There's been cheaper return fares in the past but not bad for a full service airline and if you're not looking to come back.

As steptoe noted below you can get a cheap jetstar flight back to Sydney in November. I found one for $409. So total return is $908 with one leg Qantas.

Just saw tightarses post and if you don't mind flying Jetstar looks like it's a fair bit cheaper to use them both ways. Don't know how I missed those prices.

    Jetstars Friday fare frenzy has Sydney to Honolulu from $439 one way if you really wanna save the pennies, but I think the extra $60 is worth the extra comfort etc :

      QF includes baggage and meals so is actually probably cheaper providing you're flying from Syd or Bris

    Skyscanner in November suggests Jetstar for $700 return from Sydney - no bags or food, but might be a good cheap option.
