I went diving and snorkelling with a friend a few days ago and I accidentally lost her GoPro. She said she could probably use more PhD funding to get another one but I feel bad and want to get her a new one. Unfortunately, I don't really know anything about GoPros and after a bit of googling am unsure of what to get. Should I get her a replacement entry level Hero 3, or wait for the Hero 4 to come out and get the entry level one? What ways are there to reduce the cost?

You could wait for the GoPro4 to come out, which I think is close in Australia, and then replace her exact same model (refurbished/used as well) at a cheaper price.
I've got the sony action camera for $100 a few months ago.
Wouldn't you just get the exact same one you lost?
After a bit of investigating I found out the GoPro I lost was a hero 3 white. She won't let me buy her another one nor pay for it so I guess it's a little win for my wallet, but I'll definitely get her a gift of some sort. Thanks for your input guys.

But if I were you, I would definitely get her another GoPro regardless of what she says.
Of course if you offer to her that you'll get another one for her, she's going to reject it.
Also.. even if you do get her some other gift, she'll still want her GoPro.
It's a big loss for her, so I would definitely pay for what's costed her.
Put it this way.
If you lent your GoPro to a friend and they lost it, wouldn't you want them to replace that for you?
Or would you rather them get you some other gift?
