Ship guitars to Australia - or take a USA flight to pickup!?

I'm trying to work out if it's cheaper to ship 3x guitars from the USA, or, to fly there and bring them back with me.

The guitars can be shipped anywhere in the USA for free. I'm about to email the store and ask what shipping would be.

But I'd be flying over, grabbing the pre-delivered guitars (not sure where to yet - would an airport hold them for me!?) - then hop straight onto another flight back to Australia with the guitars.

So I guess I need to know… where can I find the most dirt-cheap return Australia/USA flight? Don't even care when - just the cheapest!

  • Probably cheaper to ship, but way less adventure! If you insist on picking them up and they ship anywhere in the US, you could ask them to ship to a post office in Hawaii. I'm not sure about USA, but in AUS you can send a parcel "care of" a post office without a PO Box and they'll receive and hold it for you for about a week.
Jetstar and Qantas have ~$1000 return fares from Bris or Syd advertised lately. It might be hard to get the dates you want and at the very least you should probably overnight there to give yourself enough time to go and get the guitars before going back and in case of flight delays. There will be high excess baggage fees as well, particularly for Jetstar.

  • If the guitars are worth more than $1000, you might have to pay tax when you get back. Insured shipping shouldnt cost 1K? hmmm

  • I'm intrigued hombre. Where'd you get these axes, and what are you gonna do with them? What type/s are they? Are they old? Electrics or acoustics? Any nice, high quality nylon stringed guitars?

  • Glider & YouLIKE… The guy reckons $300 USD to ship each guitar here. So a total $900 USD. I wonder what it would cost in baggage fees, if I took literally no other baggage with me. Although a guitar wouldn't fit into their take-on-the-plane size, so I may as well take some clothes I guess??

The problem is he won't ship here, because there's an Australian supplier. Which not only has neither of these guitars, but hardly any others either. So I'd have to have them shipped to friends for free in the USA - then they re-ship to me.

    Gnarly…

  • Oh - and the guy also ships to Canada, if it's any cheaper to fly there!?

  • Use a re- shipper. Email a few and get some quotes. Be aware that Canada will collect Gst if you go that way, and their postage is expensive. I have used ship it.to and others have posted deals here.

    • Thanks… Don't know anyone in Canada, so I'd have to fly and pickup myself in that case. A re-shipper? Thanks, I'll have to look that up.

  • Try Price USA.
