Eneloops for The 1000th Time

I'm diving into eneloops. I hear this might be an ok place to talk about Eneloops…anyone here used these before?? ;-)

Here are my observations so far:

Chargers:

  • Don't bother with the Panasonic over night charger or anything that requires that you charge two batteries at a time or charges by a timer
  • Sanyo quick charger is good for starters as it charges until they are full rather then a timer and you can charge a single battery at a time.
  • Maha C9000, La Crosse BC-700 or a rebadged version of it for those who wants to be an enthusiast

Batteries:

I'm lost here. Apparently they are produced in different countries which can affect the shelf life?

  • What's the difference, other than colour, between White, Chocolat, Tropical and Tones?
  • Eneloop Pro is the Panasonic higher capacity variant as is XX for Sanyo. Preferences?

    Any other hot tips?

Edit: added Maha C9000

  • You are pretty much correct on the charger front. The only thing I would add is the Maha C9000 as another alternative ot hte LaCrosse, I have been using one of these for years and it has paid off.

As for the batteries there isnt mucb difference between the coloured and the equivalent generation white eneloop. I think there is a lot of speculation about the newer Panasonic Eneloops vs Sanyo Eneloop but only time will tell.

I am running much older Eneloops (5+ years old)and they have served me well and I will get more when mine are finally worn out. I guess I will get whatever is available in the Eneloop brand at the time.

    • Thanks mate. Bought some of the Chocolat's from DSE. Now I just have to wait to find the right priced charger.

I have added the Maha C9000 to my original post.

  • Different generations, newer ones and versions are moving to China.

If you're worried stick with 'Made in Japan' ones.

Maha charger is highly rated, so yes, get those. I wish there were deals on them too.

    • Have the Chinese manufactured batteries actually been found to be worse through testing?

Not that I know of, not definitively anyway. Though they have less cycles I think, so that could form part of the answer.

What would you rather, Japan made or China made? Same price. That's the psychology.

I'll take Japan any day. Plus I don't like China, but most people, or those in Australia haven't quiet caught on to CCP and how nasty they are and how they are crooks. ;-p

At least Japan is our ally and we can trust them, so I'll buy their products.

The overnight charger is ok for eneloop noobs. For pro eneloop users get something like the La Crosse.

  • The different colors can represent different capacities, charge cycles, capacity retention, etc.
For example, chocolat are 1900-2000mAh, 1.2v, retain 65% charge after 5 years and are rated for 2100 cycles.

    Here's a chart I found on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eneloop#Battery_variants
