I will keep away from Seagate drives for while.

    • What is wrong with Seagate? I've heard that Seagate hard disks were known for reliability and were backed up by 5-year warranty. (However, warranty after 3rd year is a faction of the purchasing price).

There were a batch of their 7200.11 drives that had a firmware bug, which unchecked leads to a controller chip failure! Seagate has issued a firmware patch which nips it in the bud, but if it's not applied before failure the drive will just fail to detect on power up one day!

I just RMA'd one myself, since it's a controller failure, not mechanical drive failure the data's fine, so Seagate are supposed to back up your data for nix, I asked, but they didn't do mine, I'm not happy about that! :(

Although the RMA turnaround to Singapore was 7 days exactly, so I can't complain too much, I'm just miffed coz I lost my Wolfenstein2 savegames, now I've gotta kill those Nazis all over again! :(

Seagate has copped a well deserved pizzling over this, they knew about the issue but didn't come forward until they were forced to under weight of evidence and pressure from disgruntled users! I wouldn't be surprised to see quite a few more retailers trying to offload Seagate drives that won't be moving under their own steam for this reason at substantially reduced prices in the near future! ;)

        • +1

Quite disappointing to hear that they didn't back up your data like promised. I guess you should always make your own backups and all but I clearly recall them saying they will restore data free of charge.

I think the worst thing was even when they issued the firmware fix, the fix had a bug in it, and it was taken down before a final fix was made. Very poor effort but I have forgiven them due to my past successes with them, hopefully they won't screw up again.

          • @cyssero: Yeah, I was only really dirty about the Wolf games coz I know it's my own stupid fault for being impatient & lazy and just letting the game install to this default (system) drive anyway just to play it ASAP! Everything really important was never stored on this drive, and always backed up thrice for safety - I even had an image of the original Win7 install so the rebuild was a POP, but it's long before Wolf2 sadly!

I don't really hold a grudge against Seagate per se for the bugs, but I kinda held off on this deal, even though it's a really great price, coz I think I'm gonna give WD a try again, my buddies using them have no complaints! ;)

But the silver lining here is, I do know where all the gold, tomes and intel are hidden in those Wolf levels, so those Nazis ain't gonna know what hit 'em when I get some free time! ;)

            • @StewBalls: Haha, you will probably fly through it next time around. Been meaning to give it a go..

Personally I have a mixture of WD, Seagate, Samsung drives at home ranging from 200MB to 1TB and all are working fine. The 200MB WD works well but a microSD flash card the size of my pinky nail can hold 32GB so its usefulness is next to none.

Sure I've seen a fair share of drives crash through work, but they fail consistently regardless of brand, and are usually quite old or mistreated.

              • @cyssero: Yeah, the only HDDs with "bad" failure rates that I ever saw were Maxtor 40GB IDE drives in Dell GX260s (and they were truly shocking - dropping like flies from day 1 & right through a 3yr PC life-cycle),, so that's going back a good few years.
Other than them, I'd be going back even further to the IBM DeathStar days…

@TeaEarlGreyHot: LOL, I'd forgotten the DeathStars, that takes me back! ;)

Don't forget an honourable mention to the Quantum Bigfoot, really nasty drives not just in form factor, but also noise, reliability and performance terms! Oddly enough, great source of fridge magnets though! :p

        • Since these are the 7200.12, do they still have the bug?

  • Love the price but I'm not sure if I want to get another Seagate either.

  • Isn't this the two platter model? With 1TB of data on this, I hope you have another drive for a backup - at least it has a 3 yr warranty! Shame about the 1 limit - would have been perfect for RAID.

    • +1

It is the 2 platter model which means it should be exceptionally quick. Review here compares it to the 7200.11 and had this to say:

The Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS achieved a write speed of 78.49 megabytes per second and a read speed of 83.77MBps. When copying the data folder from one location on the drive to another, it delivered a speed of 32.75MBps.

By comparison, the previous generation of this drive, the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, provided a read speed of 69.12MBps, a write speed of 72.02MBps and a folder-to-folder copy speed of 20.85MBps.

In fact, the high-performance Western Digital VelociRaptor (WD3000GLFS) hard drive, which is renowned for its speed, returned a read speed of 92.8MBps — only approximately 10MBps faster than the Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS. So you can see the Barracuda 7200.12 is very quick.

Yeah purchase limits are stupid, who cares if one person wants 2, a sale is a sale.

    • +4

These sort of specials are usually at or below cost price, in this case I'd guess below. It's used as a means of advertising, getting your name out to as many people as possible, put you on their radar of places to buy from when you want something more than just a HDD.

If you're losing money on each drive, you really want to limit the amount each person can buy, otherwise you'd go broke.

$5 cheaper than MSY after shipping, pretty good.

Awesome deal! Been waiting for 1TB to hit the magical $100 delivered price. Must buy one, especially a fast one like this.

Seagate has implemented a containment action to ensure that all manufacturing >test processes write the same "benign" fill pattern. This change is a >permanent part of the test process. All drives with a date of
manufacture January 12, 2009 and later are not affected by this issue as they >have been through the corrected test process.

9289 website doest not state the manufacture date of those drives.
I have sent email to ask them to put that information in their website.

In the mean time, if you are too lazy or do not know how to do firmware update, please at least take some time to check the manufacture date.
Make sure the manufacture date is January 12, 2009 or later.

    • +1

If they don't get back to you, when I get my drive I'll let ya know.

    • Hi, any updates on the manufacture date?

      • Haven't received drive yet but will find out soon. Come to think of it, Seagate drives (the more recent ones) don't clearly stipulate the date, is there a way to figure out when it was made using one of the various numbers/codes on it?

  • +2

The drive has been out of stock from Ingram for sometime and just back in stock. So hopefully they are the latest batch.

  • Went there today but they have no stock will have to wait until tomorrow.

  • +2

Picked up one today. Date Code of 10031 which from here http://www.westernnetworks.com/tools/seagatedatecode.php corresponds to a Build Date: Saturday, July 18, 2009. It's a Barracuda 7200.12 model. Good deal and a nice looking shop as well!

Hiya L45er could you check what version firmware your drive is should be either CC34, CC35 or CC44.
And if you wouldn't mind do a warranty check(see link below)on Seagate's web site? As you have to include your country when doing a warranty check I just want to make sure it's valid in Australia and not a parallel import drive that is warranted in another country.

      http://support.seagate.com/customer/warranty_validation.jsp
only need serial, model and country to check.

I'm looking to grab one on Friday and yes I am paranoid ;) specially for the price.

      • I have done a check but cannot remember the version of the firmware.

Warranty no problem, expiry date Aug 2012 something. Because it is very new it even ask me to go to Ingram to claim and get a replacement.

        • Mine is:

          In Warranty
          Expiration 25-Jul-2012

          Australian, of course.

  • The deals been taken down?

    • It ended today.

      • Should be end tomorrow but I think they have all out of stock.

        • I thought I read on the website it closed on the 10/09, could easily have been 11/09 instead, oh well - should be some more good deals on 1TB drives soon!
