Refurbished Ipex PC with 3.2GHz, 1G RAM, 80GB HDD for $169 [CatchOfTheDay]

190

Intel Celeron 3.2 GHz with an 80GB HDD, 1GB RAM, Gigabit Ethernet, DVD burner, and Windows XP Professional preloaded, for $169. Looks like this could be a good budget PC, if you're looking for one.

My first post here :)

  • Not great, but not bad. The cheapish shipping ($15 everywhere) makes it better.

  • Does anyone know if you can stick in a LGA775 Pentium D into one of these?

    • It seems likely but too hard to tell without knowing the model of the PC.

Judging from the photos it has 2 PCI expansion slots, SATA HDD and only 2 banks for RAM (probably occupied by 2x512). Also looks like graphics expansion slot, pretty sure it's AGP and not PCI-E.

  • i dont really think this is a fantastic deal. refurbished, no name brand.. even as a torrent box i'd prefer to build my own.

Since when did desktops have a brand? Are you referring to dell or sony? You must enjoy being ripped off.

      • i have never heard of ipex… ok i might not be an it guru, but i know 'most' of the common brands out there. By brand name, i just mean a case brand… coolermaster, antec, lian-li etc etc. or a brand, dell, hp, etc etc.

    • IPEX are a fairly well known company and for $169 I think it's pretty reasonable.

The alternative would be to buy + build an Atom based machine but you'd still exceed $169 (anyone care to do a price list?) and the performance would be drastically slower too..

Not to mention this comes with XP Pro license! These machines are mostly used in corporate environments so they don't take that much of a beating, they just get dusty.. refurb'd so it means all parts are working and for $169 it's a bargain.

Great for folks who need a spare PC or parents have one which is on its way out..

      • Ipex are a fairly well known failed company. And they're a whitebox company, which counts as a no-name brand one.

There's no point comparing it to any type of new system, since it's over 4 years old. You compare it to other old second hand systems.

And through this comparison it's decent. Normally this'd be more like $200-$250ish, and like I said earlier, the shipping is quite good.

Failed or not, they're still not a generic mob slapping together parts in a beige box, they were 'reasonable' for their time.

I would prefer an Acer or Dell but with cheap shipping as you've pointed out, it's a fair compromise.

@cyssero: I'd consider them a generic mob slapping together parts in a beige box. I'm not sure how you could have considered them anything else.

If I recall they outsourced their warranties to UEE, just like any computer store can. They really were nothing more than a generic slapping together factory.

@[Deactivated]: Hmm. I wouldn't call a company with 2% of the Australian PC market generic, but maybe that's just me. Sure they went the way of the dodo, but so did Gateway, Optima and countless others - all of which had deals with big corporate clients.

To me, generic is your local computer store banging together something for you. Ipex weren't quite the same.

@cyssero: Maybe not in scale, but in terms of components and warranty they were no different.

    • We had these at work, they where pretty average and failed quite regularly. Ours where P4's rather than the Celerons I would avoid any 2nd hand PC's especially Celeron's. What is involved in a PC refurbishment anyway? A good clean and a rebuild??

      • They take it apart, spray all the components with air, then rebuild it (possibly in a new case)

      • For what it's worth, I have a pretty old Ipex machine - A Pentium 3 866MHz. Got it second-hand many years ago. It's still working pretty well, I'm using it as a Linux server / torrent machine :)

        • My P MMX 166 still work very well, with 3.2GB HD, 128M RAM, no brand. cost $1600 when new… but can not find any software work on it, for memory only…:)

  • XP Pro (OEM) is $179 at MSY and you have to buy it with a hdd I think, and you could transfer the licence from this comp to some other desktop without too much trouble so the hardware is free hehe

Unlikely, the license associated with the IPEX would be an OEM one too and that stipulates you cannot transfer the licenses between machines like you suggest. You need a retail license to do that.

Ah average-ish deal - these refurbed systems are a dime a dozen on Ebay and that price is about what you'd expect to pay or thereabouts.

If you're after a cheap system then sure refurbs are good idea - but these isn't an overly great refurb deal IMHO.

That said, You definitely couldn't build a machine with the same performance for that money - especially with the XP licence included…..hence why these ex-corporate machines are pretty good value for folks who want a basic machine.

I'd be 99.9% certain you could put a number of different CPUs in there - definitely a P4 D. Prolly is pretty loud though as a system but you could play around with it if you wanted and upgrade things etc.

    Is okay-ish. :-)

Giving a positive as its your first deal uploaded and also I guess for average people who don't live and breath PC's this is a reasonably nice buy….so fair play and good spot.

    :-)

  • The CPU is very weak, for this price, easy to get a P4 slim PC from EBAY, even cheaper.

    • What do I search on eBay????

  • I bought a IPEX case a year ago. Inside was a quality SevenTeam power supply.

    • Heh, my P3 Ipex case had a "LITE-ON" power supply in it… I thought they only made CD burners and such O_o

  • I think it's a fair deal for someone who wants a complete no fuss no nonsense machine for simple tasks. With an XP key in there and decent shipping it seems okay.

  • I brought a good budget PC for $60 with windows xp pro(keyword:hp d530). THis one $169 is a fair price
