Just be aware that when you buy online from the GGs and choose instore pickup, not only do they ask you for your Drivers License as proof of ID (Fair enough), but they also demand to record the Drivers License number and your DOB, along with your name and address, in a book they keep behind the counter (Northland, VIC).
Personally I believe this is going to far from a privacy point of view and refused. In my case I had to get a refund because even though I showed them my proof of ID and my copy of the email etc, they still refused unless I let them record my Licence number and DOB in their book. Which by the way they kep behind one of their reception desks, free for any employ to peruse and use.
imagine all the things they could do with that information!
based on what you've said, that looks like a clear breach of the new privacy principles.
Unless they have a valid reason for needing your DOB they can not even ask for it, let alone store it. And if they do have it, then they need to keep it securely.

full disclosure, I'm currently pissed off by TGG selling me stock that they don't have as part of their ebay promo.
Well I had an argument with the manager at Northland in VIC, he was quite rude and refused to listen to my reasoning on why I didn't want him to record my LIC # / DOB. I then had a discussion with their customer service on Twitter and again all they did was quote me there T&Cs, when i pointed out that I thought what they were doing was illegal, they ignored me. Finally called their customer service phone line and left my number for them to ask the owner of the store to call me, still waiting….
All in all left a bad taste in my mouth dealing with TGG. Too many choices out there to put up with this BS, in my opiniongo here: http://www.oaic.gov.au/privacy/making-a-privacy-complaint
easy to make a complaint.
They'd have turnover of >$3mill and would be subject to the OAIC
Well done on taking a stand. Most people wouldn't bother, so they continue their potentially-illegal practices while hiding behind T&Cs.
If you don't get anywhere with TGG, maybe you can take it to the OAIC:

be sure to document all the steps you've taken to resolve the issue:
- Speaking to the manager
- Customer service online
- Customer service via phonethe first step with most of these bodies (have only had one experience with the OAIC) is to push the complaint back to the company. So mention that there is an impact on a lot of people, I'd love to see TGG investigated. I know I had to give them all my details before the new privacy principles came into force.

Thanks everyone. I will be lodging a complaint. i have copies of all the correspondence. The OAIC site says I have to wait 30 days. I doubt I'll get any further response from them. i'll see how i go. Thanks again for the link.
