Am in Victoria and looking to buy a car interstate. Is there anyone who experienced this?

Hi my fellow OZb's

Am in Victoria and looking to purchase a car from Queensland.

My current options are:

  1. Do the ownership transfer there (including the registration and stamp duty) driver it all the way here and do then do the registration/ plates transfer.
(I suppose this option will buy me as much time as i wish to drive the car around here and all i have to do is register the car here without having to go through a Vicroads inspection, roadworthy, etc,,,)

  2. De-register the car there, get a temporary permit to drive it here and then take care of the stamp duty, registration, etc,,,,

Ps, i do realize that i could get the car here through a car carrier. but i feel like a long drive.

I would love to hear from someone who's knowledgeable in the matter or had some experience doing so.

Cheers

I went with option 1 when I purchased my car from Brisbane and drove it back to Melbourne.
Took it to vicroads and registered it here and returned the QLD plates.
Pretty easy process, I would do it again if I found a good car up there again.

  • You lose a lot of the registration cost if you cancel a registration, because you don't get back the ctp.

      @Geewhizz
I have got the CTP back on two NSW rego cars that i transferred up to QLD.

(handed in the NSW plates to Qld transport when i changed to qld rego.)

(cheque came back from the CTP insurers direct, was a bit of stuffing around but not difficult)

  • @unco - Thanks for that mate, that's very encouraging to know. nice drive yes? you took the coastal?

And guy, the CTP costs, are they quite considerable? are we talking $50 or a few hundreds?

  • I've done option 2 before, found it very easy.
The dealer called and got a permit over the phone, drove it home then went to the RTA and got everything sorted that week.

Wonder if you would have many hassles driving all the way from QLD to VIC with no plates.

  • The only two cars I have ever bought have been from interstate. One from auctions and one privately. Both were transported to VIC.

Both cases the car was sold (and arrived) with a little bit of reg left over.

In both cases it took me a few weeks to get the cars ready for registration, and the reg expired, and so had to get a unreg vehicle permit. Took the cars into VICROADS and they were both registered as 'new registrations'

I believe that even if the reg has not yet expired, you can do the same thing, but there was a slight difference in the process, so perhaps give VICROADS a ring and ask them.

But if the seller is willing to give you the car with reg, then take it. Then just take it to VICROADS when you are ready to register it.

Only issue is, not sure if the previous owner will get their refund on the remaining reg. I suspect they will just have to go cancel it officially after you have registered the vehicle in VIC.
