Big W / Everyday Rewards Bait Advertising

Big W are at it again with their typical bait advertising. I really don't know why I bother with them anymore.

After receiving an email with an offer on the Dyson DC44 for $349 ($100 off) for Everyday Rewards members from 2 - 8 October, I rang around trying to find one. After being told by several stores they don't stock that model I got onto one very helpful customer service person from a South Australian store who did a check for me on all stores only to discover none of them had one. He then took my details and said he would investigate further. He then rang me back shortly after saying that one store had 12 in stock but they were all "spoken for" or had been placed on hold previously.

This is not the first time something like this has happened to me with Big W. Don't believe their advertising or catalogues as they are likely to not have it.

Very disappointed again!

  • Can you get a rain check?

    • AFAIK Woolworths no longer offer rain checks. :-(
      Miserable b'tards all round.

They are red hot at bait advertising. Been caught many a time and not longer pay any attention to anything they offer.
The Woolworths 50% off specials are a con also. They have rapidly increased the price of many popular items to accommodate the 50% off offers.
We do our grocery shopping in this order now… aldi, coles, then what they don't have, woollies.

Of course no rainchecks! For a huge company with trillions of dollars they sure don't like to give any of it away!

    • Even worse when an employee :-( (from memory of many years ago)

If true this is clearly illegal. Reasonable quantities are required.
    Someone should alert the ACCC

    • Sucker bait advertising has been used by big co's for a very long time and even when hit with a fine they still continue. The fines are just not enough to make them fear the law.
It's also very hard to say that not enough stock was available. How much stock is the right amount for a sale?

It's also very hard to say that not enough stock was available. How much stock is the right amount for a sale?

Agree but if the OP is right then 1 for each 12 stores is fairly small. Maybe a "very limited amount available " rider would have been wise if they had limited stock.

However having also got the email, I noticed the following

        "(Price after promotion $449)"

So its not as if they were clearing it out.

Absolutely agree with you. A number of times on weekly specials I have been first in store, only to find either none or one or two only of the item on sale (that has been prominently advertised) in the catalogue. This is even for basics such as washing powder if they have a 50% off sale.

  • Take the ad and yoru EDRC to masters or GG and price match?

  • Try alerting Woolworths Ltd to this inexcusable behaviour, and let us know the results - though most of us can probably guess the canned answer you will get!!!

  • I got same/similar targeted email, 20% off canon cartridges (were already at about 15% off on shelf). After checkout, no discount, service desk can do nothing, told to contact Easyrewards people. Still waiting.

  • From the woolworths website… I recently got a raincheck on some Mainland cheese…

      Good info

But the OP was talking about Big W not the supermarket.

Big w advertising is a waste of money because of no stock normality - rarely set foot in one anymore because why bother? Gotta laugh at the new empty Big w online store - its just like the real stores - empty.

Agree that because Big W is owned by woolworths you should be able to get rainchecks on catalogue goods if no stock.

But getting rainchecks from woolworths is easier than Coles ,because their customer service is really abysmal. Even if you can be bothered to fight for one Coles restrict you further eg. to 1kg weights of advertised products because 2kgs is a commercial quantity!!!

Basically both Coles and Woolies treat customers abysmally, and both their so called customer service are a joke.
Australian retail is atrocious - and the biggest jokers are the senior managers who pay themselves fortunes for running a duopoly - I mean how hard is it without any real competition?
