even then, it takes 75% of the purchase price off your taxable income. You don't claim it off the amount of tax you paid.

Say you pay an average of 30% tax rate, that means the real amount extra you save with the new allowance is 50% x 30% = 15% of the purchase price off the tax you pay.

Too many people are talking about the SMB allowance, when 1. they aren't a small business and thus 2. they don't understand the tax system.

Even if you are earning in the top tax bracket, the most you will save is 22.5% (50% x 45%)

  • had a look through this deal, it's great if you want to buy the base model, but I think they've bumped up the price on the options?

A 22" screen is nearly $500 if you want it - thats alot more than we paid for one through our last dell vostro order! maybe its a better model but there's no option for a cheap one.. there were afew other options with bumped up prices - be careful when choosing
