Picked up a 8 pack of AAA Toshibas for 50c yesterday at Reject Shop Nerang (last one). Price tags on the shelf had other sizes and packs also at 50c. It was not marked as a clearance item. Other stores may have stock. Good luck.

Two problems with this:
1) They aren't alkaline batteries.
2) You can't recharge alkaline batteries, you can only build a small temporary charge which is often referred to as polarization. What battery are they then?
Can charge alks. My Internets told me so damnit. Well…with a special 'smart' charger. Slowly.
Looks like pack says "heavy duty" which means zinc batteries. Good deal for extremely low drain devices, like boring old TV remotes. But alkalines can provide 4 times the capacity in more moderate drain devices, and 40 times under high drain:

Let's be charitable and say you only need four to match an alkaline, so $0.25. Compare to 24-pack Varta alkaline from Bunnings, which is $0.40 a cell. Still much cheaper, but not a good a deal as it first appears given the inconvenience of more frequent battery changes, and virtual uselessness in higher-drain devices (they'd be awful "emergency" batteries compared to alkalines).

$24.95 not JayCars $50.
As long as a non-rechargable isn't dead you can use a smart charger and recharge 10-20 times. At least that's what my Internets told me, or the person selling the charger.
I'd have a Doctor Zapper or whatever it was called before and it works, but the Doc Zapper biz collapsed and so did my charger and they wanted $70 to look at it but it's only worth around that much.
For you typical Ozbargainer, rechargeables are the way to go. IF you have dozend of kids toys requiring batteries, 6.25c is a bargain.
Nice. Biggest battery bargain ever, just hard to get. Will check nearest Reject Shop in Brisbane. 6.25cents per AAA and use for slow draining stuff like wall clocks and simple remotes then recharge with this $49 alkaline smart charger http://www.envioustechnology.com.au/products/product-detail.…
