This guy lost his cat and then designed the pet tracker. There are others out there but this is supposed to be smallest, lightest waterproof one. The deal is part of a Crowdfund that is doing really well. Saw the story on timeout here —nice: http://sydneyland.au.timeout.com/2014/10/01/sydney-mans-pet-…
Does anyone know if this is a good deal compared to others…it looks like a big discount off what they're going to sell it for.

Sounds like you don't have pets, or know many people who do. :)
Have you seriously never heard of a dog or cat going missing? Just how big is the rock you're living under?
Suggest you change the link to the page with details (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/pod-never-lose-your-pet-a…)
@Major Mess. Have you honestly not put any thought in before commenting? Never heard of a cat/dog getting hit by a car, maybe chased away by another animal or even stolen? What about getting spooked by fireworks?
Yep, I am well aware of rare dogs freaking at thunderstorms etc, but how does the dog get out of a fenced yard to get run over (As a kid in the 70's before fences were legislated we lost a German Short Haired Pointer to exactly that). Cats don't generally get freaked by noise, and if chased would run for cover.
Anyway, that is beside the point. If you cat/dog gets out and is run over by a car all the tracker will tell you is where to find the animal after the fact. That's if the device survives the impact. The aim of the tracker is to find lost animals not stop them getting run over etc.
ok… so a product that doesn't yet exist and has never been sold before can somehow be a bargain because a fictitious early buyer price is less than a fictitious RRP
feel free to hope you get something eventually - those who want something similar direct from the RSPCA, then buy a https://www.worldforpets.com.au/products/148772207 for $199 AUD
What you recommended is $50 dearer so doesn't help your argument
the POD is $172 AUD at current forex rates…. which could end up being $172 for nothing
I don't have much faith in the two main guys behind this after their wyngle fizzle
EDIT: I wish the company behind POD the best of luck and hope the venture succeeds
The RSPCA Trakapet you linked to is AUD$199 and costs $14.99 a month. The unit is also quite bulky and, IMHO, it looks like little thought was put into the design.
The Pod is US$149 and costs US$30 a year for the sim, including data and SMS costs. It runs off Vodafone's network. They say they have a global telco deal so it will work in many countries around the world. I think the design looks much better too.
Of course it's a crowdfunded campaign, so … no idea if it'll actually get delivered or perform as expected.
One thing to note, it's a GSM device. The GSM network will be shut down in … the near future, depending on whether or not they'll delay it. They did say they're developing a 3G model and buyers of the GSM model will get a generous discount.
Their FAQ mentions "… we use GPS and GSM mobile technology instead of Bluetooth", it seems your pets carry a tracker like a mobile phone that transmits the GPS location periodically. I know the mobile phone radiation safety standard for human being (e.g. Specific Absorption Rate or SAR). However I am not sure any radiation safety standard for pets exists and mobile phones are safe for pets.

looks fine to me

this is one of the dumbest posts i've seen.
you've posted a bargain about NOTHING.
Where do I get one for my kids from?
This is like a Kickstarter project. It's just seeking funds at the moment and they haven't even released the product.
It's worse than a Kickstarter project, because it is 'flexible funding' - i.e. even if the goal isn't reached, they walk off with the cash.
It seems like ever since Kickstarter added the following to their rules: "When a project involves manufacturing and distributing something complex, like a gadget, we require projects to show a prototype of what they’re making, and we prohibit photorealistic renderings." gadget projects have been fleeing to Indiegogo (because they can't get it together to develop a prototype).(Downvoted because a bet is not a 'deal', IMHO, and giving to an Indiegogo campaign is betting, not buying).
Where is the info and specs on the product? Is there a deal with one of the mobile phone companies for the constant data stream for position?
Thinking about it, I don't know who would use one. The only free roaming dogs in Australia are on rural properties, and they don't wander off, so to speak(there is also reception issues in the bush. Cats usually hang somewhere near home, and a properly trained cat shouldn't ever want to leave their home property. Maybe for the odd escaped Budgie, but can they still fly with the thing attached?
