TV: Sound Bar vs Speakers

We all know the sound quality from the TV's built-in speakers don't cut it.

Now, I'm wondering if I should invest in a stereo system, or just go on the cheap and get a decent soundbar for $150 ~ $250 ?

I don't wish to spend too much on the audio systems yet, because I've just got a 4 year old 40" TV which isn't that great anyway. Bought for $2k in 2010 … can't believe how cheap TVs have gotten!

  • Personally I'd go with a Stereo..
Then you're getting a CD player (maybe) and Radio as well as some decent TV speakers.

  • if you have a quality tv you probably wont know the difference. I recently bought one of the philips 2150 soundbar $79 for DSE and honestly think the audio that comes from my tv is better. the best bang for buck is probably a decent set of computer speakers 2.1 from $100-200 thinking logitech, swan, audioengine, blah blah blah the only problem is adjusting the sound volume as i dont think many if any come with wireless remotes

  • i got a high end sound bar with a subwoofer and it rocks. rrp is about 700, but i got it from jbhifi for less than half that. its 7.1 as well (in virtual effect, ofcourse). choose a quality setup like that and avoid the $79 sound bars as us tv would as uve discovered have a better output…

  • Kogan sound bar (now sound base $149) - But he sells a Phillips sound bar.
Bought mine for $99 a few years back - now I can hear the actors speaking clearly, especially when they "whisper"
and the sub woofer adds heaps to the experience. It has a fm radio function also. Very happy.
