New Caledonia Holiday- Anyone Ever Been?

Went there as part of a cruise trip over 5 years ago. I remember it being more expensive than the neighbouring Vanuatu. The prices were quite dear so I hardly bought anything. From memory, a can of Coke from a store was about $1.50, so I passed on that. Ended up giving it to the kids who tried to sell me newspapers. The scenery was really nice, though. However, if you're on a budget, there are better places to visit with your hard-earned dollars.
There is a great sort of 'ethnic museum' in a beautiful building that's worth at least half a day. There's a public bus that does a loop there and back to the city.
Thanks for all the feedback guys..
Seems like its an OK place to. For me I've been to SEA for many times and looking for somewhere different to visit but cant afford travel too far at the momentBeen there three times (club med for honeymoon and 2 cruise stop overs). Ok place to visit but other places close by that offer much better value for money. Unless you are in a resort you may be bored within a few days.
Very expensive and Noumea is a hole. Not bad if you're on a cruise (how I saw it but definitely didn't entice me to go back) and its very expensive for what you get.
I think you can do Fiji on the cheap or if you want beaches go to Philippines/Koh Lipe Thailand/Perhentians Malaysia and go somewhere secluded.
some of the islands just off the coast of Anse Vata beach look the place to stay, rather than on the mainland.
Costs a bit more than Fiji & is very European. They drive on wrong side of road, but a change from Fiji, which have done a dozen or so times. Vanuatu is far more primitive.
Isle of Pines has fantastic white sand & extremely clear waters. Clearest have ever send, due to the clay in the sand I think.
I used to work in New Caledonia.
Things are expensive there.
When my wife came to visit, I brought her to Amedee Island ( http://www.amedeeisland.com/ ) Good day trip
And we also spent a few nights at Ile des Pins (Kuto Bay, Kanumera Bay, Piscine Naturelle)I think these were the highlights for her and what we remember best.
I haven't been there but I've been eyeing NC for a while. It's not a cheap destination, food and other stuff are imported, and being an overseas dependency of France, it has European prices. If you want cheap, go to SEA. Also the economy is not based on tourism but mining, so tourists are a bonus, not essential. It's said to be a different destination from your usual Pacific island resort with great landscapes. The main island is quite large and you really need a rental car and more than a week to appreciate it. More time and more money you could explore the other islands.
Head to tripadvisor.com and read some reviews of it.
