Cost Effective Purchases on Steam?

Hi, I'm looking for advice on purchasing from Steam in preparation for the Summer sale.

What's the best cost effective approach for making purchases on Steam?

A while ago I was able to purchase from EB a $50 USD Steam voucher for $50 AUD but I don't think they do this anymore.

After the converstion rates..etc Am I better off paying for each title through CC, Paypal, adding Steam wallet funds or buying vouchers locally?

Any tips or tricks? I should know? Like using VPN to pay their foreign curreny (eg Mexico)

  • I usually buy games off Amazon/GMG/Nuuvem which don't have region restrictions. Cheaper than our AU prices, Steam keys, authorized re-sellers.

  • +3

Only buy items in a flash sale, they are time limited and only last half a day or so but that's why the discounts are the deepest during a summer sale. If you are not sure whether you will play the game buy it as a gift to yourself and it will be stored as an inventory item which can be opened or traded.

Use online price comparison sites to find the best deals, install the Steam enhancement suite on Firefox.

You cannot use tricks to bypass region pricing, Valve will give you a slap on the wrist if you use VPN. Instead, go to Reddit and make some American or Russian steam friends

  • Foreign traders are willing to exchange games for valve keys. Usually comes out cheaper or equal price to sale prices. If you are willing to risk it you can also buy keys from a third party at a reduced cost, but you might get scammed.

  • I find putting games you want in your Steam wishlist, and you should get an email saying "A game in your wishlist is on sale!" as they may discount some of those games randomly..

A 28 degrees credit card will give you a good rate for USD , so just watch the daily rate and hope it doesn't slide down to 75cents as they're predicting.. Can preload at any time..

  • Old thread but the sale hasn't come yet (assuming you meant Winter sale as it's northern hemisphere). I use www.isthereanydeal.com to import my Steam wishlist. Unlike Steam Wishlist notifications, this site is (a) reliable (b) able to set price/percentage thresholds (per game) on when to mail you (c) monitors several other sites that sell Steam keys.

I also sometimes look at www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals. It's a good place to check for GreenManGaming.com coupon codes for example.

But for really super bargains, I monitor www.reddit.com/r/Gamebundles (with my RSS reader).

As for the Steam Summer/Winter sales specifically, the best strategy is to wait until the last day of the sale, in case of better prices. For example, a title may be 50% off for the duration of the sale, but in the interim, it may be in a "daily" or "flash" sale for 75% off or more.

Finally, www.enhancedsteam.com provides a browser extension that adds elements to Steam store webpages. It can show you the price history of a title across several sites, and can show you if it's cheaper on another site, among many other things.
