Greece July 2015

Hi everyone,

Just hoping someone can give me a few pointers about our suggested itinerary. It will be our honeymoon. We are looking to fly on the 29/6/15 and have to be back by the 11/7/14. So just under 2 weeks.

At this stage we will leave from Brisbane but return to Melbourne. Flights look ok with the early bird specials (under $2000 return each).

We aim to arrive in Athens and catch a flight straight to Mykonos. Looking to stay in Mykonos town for 3 nightsand explore the history and sites, plus some nightlife. Any accommodation or areas to stay in suggestions?

We then want to catch the hydrofoil to Santo ring and spend 4 nights. We are looking to spend a bit more and have an amazing hotel with the postcard caldera view and awesome pool. Not sure if I want to spend over $400/night though.

Lastly will be a flight back to Athens for 3 nights exploring all of the history there. Best place to stay, maybe 3-4 star?

Who is best to fly with?
Singapore - (Brisbane - Singapore - Istanbul - Athens)

Malaysia - Qatar - Athens

  • Check out the site "airbnb" I stayed with them everywhere last year in Europe. Just check the reveiws!

  • Check out Hotel Tagoo, small 20 bedroom 2/3 star hotel ten minute walk from Hora. They will pick up and drop off at airport or port. Friendly hotel rated Number 1 on tripadvisor and has been for years….Athens these days since the GFC has gone down hill unfortunately, but hotels in Plaka is a good spot, lots of markets, shops and close to Monistraki metro station which connects to the airport.

  • For Athens, have a look at The Acropolis House Hotel. It's a real old-style, homely hotel (think 1960's) and I'm not sure if it's two or three star. But the staff are very helpful, it's clean and in an unbeatable location - Very close to the restaurant area on Kidathineon Street, and within walking distance to the Acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki, Adrianou Street, etc.

For accommodation in general look at Airbnb as mentioned, but also www.booking.com, www.bedandbreakfastworld.com and the establishment's own web site. The prices for the same place can vary depending on which web site you book through.

  • For flights, check www.skyscanner.com.au and www.adioso.com.

  • Thanks everyone. I've done a bunch of research on skyscanner and have price alerts set up. I actually went in and sat down with flight Centre to get some tips and connection times, as well as hydrofoil and domestic flight options. Looking at flying all the way with Singapore and their code shares for under $2000 each.

They didn't have any decent accommodation suggestions though, so that's where I'm up to.

Decent Mykonos for 3 nights will be around $700, very nice Santorini with all the views and 5 star will be around $1400 for 4 nights, attend we will do a bit cheaper, around $200/night. All up looking to be around $8000 for both of us.

  • After talking to a few people, we might skip Mykonos. Mainly because it's peak summer, our honeymoon and we aren't interested in partying or being surrounded by it.

Does anyone have suggestions for 1 more island? Looking at Rhodes, Crete or Paros.

  • What kind of honeymoon are you looking for? An upmarket resort with poolside waiters? A quiet, secluded self-catering apartment close to a beautiful beach? Somewhere with interesting archaeology to explore? A beach filled with Germans on rows of sunbeds? Ancient laneways lined with romantic restaurants.

Heraclion doesn't have any of the above but you can find better places elsewhere on Crete, or on Rhodes or Paros.

  • Hi, we want to fly into Santorini and have the typical caldera view and nice hotel. Thinking like $300 per night.

Then hopping over to Paros or Naxos for 3 nights to enjoy the beaches, cafes, laneways and sights. Hoping for under $200 a night, a nice room with some sort of balcony view.

Finishing up in Athens to do all the wonderful history. Room still needs to be nice, but we'll be out most of the day.

Would like each place to have a pool during peak summer.

Not too keen on partying, hence staying away from Mykonos and Ios.

  • A friend stayed in Santorini recently on a romantic holiday and liked this place:
Andromeda villas with 2 guests swimming pools + private external spa.

If you are looking at Rhodes, consider one of the hotels on the middle east coast which has a large selection but also nice beaches. The north coast is very built up.
