Ended up getting a solar hot water system supplied by the QLD state government for $800 (that is still going today). If you have a mostly unshaded roof it makes sense, no heat pump noise, less moving parts (only a small pump to move the hot water from the roof to the tank).
Guessing you are looking now there are rebates in Sep?
Ya I don't need it but just comparing gas vs heat pump vs solar water since my solar pays for all electricity

Yeah it was cheap even then, although there are lots of complaints about the company (Conergy) that has since left Australia.
