How to find mother's shares portfolio?

I need to fill in an Income Assessment form from Centrelink for my mother but I don't know how to find out what shares she owns. Could someone help with this please? I have her financial power of attorney.

I can log in to her Commsec account but she says that the portfolio shown there is not complete but is unable to name the missing shares. We have a folder of paper records/statements but it has not been maintained for 5+ years and I am not sure which shares have been sold or not. Centrelink asks for the latest statement for each share holding, how do I get them if it's been lost?

I have used the search lost/unclaimed money website but nothing turned up. She hasn't moved or changed names so it probably doesn't fit into that category.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

If you know her HIN(Holder Identification Number)'s or SRN(Securityholder Reference Number)'s (usually shown on statements from the companies) you should be able to see her shares via the various registry companies

    etc

  • Computershare and Link Market Services are the two biggest share registries for ASX listed shares. Contact them as I daresay they may be able to assist more if you speak with them directly.

Note: They are likely to be pedantic about proof of identification, so this may be a hurdle to overcome.

  • First thing I would do is check the bank statements for the last 12 months. This will at least show you the companies that are paying dividends (usually twice a year). If getting dividends by cheque, check the dividend statement.

From there use Costanza's advice. Once all sorted, get Commsec to transfer all shares to your mums Commsec account.

A Commsec listing should be good enough for Centrelink.

  • Centrelink has a 'Financial Information Service'. If C'link knows you have power of attorney for your mother (and you have some time to kill waiting on the phone) it might be worth ringing them with your question. You won't be the first person in this situation and, after all, they're the ones who want the information.

Thanks for all the good advice. I was able to get a list from computershare and link market services. Will follow up with other advice and double check receipt/record for any missing shares. Thank you.
